Jon Gruden says how Sean Payton used stack of cash as Super Bowl motivator

1 Attachment(s)
New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton has used many methods to motivate his team during his 10 years with the organization. This one, as told by Jon Gruden, might be a new one.

Gruden, in a Q&A with Men's Fitness posted Thursday, recalled how Payton motivated his team as it marched toward Super Bowl 44 six years ago, when a local bank helped Payton remind his players about the large payout from the NFL for winning the Super Bowl that season.

Asked by Men's Fitness about what makes a great halftime speech, Gruden said the following:

"You try to say a few words about how the team will never be together again. The way free agency, the draft, and everything impacts rosters and coaching staffs, nothing stays the same.

"Or, when Sean Payton was on his mission toward their Super Bowl [with the New Orleans Saints], he had one of the local banks come in and lay out a hundred grand in cash: 'This is what you're playing for — per man.'"

If even true, this happened in 2009 so I don't care what/if anything happens from Gruden's story. Joe Thiesman said something about wanting to win the Super Bowl for the extra payout. Payton was just smart enough to get a local. bank to supply the funds. This just proves money talks and bull**** walks

It is a professional sport and they do play for money, don't they? I use to show my kids hundred dollar bills to get them excited about earning a little money, #shrug. Only thing Sean was guilty of is 'motivational parenting', IMO, :).

What's this "hundred dollar bill" you speak of? I've never heard of such a thing...

In actual reply to all this...I think it's weird that he showed them money. JMO. I'd rather he talk about how they should be playing for their team, for their families, for something else other than money.

The players are rich enough lol. But I guess whatever motivates them. I'm not going to argue with the man's method...they won the Superbowl.

Wasn't there an alleged "stack of cash" involved in the bounty scandal? I refuse to put the word "Gate" after every scandal. Hell, if it happened today it would have been "The Watergate Gate" scandal!! STUPID Media! (Isn't that a redundant statement?)

Hold on here. What in the hell is the big deal? I have no doubt Payton did exactly what Gruden said he did. Why not? There is nothing wrong with it in any way. It is not against any NFL rules to demonstrate what can be earned by stacking cash money out there. Nor is it morally wrong to do the same. Nor is it in any way legally wrong to show an example of what you will honestly receive if you win the game.

There is no negative interpretation to the halftime demonstration. Gruden was simply giving an example of what makes Payton so great at motivation.

The dumbass writer tried to make a horrible analogy based off a positive story.

I'm sure there were other things he mentioned as well in his motivational speech, not just the money side of things!

The fact that when you are playing in the Superbowl, everyone of your family, friends, neighbours etc are going to be watching you and saying thats my Husband/Dad/Brother/Uncle/Neighbour out there and they will be watching your every move! That alone would make me want to bring back that lovely big silver Trophy and make them all proud of me and my team!

Hey! The money is good too though! :-)

GEAUX SAINTS!!

Gruden was not criticizing Payton for the money demonstration. He was praising Payton for a great motivational ploy. There are very few, if any, out there that are bigger Sean Payton fans than John Gruden. There was absolutely no negative connotation in anything that Gruden said ... at all.

:whatever:

Re: Jon Gruden says how Sean Payton used stack of cash as Super Bowl motivator

I think you all are missing the point. It was a motivation speech to the players. Each player get a bonus from the NFL for playing in the play off games and the Super Bowl game it is a fact. Even though bonus isn't the correct word because your contract pays you for the regular season games - doesn't pay you for anything outside of that. NFL kicks in the bonus to pay you for play offs and SB. So using cash money to show them what they are playing for is nothing wrong or illegal about that it was motivation - this is what you are playing for!

I think the real gem is what was in Sean's book. Look at what they did to motivate and make the Colts feel like the away team. They put up billboards for the most like route the Colts would take to the hotels and practive field 'MIAMA is SAINTS COUNTRY. The presents that were left in the rooms of the players like clothes that they would then wear out on the town in front of the Colts players and families and then stay out an hour later than the Colts. Creating a total distraction for the Colts. All fair and game lol.

maybe it happened, maybe not
maybe it was the motivation, maybe not

I do know that Brees makes $1.5 million per game, and the 'average' player gets $300,000 a game, so if those players are motivated by an extra $45K (2009 actual payout less what a loser would get), so be it

That's an incredible statistic right there 1.5 million per game.
Hard to wrap ones mind around that.
