What is the rush? There is no reason to do, or at least to finalize anything, until after free agency and the draft.

Financially the Saints could not afford to extend Drew before 2016 because of the cap restrictions. He may have been willing to restructure but the Saints weren't. It's obvious to me that Drew wants to retire a Saint. You could tell how much he wanted Payton to stay and coach in NO where he can continue making and breaking records.

He's a sure fire first time Hall Of Famer after putting up these monster numbers. He won't likely have the same success elsewhere if he leaves for a mega contract.

Drew will rework his contract for several years so that it is still profitable for both Drew and the team. Also, let's not forget that Drew is most recognizable in a Saints uniform and that alone brings him additional money through product endorsements. If he wanted to play out his final year on his current contract and earn a fat check elsewhere he could........but that's worked out badly before.

I feel like we will get a deal done before free agency so that the Saints front office knows what to invest this year on talent to fill our needs before we address the draft.

This team historically brings in mid tier FA's to fill the holes then they draft best player available. Jeff Ireland seems to have an eye for defensive talent and impressed me with how well we drafted last year. I think we will draft best player available from a list of need positions......unless of course we can get Treadwell then to me it's a no brainer. :razz:

Why not Brees has a number in his head(or at least his agent does) and Loomis has a number in his head, why not go ahead and save us the any suspense? Brees says he wants to be here and Loomis does to, so just get it out of the way and concentrate on FA and the draft. Seems like buisness deals are so very complicated when how much money is involved.

Why save us suspense? We have nothing to do with it. I am quite happy to wait and see what happens in its own sweet time.

The sooner they get him extended, the sooner the team knows how much money it has freed up to potentially make a run at other free agents. It would not be advantageous to wait till after free agency. I'm not guaranteeing it gets done before then, but it would be better if it did.
