2007, 2008
This is what was missed opportunities that could have built up our resume as contenders in that time. We missed the playoffs that many blame on a 0-4 start but hold that thought. We missed the playoffs by screwing up the superdome special and by losing a low scoring game to a Delhommeless panthers we lost the division. We had the better SOV than the bucs beating the seahawks, jaguars, and bears to their rams, titans, and redskins. The redskins and bears were separated by 2 games as it was.
Had we won that division we beat the bucs in the wild card round-who would have gotten in over the redskins. Then we have a tough challenge in snowy Lambeau. In 2008 we choked a game against the redskins, missed field goals against the broncos and vikings, threw a pick against the bucs in the second game, committed a penalty in ot against the bears after being down due to 25, and played like the Carolina game was not important. Had we been alive I doubt we let u that bad on defense. We had what it took to be the 2 seed that year if we capitalized on four situations. Had we been in. We just had to beat Arizona and eagles in our dome. Had we gone 10-6 we would have gotten the last wild card, gotten revenge on Minnesota, then getting a Burress-less giants before going to Arizona. The NFC South curse screwed us in 07 but no excuses to not finish second instead of the dreaded a third place curse. It would have landed us a first round exit in Seattle due to the west coast playoff trend but still. In 08 we could have won the division twice in three years and making the postseason period we could have gotten to the sb to play pittsburgh. |
Re: 2007, 2008
In 2008 we had Josh Bullocks and Kevin Kaesviharn starting at safety for us, it was terrible.
We also had roughly 15 players on IR, I can remember them dropping like flies. I think our real missed opportunities were 2010 and 2011, we had the Superbowl team right there ready. In 2010 we lost to the only team ever to make the playoffs with a losing record. In 2011, our record setting Offense turned the ball over 5 times in the first half whilst the D clamped down, in the second half the offense came alive and the defense crumbled, couldn't stop Alex Smith who had barely completed a pass all day. |
Re: 2007, 2008
Anyone is our spot would have lost that game in Seattle in 2010. TB would have been in that spot if we lost to Atlanta that year in Atlanta. And they would have just played Seattle who would have had fresh knowledge and a better QB. WE just happened to be the unlucky team to have to go on the road against them and that division two more times in four years in their first playoff games of those year.

Re: 2007, 2008
When you have a Hall of Fame QB leading an all time great offense, and since 2006 there is only one Super Bowl and one trip to the NFC Championship game, I would have to strongly agree that is the definition of missed opportunities. Yes, 2010 and 2011 were exceptionally strong teams that should have at a minimum made it to the NFC Championship game.

Re: 2007, 2008
2011 Saints should be an episode of NFL Film's The Lost Rings

Re: 2007, 2008
All good insights. But what if other teams had what ifs at the same time?

By the light of the Full Moon over the Spillway, rolling relentlessly in from the West! Down Airline Drive and into the Vicodin storage locker at the Saints Training Facility!! If you listen carefully you can hear the dreaded whisper "Trust in Spags, Trust in Spags!!!
