Can Brandon Coleman replace Marques Colston?

1 Attachment(s)
When you look at Brandon Coleman and Marques Colston and see the similarities in their builds, it’s hard not to begin making comparisons between the two players.

While Coleman is listed two inches taller at 6-foot-6, both men are roughly the same size and have similar body types. These measurements long led to the assumption that when Colston’s time came to an end in New Orleans, as it did this week, Coleman would be tapped to fill the void.

General manager Mickey Loomis fanned the flames last month by referring to Coleman as Colston’s heir apparent, and in many ways, he likely is going to be asked to take on a bigger role in the offense next season.

There is, however, nothing apparent about the situation. There are hopes. There are assumptions. There are even some likelihoods. But nothing is guaranteed about Coleman’s ability to step in and capably fill the void left behind by Colston.

While similar, these two players are different in just as many ways. That much became clear after going back through the tape of the 2015 season and charting how each man was used in the offense.

When Colston landed with the Saints in 2006, he was at the forefront of the movement that saw teams using bigger receivers in the slot. Not much has changed since then.

Lets start by holding on to the ball.

He's an adequate replacement for the no. 12 we saw in 2014 and 2015. To replace the no. 12 from 2006 to 2013; ain't no way

I think he can, he's only gonna get better... We even saw improvement as last season went on...

BC needs to make the most of his opportunities starting in camp.

Outside of the size, I don't see many similarities to the great M Colston.

He has to get better. We only need about 60 catches, 750 yards and 8 TD's from him.

Considering he had 30 catches for 454 yards and 2 TD's, I'd say he's well on his way...

I read a break down of Colstons and Colemans routes and it told where they lined up for the majority of their snaps. Coleman runs a majority of his routes out and up from the outside while Colston religiously went across the middle from the slot. Coleman doesn't really run the same routes as #12 the way I understand it. I don't see Coleman being the heir apparent to Colston who was a tight end in college.iirc

I wonder if he can run Coistons routes. I agree and think Paytons looking to draft the new Colston 2.0. I wouldn't argue if he could put up # like Colston did. Colston produced his rookie season and many years after.

Typically its not about replacing one players production with another player.

Its about replacing a players production through schemes.

Maybe Coleman does more, and maybe we throw more to the RB's and/or TE's. Maybe we scheme to get Cooks and Snead more involved and we sign a player to help with the distribution.

We don't need someone to do everything that Colston did, we need our offense to involve others to compensate.

We didn't miss much when we lost Graham, we just adjusted to his absence and got more people involved.

Re: Can Brandon Coleman replace Marques Colston?

With Colston and Graham both gone, wow, that's really gonna hurt...

NWIH does Coleman replace Colston - No Way IH...

Wanted to draft Coleman as depth behind Colston; but, quite frankly, he reminds me of Stonehands from Necessary Roughness...

Some Johnny-come-latelys' who've been critical of Colston forget how clutch he was for Drew; thereby making Drew look clutch with Colston having that big catch radius of a bucket to drop the ball in on crucial third downs...

Age caught up to him, and that's what it is...

But the guy we need to select at 12 if he's there and validates the value of the selection is...

Could not have been better said.

I'm sick of this question. Just because somebody has the height and length of someone else, that doesn't mean they are going to produce like a like-bodied person. If Coleman was going to be anything he would have proved it last year when he was put into that role. He was gift wrapped Colston's role on the team, but he's just not good enough, and it's just not going to happen. Reminds me of the saying "hope in one hand and **** in the other and see which one fills up faster."

Bottom line, I'm tired of mediocre receivers like Coleman.

REPLACE!?!?!

You can't replace him. All you can do is find another body to play a position. With who that player turns out to be is what you have.

Re: Can Brandon Coleman replace Marques Colston?

Euphoria I hear you.

replace Marques?????? say what?

Coleman has not earned first name recognition yet so I am not going there

Coleman has made great progress in year two and I am expecting more out of him next year. Goal is to hold onto the number 4 WR position on the depth chart. That is all I expect.

If be seasons end he has cemented himself as the 4th WR I will be happy. If he takes over the 3? I will be blown away.

The kid was and still is a project

hes more likely to have 70 catches for 1000 yards, ive been studing his maturity and he was gaining trust as the season went on, you could see him dropping candy routes and being disgusted with himself; then he would make colston type grabs out of nowhere later on, and getting more plays his way, meaning payton let the slack in the bridle on the 6-6 heir apparent to colston. just a different type of colston. hes got moves a lot quicker than colston after the catch. anyone see that, he can avoid the bash by ducking or slashing by the hit sometimes , turns in faster than colston,. I really believe he can step in and get it done.jmo. but yes he does not have colston hands like the younger years.

He's definitely a lot faster than Colston, just needs to work on his concentration and watching the ball into his hands.

He did make some very nice catches and showed good run after the catch, like the one in dome vs Carolina, Brees threw the ball behind him, he spun to make the high catch, eluded a defender and sprinted down the field for 30 yards.
