Drew Brees would 'absolutely' extend Saints contract if asked
 

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees said he would "absolutely" extend his contract if approached by the team to do so.

Brees, 36, has one year left on his contract with a cap hit of $30 million. His $19.75 million base salary becomes guaranteed on Feb. 10. By extending his contract, the Saints can relieve some of the salary cap burden.

Brees said Sunday that he wants to stay a Saint, even with the uncertainty surrounding coach Sean Payton and his coaching future.

"I'm very hopeful that we're all gonna be here and prepare ourselves to make a run at it here over the next few years," Brees said.

Brees said he would have no regrets ending his career as a Saint, even if the team doesn't win another Super Bowl.

I like the sound of that. If it happens it might give us enough room to pick up a decent FA Guard or DT.

Definitely deserves it, in the midst of a bad season, Brees had one of his most productive.

Let the man retire a saint.

He said the exact same thing last year.

He wants to stay. We can make it happen pretty easily.

I think its all part of the negotiation process that Loomis has mastered.

I expect Drew will get a new 5 year contract, which in reality is a 3 year extension disguised in a new 5 year contract.

Brees' contract could not be extended before this year or it would have killed us financially. Now is the time. Brees isn't going anywhere. And hopefully neither is Payton.

extended yet restructured at the same time is the only option last year. now this year is a whole lot easier

I want him to retire a Saint too. I was telling my wife the last night that I wouldn't care if we won another SB with him, sometimes a Legend is all we need and I want him to have all records and do it in black & gold. Also told her we will be going to Kansas City next year to watch him play. WhoDat!!!

Ehh... I don't know about Loomis being a master of negotiating. We pay top dollar for pretty much every significant player on our roster. I would say the agent is winning in every case.

The case of extending Drew is, in my opinion, all about what kind of belief they have in Drew going forward. If they think he's got enough left to play at a high level for more than just a year or two, then I think they'll go ahead and get it done. What happens with the rest of the roster is anyone's guess. Mickey has been very sloppy in a number of ways.

I think we will open our morning papers during Mardi Gras season in a couple of weeks from now, and read that Brees has in fact been extended. It's not gonna happen right now, too soon, but it is definitely already in the Inbox on Loomis' desk. In fact, I would literally not be surprised if they already had a broad outline agreed to, with a boilerplate type draft thing already drawn up and printed out, sitting in the desk drawer, with blank spaces for the numbers, and Loomis, Drew, and Tom Condon could sit down and tweak the final details, easily plugging in the numbers over a steak dinner one night, when there's not so much other crazy activity going on!
