New Orleans Saints salary cap squeeze
1 Attachment(s)
The NFL advised general managers this week that it was projecting a salary cap in the neighborhood of $150 million for the 2016 season.
For the New Orleans Saints and other teams facing a cap squeeze, the news served as a reminder of the work that must be done to trim the payroll in the coming months. The Saints have about $154 million allotted to 41 players under contract for 2016. They'll have to release players, negotiate pay cuts and restructure contracts in order to get under the cap and create space to pursue free agents and sign a draft class. The Saints will make the numbers work, as they do every offseason. But they may have to make more sacrifices than usual this year. http://image.nola.com/home/nola-medi...217-mmmain.jpg Read much more here, including a breakdown of all the players |

Loomis has really screwed us on this one.

Re: New Orleans Saints salary cap squeeze
Wow, this again?
This is probably the best situation we've been in 5 years. Year after year Loomis re-works contracts to get us under the cap and affords us the capability to sign numerous key free agents. Yet year after year people panic. Loomis has this under control. If you doubt it you simply aren't paying attention, or you're dumber than a box of Cam Newtons. |
Re: New Orleans Saints salary cap squeeze
Never re-sign defensive players to sweet deals. Loomis made that mistake a couple of times. We got burned bad. It almost never works out. Once they get paid it's over.

Re: New Orleans Saints salary cap squeeze
Colston is gone. Drew will fix that mess of a contract by extending it a year. 2 years 40 million total. Those 2 would save us about 13 million right there. Jordan will convert his to a signing bonus like they stated saving 4.8 million. That would cover the cap hit when the cut Browner. No way the cut of trade Morstead unless it is a must. He is without a doubt the best punter in the league but is a punter really worth 4.5 million?

Repeat after me 2017 2017 2017 2017
huge off season. 30 million to Drew and SP is rumored out the door. I think we have the two biggest eggs inour basket right there. There is no room left till we deal with these two. Drew does not redo that contract ... i will be at the end of my rope with him. |

Re: New Orleans Saints salary cap squeeze
Expressing concern over the salary cap is hardly panic; what I'd ask...
Have you seen the decline in this team these past five years? Do you think there is no correlation whatsoever?!? I'd like to see Drew return the faith he was shown when first signed with a questionable shoulder and a mid-tier quarterback BEFORE Payton's system... C'mon Drew, be a winner like Brady and be a team player... |

Re: New Orleans Saints salary cap squeeze
some point in time drew with Katie bar the door, enough dealing, extending, bonus bonuses. he will say cut this and go sign for 1 more 100 million plus in his last who-ra. like they the mannings , farves, stablers, all wanted. drew brees is as in shape as most rookies, he knows he can play as long as he can work out. its up to us if we will keep trying to put together a pathwork line with wanta bes and use to bes. we need to cut some age old asses like vitt that have no new ideas , payton that never will give up the play calling has to re idea his thinking, because it aint working unless its a pass or 2, we get nobody open because we run the same rtes from 2006 just different names, we go against worst wide out and tight ends and we don't cover because its not payton calling the plays in the game like in practice.

Yeah, I think we finally have had a good draft... But the FA signings have really sucked balls... And this year to year, kick the can, band-aid fix for the salary cap has got to be addressed... |

Re: New Orleans Saints salary cap squeeze
Its not the cap situation that has us in trouble. Its scouting and decisions on personnel. Loomis finds the money, every year and he can keep kicking it down the road and working magic. The problem is what the coaching staff spends that money on. Like I said earlier. He always gets us below the cap with enough left over. Its not his fault it isnt spent right. He will restructure Drew, work some magic and get us under the cap again. We will find a big free agent or two and hope to god there are different people on staff who know how to get the right personnel . The cap doesnt worry me one bit.
Byrd, Unger, Browner, Ellerbie were supposed to be upgrades and we got them signed. |

I know its all ifs and buts now, but the plan was fairly solid going into 2015. Still had a few holes but no more than most teams. |
