Selling Saints, Pelicans greatest gift Tom Benson can give New Orleans

Dear Mr. Benson,

Here's wishing you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

I know the past year has been a trying one for you and your kin. I can only imagine the emotional, spiritual and physical toll it has taken on you to ex-communicate your family and change your succession plan for the New Orleans Saints and Pelicans. I sincerely hope 2016 is a better year for you than 2015.

With that in mind, may I be so bold as to suggest a New Year's resolution that would bring an end to the ugly legal fight between you and your estranged heirs: Sell the Saints and the Pelicans.

I realize it is presumptuous on my part, but I think everyone would agree it is the only way to resolve this unfortunate, untenable situation. Selling your beloved sports franchises is in the best interests of all involved: you, your estranged heirs, the City of New Orleans, the NFL and NBA.

I know you have said before that you have no interest in selling the teams, as you reiterated to me on Saturday.

"We are still building a legacy here not only with the Saints but with the Pelicans," Benson said in a statement to NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune. "Retiring, selling any part of these teams are not part of my thinking in anyway. ... I will leave discussing my legacy to everyone else after I am long gone!"

Your statement is understandable. You did not build your $2 billion empire by backing down from a fight, but the only ones who stand to come out ahead in this legal battle are the two sides' lawyers. Considering the circumstances, the timing and the stakes, selling the teams is the best thing you can do to ensure the long-term health and stability of the franchises.

That'll only entrench him in his position...

If he did sell the Saints & Pelicans could a clause be inserted that the 2 teams can never leave New Orleans?

what an idiot. last thing we need is an owner not invested into the team or the area.

Absolutely this.

Jeff Duncan, the author of this garbage swill, was the guy who made a political stand on women's rights with player wives supposedly being beaten regularly and calling it an NFL-wide pandemic. A pandemic it was not... nor should Tom Benson sell the franchises if he does not want to. Duncan does NOT speak for the fans or the city. He's a hack at best.

I hope Benson bans this sensationalist hack from the media room for trolling an interview and then doing an op-ed body slamming Benson on Christmas day.

I don't read Jeff Duncan anymore and anything he says is total crap.

Hog wash! Maybe Loomis needs to run just one franchise........the Saints. Two franchises looks like more than he can handle. Part of our problems may exist because Loomis has too much responsibility.

Duncan doesn't give a damn about giving New Orleans a gift. He wants to get rid of Payton and he figures the only way that will happen is if the Saints are owned by someone else. He threw the Pelicans in there as camouflage. No wonder so many people dislike him.

Jeff Duncan is a filthy rat aboard a sinking ship called The Times Picayune.
He's had it out for the Saints ever since Payton called him out for lying and being a hack in general.
This is the print media equivalent of click-bait.
Just say no.

You gotta read past the headlines fellas...

Actually, read the article...

Look, Duncan is Duncan, but he's not a complete hack like many of the naitonal writers...

As I said on the other thread (can we merge these mods?!?), Duncan sees how old Tommy Used Cars is, he's there, everyday, seeing the sharks, lawyers, swimming round...

He's sees two combatives in Gayle Gold Digger and Spoiled Rita...

And he's seen what has happened in other franchises...

And don't think he doesn't have "off the record" conversations with Saints personnel and have a better idea of what's transpiring right now...

If Tom dies before the team could go to more stable ownership, he sees the strong possiblitiy of the team exposed to moving and there being a faceless, non-identity holding company running the team and moving it and there being no one to hold accountable...

Take a breath and read and think on the story...

Let's say another billionare buys the Saints, do you think their kids, ex-wives, current whores, and girlfriends will be more upstanding then Gayle or Rita?

Tom isn't the first billionaire with baggage. It's also not against the law to be in your 80's and to own a franchise. He's trying to hand the team off to Gayle to keep the team, and his legacy, in New Orleans. It's our best chance.

I hated Tommy boy years ago, but it wasn't until Gayle showed up that he became a normal human being. Because he has made a turn around, I forgive him for his Katrina threats.

Whatever Duncan says, it's only a black eye on the team and city. Nothing he says will have any impact on Benson. Everything he says is read by the national press and fuels NFL.com hacks. Duncan only writes this to propel his own career and so people will say "oh how cutting edge to write that" when it's garbage. I'm more embarrassed about Duncan than the Rita, Tom and Gayle feud.
