ESPN writer attacks Saints’ ‘wasting’ of franchise player

It's not an attack when it is true!

“The New Orleans Saints are wasting one of the NFL’s all-time great quarterbacks, likely at the expense of Drew Brees‘ career legacy. Whether the league deserves some of the blame for its franchise-altering punishment in the bounty scandal is a topic for another day. Just know that the toughest opponent Brees must overcome each week is the Saints’ own defense.”

Sando continued:

“Just how bad is it for Brees?

He is one of six quarterbacks with a 70-plus Total QBR score over the past two seasons combined. The other five have won 72.7 percent of their games, posting a 96-36 record. Brees has won just 45.2 percent (14-17 record) despite playing about as well. That is because the Saints’ defense has not just been bad. It has been horrific.”

The Saints wasted their opportunity w Dome Patrol just by keeping Carl Smith as OC in the 80's.

Not surprised in the least.

The defense has wasted Brees' talent since 2010.

earth shaking reporting by espn.

then again the hiring of Spags and Ryan were reported as super bowl moves by this same rag.

Sando mentions the "Brees and Flacco effects" and makes no mention of their salary cap gobbling numbers...

Sorry, glad he's our quarterback, but Brees and Flacco got a little too greedy...

Give Brees the Defense that Flacco had and Brees would have about 3 Superbowl rings so far

Give Flacco the defense that Brees has played with and he'd be lucky to win 3 games a season.

Brees has the same number of Superbowl wins as the likes of Peyton Manning, Brett Favre, Dan Mari....no, he didn't win one.

I don't get the point of writing an article like this. Do I feel like we could have and should have won more by now? Yeah, I do. But Drew isn't being wasted anymore then any QB in the history of the game. He's paid (a ton) to do his job. Our defense sucks... So what, should we have not had Drew?

If we hadn't re-signed him, we'd have money for other things, but then this guy would have written how stupid we were for letting Brees go. If you're going to write about this, you better start writing about a bunch of other wasted players.

Isn't Brees' contract on par with other QBs at his level? Though I agree his contract takes up alot of cap space, the Saints have signed some big names in free agency during this time, but several have been big mistakes. Brees makes the offense. His contract is worth it. If we could sign one defensive player who would make as big an impact on the defensive side of the ball as Brees does on the offensive side I'd be OK with giving him the same amount of money.

Wouldn't matter if Brees played for free with the "amazing" talent we've had filling the DC, defensive coach and special teams coaching positions for the past five years.

They've been wasting talent on the defensive side too...

Sandy is wasting his space at that rag of an online magazine... he should give way to better talent as his writing sucks donkey kongs. He just wishes his favorite team even had Drew Brees!

How is he too greedy? Almost half the QB's in the league have bigger contracts than Brees. He simply got what the market was willing to pay. Twenty-five, or more, other teams would have loved to have had Brees at those exact same numbers. This is a business and the players are businessmen first and foremost. Any QB stupid enough to sign a deal for less than their market value is an idiot and I certainly don't want an idiot at QB.

Brees and his contract have NEVER been an issue with the Saints success, or lack thereof.

Drew was ranked 8th this last season for highest annual salary for a quarterback, he's the 3rd highest in his own division behind Cam and Ryan, Sandy needs to stfu and go back to writing for some bubblegum rag

it took all of about 5 seconds to find that info

The game has changed. Times have changed. It's all about the money we all know this. How the Patriots do it, hell, who know's. Drew got paid, Thanks god he did but it hurt us.

I have to disagree. Bad personnel decisions hurt us. What Brees got paid had nothing to do with it.

Agree with that: some very bad personnel decisions.

Totally agree. It hurt the ability for a couple top tier FA and several mid tier FA for solid depth and we need that because of the sad way we have drafted over the years.

Re: ESPN writer attacks Saints’ ‘wasting’ of franchise player

I never understood the Ryan signing and even when we won the Superbowl the defense was suspect.
