New Orleans Saints to restructure front office if Sean Payton stays, CBS Sports reports

The New Orleans Saints would undergo a series of front-office changes that would give them a new general manager if coach Sean Payton stays beyond the end of the 2015 season, CBS Sports reported Sunday.

The report said Mickey Loomis would have less daily involvement with the Saints and become more involved with the New Orleans Pelicans. Also under that scenario, the report said Jeff Ireland, hired in the offseason as an assistant general manager and college scouting director, would assume Saints GM duties.

The report also addressed the possibility of Payton leaving after the season, with the San Diego Chargers and New York Giants listed with the Indianapolis Colts and Miami Dolphins as having interest in the coach.

A possible candidate to replace Payton in that case would be Doug Marrone, a former Saints offensive coordinator and current Jacksonville Jaguars assistant head coach and offensive line coach.

If Loomis isn't GM then Payton can walk free and clear with no compensation

i think they're saying Loomis has been spread too thin. I still think Payton is staying and Brees extends contract and spreads out cap hit over years freeing money.

Brees will stay no doubt. He already said he would restructure. Its Payton I am worried about. Why would they make changes if he stays opposed to if he goes?

My 2 cents, for what its worth. I think both guys are joined at the hip, Drew and Sean. Not a big fan of Jeff Ireland. I like Doug Marrone.

Loomis has to go. We need someone who's gonna be 100% focused on the Saints.

All these opinions. Could you imagine what kind of **** show this would be if they let the fans run the organization? Truth is we have know idea what THEY need or dont need. We dont own the team.

The Colts just signed Pagano to an extension. He would have been the only coach that could ease the pain of loosing Payton. All of the other teams are in interview mode as of today. I believe Payton is staying and the font office may be restructured.

If they were to replace Loomis just don't use Ireland. Leave him in charge of scouting

How do you figure that, Payton is under contract. The league shot down that clause that Payton requested about being tied to Loomis. It's not in his contract.

For those of you who keep saying this is just the media blowing things out of perportion so we shouldnt be worried. When was the last time the sports media has had this much buzz about a situation turn out NOT to be true. People were all saying the same thing when bountygate came out along with the JG trade, JR fiasco, spygate, deflategate etc. Fans said that the media was just grasping at straws in those situations too and look how they turned out. I can remember more things turning out to be true than false. Hell I cant even remember one rumor that turned out to be false.
Like it or not the fact that there is this much buzz on the situation means we should be at least concerned.

Les Miles will coach the Saints, Sean Payton Will coach the Pelicans, Jumbo Fischer to LSU and Pokie Chapman will coach the YWCA.

The sports press is about as accurate as the weatherman now. Just say anything and see what sticks!

Les Miles to Michigan
Nick Sabin to U Texas
Saints cutting ties to Brees (this season)
Sean Payton to Indianapolis (until an hour ago)
RGIII to the Saints

The Saints have been getting dinged on NFL.com by Ian Rappaport every Sunday morning for the past six weeks!

Chuck Pagano. The media has been saying for months how he was going to be fired at the end of the season. They just gave him an extension.

I now know to not put an incling of trust into sources since seeing the source of Loomis allowing Payton to talk to other teams was nick fuqing underhill.

SP will probably get a raise out of this and I don't blame him. If this many teams really want him, why not get more money. Supply and demand. What do we care how much he is paid as long as the job gets done. We will know one way or another by Wednesday.

Yeah and if Benson feels he wants to fork out the cash then go for it. Coaches salaries has no cap.

Re: New Orleans Saints to restructure front office if Sean Payton stays, CBS Sports reports

Believe the possibility is Payton's agent has put it out there to generate a market, leverage for a pay increase; and guess what?!? It is working...

There are several dynamics involved here...

Payton's stock stays up, like most coaches, if he has an elite quarterback...

Payton essentially has had complete autonomy in personnel decisions through Mickey Loomis, human rubberstamp; granted, wanting to have control of your fate in an organization seems logical, this kind of unchecked power never seems to work in the NFL...

Don't get the resistance in this thread to Ireland because since he's been here, you can tell he is his own man and doesn't rubberstamp Loomis/Payton; we're finally seeing an appreciation for draft picks, balance of value/need in the draft and showed better draft discipline; I believe that's healthy, good thing...

Another important dynamic will be Payton's personnel vision vs Ireland's personnel vision moving forward without Loomis rubberstamp influence; now, is Payton asking for more compensation to offset the reduced personnel autonomy?!?

There are those dynamics before you face the inevitable question of Drew Brees, his age, his contract numbers, and deciding the right moment to change quarterbacks...

Is Brees a product of Payton's system?!? Is there a gross inequity in disbursement of contract, cap numbers?!? Does Payton want to groom another quarterback risking his stock value, leverage?!?

Lots and lots of dynamics...

If the Colts talked to Payton’s representatives without the Saints’ permission, that would be a violation of the league’s tampering rules. If the Saints did give Payton permission to negotiate with another team, that could create an awkward dynamic in New Orleans, where Payton would know that the Saints were open to letting him leave and the Saints would know that Payton was interested in talking to another team. It’s never a great sign for a coach’s future if he and his team have both openly looked at the possibilities of parting ways.

Yeah I just don't buy that this office structure is best for NO.

Although look at it as Loomis is taking over as the OWNER and running both organizations essentially GM for all things Benson. Ireland acts / is, GM of Saints and there will be another GM for Pelicans?

I just don't see the front office on the same page and in any winning organization you have to be top notch - top down. We are going in the opposite direction not only on the field but in the front office as well.

Re: New Orleans Saints to restructure front office if Sean Payton stays, CBS Sports reports

Sean Payton has autonomy over this organization. Unfortunately he doesn't know defense as well as he thinks and that has been our down fall. Ireland seemed to do a good job of reeling him in from reaching on draft day. So there is still hope that we are already turning this ship around. But Payton's drinking buddies have got to go!

I'm actually beginning to rethink how I view Loomis. Neither the Saints or Pelicans have done very well under his direction lately.
