Saints hot for RT Miller!!!!

Look for the New Orleans Saints to make a quick and aggressive run at Fred Miller, the right offensive tackle who was part of the Tennessee Titans' bloody payroll purge earlier this week. New Orleans officials will allow their incumbent at the position, Victor Riley, to depart as an unrestricted free agent. Riley played well at times during his time in New Orleans, but team officials never really warmed to him, and feel they can do better. And even though Miller is about 18 months older than Riley, he appears to be the player with whom the Saints feel they can make an improvement. Signing nine-year veteran Miller, whose representative already has been contacted by New Orleans, also would buy the Saints more time to develop Jon Stinchcomb, a second-round choice in 2003. Stinchcomb hasn't played much in his first two seasons, but the Saints still hold him in high regard. They just don't believe he is ready to be a starter yet. One other team to watch with Miller is St. Louis, where he began his career. The Rams are attempting to rebuild their line, and it's a given that tackle Kyle Turley won't be back, not with the acrimony that exists between him and coach Mike Martz. Miller played four seasons in St. Louis and was the starting right tackle on the team's Super Bowl XXXIV victory after the 1999 season before departing in free agency just a month after the championship win.

18 months older than Riley. How old does that make him? I thought about it when he was cut by Tenn but then I remembered his age. If he is an upgrade over Riley though, get her done!!!

Great news as far as I\'m concerned!!

Isn\'t it ironic that the Saints and Rams are bothing seeking the same guy to replace a departed Kyle Turley!

Name: Fred Miller
Position: Offensive Tackle
Grade: 72 | Key
Alert: A

Comment:
Miller has thrived in the Titans\' offensive scheme and has had his best two pro seasons from \'02-\'03. Miller has really improved his technique and feel for his position. He has always been a massive, mauling run blocker. He has excellent lower body strength, shows the ability to move the pile in the running game and plays with a mean streak. Gives great effort on every snap and works to finish his blocks. However, Miller will always be a better run blocker than pass blocker. He just isn\'t a great athlete. He has a tendency to lunge at his blocks and plays top heavy. Appears uncomfortable in space, lacks great lateral mobility and has problems reaching the moving target at the second level as a run blocker. Overall, While Miller will never be a great pass protector, he has improved enough in that area and seems to get better with age because he\'s a hard worker.

If we sign him..who will back him up?...keep Riley too?

I would prefer a younger guy..but .they don\'t come cheap...

If he can play..might as well play here...I just hope IF we do get him..they get him for a reasonable sum....man..we\'re getting old on the tackle position...

Even if we sign him..it only bails us out for a little while..and that\'s optomistic....

maybe he\'ll suprise us..and just dominate

Riley is gone. Hopefully he\'s going to retire because I wouldn\'t sign him to ride the pine. Heck I wouldn\'t sign him to be our waterboy. We\'d get some kind of 15 yard penalty somehow. He\'ll probably bring it to the wrong bench to the other team.

No doubt he\'s gone. Not only has he played poorly, but he\'s been in two fist-fights with players, and Haz won\'t stand for that. He\'s gone.

So the question really should be, not will they keep Riley, but will they keep Spencer Folau after that knee surgery.

Right tackle was one of the positions I wanted the Saints to make a move for in free agency, so I\'m all for it. And although the coaching staff has done a poor job developing Stinchcomb - switching positions etc. - I haven\'t given up on him and could see him taking over the RT position in 2006.
Of course, this leaves us with Wayne Gandy at LT, who will become more and more of a liability.
Anyway, the team will be better off with the signing of Miller at a reasonable price.

Its his third season and he\'s not ready to be a starter yet. Way to use a high draft pick wisely!!!

a good feeling huh turbo? firsts and seconds that cannot even make the active roster- sullivan, stinch, devery. i cannot understand... they aren\'t even good enough to run down on kickoffs or punts? i dunno which it is or which is worse, stupid players or stupendously bad front office decisions.

Except that perhaps Miller won\'t false start as often as Riley, I think the difference in the two players is negligable. Though Miller\'s older and will probably be more expensive (OT\'s almost always get overpaid in FA).

What the heck is wrong with Stinchcomb? OT shouldn\'t require a dramatic learning curve ... and if he\'s not physically adept after 3 years of NFL workouts, he\'s probably never gonna be.

Who knows? Maybe Stinchcomb is really a monster, but ol\' Haz sees him for the \"locker room cancer\" he really is!!! :P

PS: Maybe we could start feeding all the \"locker room cancers\" to Sullivan. They\'d be gone, so we wouldn\'t owe them anything. And it\'d be a way for Sully to make himself useful around the place ... and even earn some of that fat paycheck!

Not so fast guys....

Sullivan is what he is. Or should I say, he HAS been what he HAS been. The guy is obviously immature. They drafted him after his junior season and he hasn\'t made the transitioon to the pros like we would have liked.

There\'s no doubt this guy had the talent to make him a top 10 pick. Unless every scout in this country was wrong. I can\'t fault Haslett for picking the guy. I fault Sullivan for not being a man and stepping up to the plate.

I\'m also not willing to write Sullivan off YET. Just like the coaching staff, I\'m going to give him this year to get it done.

Sullivan could be one of the most domiante forces on the defense this year. It\'s up to him, though.

Jon Stinchcomb I don\'t know about. He was never rated very highly coming out of college. So, there\'s some concerns for me about his physical ability. Obviously Haslett and co. didn\'t intend for him to start for the first coulpe of years. He definately wasn\'t going to start in Gandy\'s spot. And Victor Rilely had a pretty good year a couple of seasons ago.

I will say that Stinch should be able to contribute in his third year. Which is this year. This year hasn\'t gotten here YET folks. Give the kid a chance.

We should get proven commodoties to play key positions like DT and OT. This is why I endorsed the Gandy move when it first happened (that may be egg on my face now, but I don\'t think he was THAT bad... he\'s just getting slow).

Our coaching staff has failed to develop a number of players over the last few years - Sully and Stinch are obvious examples. Two seasons should be enough for first and second round picks (OT... maybe... three years, but a DT picked in the first round should have an immediate impact).

Who are the guys we\'ve successfully developed? Charles Grant. Who else? It is getting hard to name any. Duece maybe?

I guess, I have a penchant for getting FA\'s to fill certain kinds of gaps. The draft is great for two to three years down the road, unless you get a DLineman or RB. Sometimes DBs and LBs are ready to start right away, but even that is questionable.

I wonder what our track record for developing our 1st and 2nd rounders really is like over the last few years. At the moment, I don\'t have a lot of faith in them. Until I can see it otherwise, I am going to favor FA and slightly overpaying players to drafting.

OK, I\'m rambling.

Le Charles Bentley, Montre\' Holland, Deuce McAllister, Darren Howard, Charles Grant, and Will Smith are all 1st or 2nd roudners.

Then there\'s guys like Fakir Brown and Colby Bockwoldt, Boo Williams and Courtney Watson who were 2nd round picks or lower who show a lot of potential.

And let\'s not forget about guys like Joe Horn and Michael Lewos who were nothing before they got to the Saints.

And Stallworth isn\'t doing bad. He was hurt a lot during his first 2 seasons and his development has been slowed because of it.

And we won\'t even mention our QB.. ;)

Gumbo, you are an enigma to me. You write a diatribe in another thread about how Watson isn\'t cutting it and should be replaced immediately. Then you write a closing statement here that defends Sullivan AND Stinchcomb. I don\'t see how this is possible.

For the record, I\'m hoping Sullivan comes back this season with a fire and shows why he was drafted so high. I don\'t think it\'s outside of the realm of possibilities, either.
I\'d like to see Stinchcomb be the next great OT, but I don\'t think its likely. I thought that was a crappy pick then and I still do now.
