Why extend Haslett's contract?

I know it happened a while back, but I am puzzled. Sure, we have been competitive, but it I can't find the logic in giving him two years on top of the two he still had left. Especially in light of the fact that the four-game win streak at the end of the season saved his job. What was management thinking?

Why extend Haslett's contract?

It\'s my understanding that Haslett has NOT been given a contract extention.

And Haslett does NOT deserve one at this point, IMO.

He needs to prove, this year, that he can get this team in the playoffs.

I thought Haslett needed to be fired. That is, until I witnessed the last 4-games. I like what I saw I and I think there\'s a good chance it could carry over into next season.

So far, I like the direction this team is headed. I like the plan. We\'ll see..........

It is official my arse hairs are on fire .

Hasbeen has been given a contract extension , but he has not signed it because he wants more money .... :bandhead:

This combined with the hiring of Sheppard at the Offensive Coordinator position is giving me a case of postal fever ...

Why extend Haslett's contract?

If he\'s in a position to seek more money then he\'s in a better position than I thought. This isn\'t even the last year of the last extension, is it? I just don\'t see how the past 5 years has been good enough for another extension.

after the last 4 games of last season i\'d like to see what jim can do for us. but in no means does that warrant an extension.

Why extend Haslett's contract?

The only extension Hasbeen is worthy of , is an extension of the arm pointing the way out of town .....

I am really beginning to wonder if Benson has something up his sleeve on this . If he cannot iron things out with the state he might have the new city , new coach and GM thought bubbling in his head .

Why extend Haslett's contract?

It is hard to get a credible OC when the HC only has a year left on his contract, because if Haz\'s head rolled after this year, more than likely so would the new OC\'s.

Why extend Haslett's contract?

That is why Loomis should have gone to Denver and talked to Kubiak and offered him the Offensive Coordinator position that Kubiak could have turned into a head coaching position .

Hire Kubiak as the Offensive Coordinator / Asst. Head Coach .

If Kubiak was any good , fire Hasbeen and turn the reigns over to Kubiak .

Why extend Haslett's contract?

When you compare Deadlines...L.A....The Saints contract with the State...(which has now been temporarily abolished), you can get the sense the Benson is holding on to what he has now..rather than go for the \"Gusto\'\'..

Benson is waiting to see what is going to happen with this L.A. thing...I guarantee it, and until a deal is signed with the State...or we just flat out leave..you will likely see very little changes ahead...heck..the Off Season thus far should have shown that..with the blind eye turned toward Has and Venturi...and the moving up of assistant coaches , so as to not be forced into hiring many new people...

Why extend Haslett's contract?

LA is a weak bend the state over ploy by Benson .

Two cuts from a article in an Los Angeles based paper ....

Quote:

Since 1995, after the Rams and Raiders left, the National Football League has not had a team in Los Angeles. Some say that empty nest — though it would seem, at first glance, a deficiency in the league lineup — has actually reaped enormous dividends for the league and team owners.

In cities across the nation — Phoenix, Seattle, Indianapolis — owners have used the absence of a Los Angeles franchise as leverage. They have extracted concessions worth hundreds of millions of dollars from taxpayers while threatening — though it is rarely said explicitly, and doesn\'t have to be — to move to L.A.
Quote:

Many analysts say the strategy of using Los Angeles for leverage is about to run its course — just as communities and government officials are getting wise.

It is virtually certain that no public money, at least in the form of general funds, will go toward building a stadium or renovating an existing one in Los Angeles.

I know what your saying...An I have read the same sort of things before...

However..Tags and crew are just convinced that L.A. is a must have...

You and I, and several others will agree that L.A. is a wild goose chase..many have tried to corner the marketin that area...all have eventually failed...

Whether we like it or not, L.A. is big time on the list of things to do, and it\'s coming down to crunch time on meeting the propose deadline of getting a team in there...We are top on the list...or, at least in the top 2...

It makes sense for the 2008 season opener of the Los Angeles Diablos .

Tag sees the huge market factor , a market that is 50 % Hispanic with these numbers growing daily . The Coliseum is a pit even the Raider players were afraid to go in and out of . The Rose Bowl and Anaheim stadium are the only other venues even close enough to hold an N.F.L. game in . The Rose Bowl is not interested from last I heard and Anaheim stadium would put the team behind the orange curtain with the most finiky fan base .

Another rumor in the wind is the the league is going to deny the sale of the Vikings to the prospective owner based upon his financial situation . He has the money to get the Vikes but not much more .....

I have heard about this too..He made his money in Plastic cups and stuff like that I believe...and while he would ahev the money..The League can nay afford a Bankrupt Owner, who mave have gotten in over his head...The Financial Office will have the final say...

However..The League also has interest in seeing the first black Owner come into the League..and that may come into play...

If they want a team in the Los Angeles area so bad why wouldn\'t the league block the sale and bring in an owner from the Los Angeles area to fill that void .

The Los Angeles area is a lot more finicky about it\'s teams , the goal should be to start from scratch , New Team with a new name and logo .Initial sales would boom because of the inagural season merchandise .

Los Angeles Matadors

If they move someone elses team to Los Angeles then they will be moving that team back in 5 years .

If the Raiders did not make it with the black and silver and the crossbones , no way the Saints in black and gold and a French Crest on the side of their helmet would .

I think the Leagus isn\'t overly concerned with the Vikings somehow screwing up the L.A. thing, by selling, or whatever..

The only real interset shown by an Owner to move to L.A. has come from Benson...He is the only one who has mentioned out in the open that moving was a strong possibility...

The other Owners may be using the L.A. scenario as a lure to get more funding for a new Stadium...But none have hinted or even mentioned the possibility of the teamactually moving if they didn\'t get thier way...Benson has...

I don\'t think the League as a whole has too many concerns as to who will be moving...all fingers, including that of the Team Owner, point in this direction..

Hey Billy, I\'m not trying to pick on you, but what, exactly, is that direction?

As far as I can tell, this looks exactly like the past three or four offseasons.

Haslett promises BIG changes that will really work this time. In reality, the team lets coaches leave and just promotes some position coach with some questions as to his performance IN NEW ORLEANS. Then they hire some veteran position coaches and convince the fans that this will fix everything. In FA, they tagged Howard, and are talking about making very few moves, maybe at OG or S - nevermind LB...

Yes, I\'m omitting a number of rumors, and speculation. I\'m making a point - and that is that things don\'t seem to be going in a new or different direction to me. So seriously, what do you see that I\'m missing?

I\'m with WhoDat on this one. I was surprised that even with the 4 wins to end out the season Haslett was able to keep his job. They did win but there were several coaching decisions or non decisions that could\'ve cost any one of those remaining games. Letting D Brooks run free at A Brooks all day without double teaming him in the TB games is just one. He seems to let the problems that go on, Go on just a little too long in my mind.....Kinda sounds like Benson???

Why extend Haslett's contract?

WhoDat --

Obviously we BOTH see all the mistakes Haslett and co. have made in the past. It seems you think the mistakes will continue or that we will get no better as long as Haslett and co. are in charge.

That\'s where we differ. I\'m not saying Haslett is gonna get the job done, I really have no way of knowing that. If you want to point to the past and make your case against Haslett then, you win. In the past Haslett has failed. There\'s no changing that.

Why do I like the direction of this team?

Well, for one, I think Haslett got away from the smash-mouth style on both offense and defense and went finesse on us. And as a result, I think we\'ve gotten beat-up on both sides of the ball.

Maybe I\'m old-school. But, I believe games are won and lost in the trenches. Our offensive line has really killed us, in one way or anothe, the past couple of seasons. Haslett appears to be addressing that this offseason. So, I like the direction he is going with the offensive line.

Also, penalties have killed us on offense. Haslett is simplifying the offensive termonology and reducing the number of redudant plays. I think that will help. It makes sense to ME. I like that change.

Haslett is also planning to utilize Deuce more in both the runniing and passing game. I like the direction he is going there.

Mike Sheppard is going to utlize more offensive sets with Deuce and Aaron Stecker on the field together with Stecker getting more screen passess. I like the sound of that.

On defense, it looks like Tebucky is gone and we\'re going to get a safety that will make some plays. I like the sound of that.

On defense they changed the \"scheme\" the last 4-games and I saw the biggest improvement in years. I like the direction they are headed there.

We\'ve got Mike McKenzie from jump this year. I like that.

We will also have another number one pick this year. Most likely on defense.

That\'s some of the more positive things I see...

Gumbo, All great points. I just wonder about using Stecker and Deuce in passing situations too often. I feel that will take away from their runs when they are called upon. I like Stecker a lot. I guess my point is that With a tight end that could step up maybe we could elliminate over using Deuce?? What do you think?

WhoDat did not get it so I am gonna have fun .

Bank on it , same garbage different year . Same old story with some new faces .

Quote:

First off I think it is Sheppard who is Simplifing the offense , and the reason for doing it would be great if it stops Brooks from making plays up in the huddle and sending Duece into the wrong hole .

Quote:

Deuce had about 30 % of the total offensive touches last season . 30 - 40 percent would be good for Deuce , otherwise the offense becomes one dimensional .

Great more screens . The one plays the Saints run the worst in the league .

Who brought Tebucky here in the first place ??? Hasbeen picks safeties like he picks DT\'s in the draft .

Owners saying they play like High Schoolers might have helped too .

Like any of the previous years defensive picks have the team ranking any higher then almost dead last at the end of the year .

Why extend Haslett's contract?

Billy - a well-put argument. One that I ultimately disagree with, but at least you clearly delineated your opinions. That\'s more than I can say for some people. :)

I guess I just don\'t understand how you do it. I\'m inclined to agree with 08 here. I can certainly understand why the offseason makes a person hopeful. Thinking about what the team MAY do or what COULD be - it seems like anything is possible and that lends well to the, \"maybe this is our year\" mentality.

However, I don\'t know how you discount the past like you seem to be able to do. I mean, you\'re right, games are won in the trenches. That\'s why I was really upset to see Roaf leave, Turley leave, Wayne no-good Gandy signed, Fontenot allowed to leave. Now the line is questionable and people wonder why.

But you say that the Saints know that the line is a problem and are going to fix it. I just don\'t know what you base that opinion on other than hope. Did they fix the D-line in \'01 when they went from Glover and Johnson to Hand and I don\'t even know who out DE was. Whitehead? How about \'02, \'03, \'04? Has the D-line ever lived up? Have the Saints adequately addressed areas of needs the last 4 years? Did they shore up the LB position? S? Even CB is still a problem in terms of depth. But this year will be different b/c there are reports that the team may be interested in a RT?

I\'m not saying you\'re wrong man. Not at all. I just don\'t understand how you can come back every offseason and truly believe that this year, all the new moves that the Saints are peddling are really the right ones. Now they understand. It\'s just amazing that you have that kind of faith or ability to continue to believe. I feel fairly confident that they could go 8-8 for the next ten years and in 2015 you\'d say that you liked all of their offseason moves.

JOESAM2002 03-02-2005 08:40 AM

Why extend Haslett's contract?

The thing that get me is, every year Has and his people sell us a bill of goods on all the little moves they make saying that these will get us over the edge. Yet still we thrive in mediocrity. Talk about a selling job. Still it\'s hard not to get caught up in the hype each new offseason. I know I still do after all these years. I guess the old adage is correct, \"the proof is in the pudding.\" We\'ll see if there\'s any proof starting tomorrow. Or if there\'s even any pudding at all for the Saints.

I said I liked the \"direction\" this team is headed. At least based on the reports from the Saints.

I did not say I thought we were anywhere close to being the kind of team that we need to be.

After hearing that Loomis/Haslett don\'t plan to do much in free-agency ... Well, I don\'t like the direction that is headed.
