Saints and G Senio Kelemete agreed to a two-year contract, per source

The New Orleans Saints have signed offensive lineman Senio Kelemete to a two-year contract extension, a source told NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune on Sunday.

Kelemete was set to become a restricted free agent next week. By signing him to new a contract, the Saints avoided the tender process.

The Saints and G Senio Kelemete agreed to a two-year contract, per source. Kelemete, 25, was scheduled to be a restricted free agent. Rather than tender him, the Saints worked out a two-year deal. Terms have not been disclosed. Kelemete, who was a backup and spot starter last year, should have a chance to compete for one of the Saints' starting guard jobs after they let go of veteran Jahri Evans last month.

I know you guys don't like him but we need depth too and he could start if need be at guard or center. High character guy that I'm glad we'll keep around.

Good.

He can play Guard, Center and Tackle.

Not worth the 2 million a year he got. Never thought they would spend that much. I figured that would be Leito's deal. No telling what he will get now.

I can only see this is as a leverage signing with non-guaranteed funds so as to go into negotiations with Lelito and Left-Guard-To-Be-Named...

Again, had a helluva an opportunity last season to sign Cincinnati Free Agent Left Guard Clint Boling last season for essentially 5.25 mil/season...

Boling grades out well with PFF and he man-handled our defense the season before, In Our House!!!

Worst case, we could have had Boling for 5.5 mil, maybe 6 mil/season, virtually giving us some salary cap room...

http://espn.go.com/blog/cincinnati-b...ract-breakdown

And essentially locked up the interior of the line with Lelito for four years making the entire unit near elite again...

But Brandon Browner got the money instead...

Executive of the Year, my a$$; sorry to hurt some of y'all's feelings, but...

In Loomis, I do not trust...

Thankfully we've got Ireland now; maybe he can continue to guide us toward better personnel moves...

90% of the leagues back ups could man handle our D. And Loomis did not pick Browner. Loomis just got the money. Payton and his coaching staff along with his scouts picked Browner. When are people going to learn that Loomis is the money man. Payton has full control of the team otherwise.

Well then, he's not a general manager, he's a cap manager...

A general manager knows to reign in a head coach and make him defend his personnel decisions...

And then I'd ask, who wanted Browner?!? Terry Fontenot, Director of Pro Scouting?!?

If Fontenot rubber-stamped the decision to sign Browner, then somewhere in there should be some accountability...

I have a feeling this means Lelito will get the lowest tender and we'll let him walk if another team offers him a deal. It sure seems like insurance in case another team is dumb enough to offer him starting guard money.

It's part of the BPA and camp competition scenario.

2nd round pick needs someone to back him up

he has been a pet project. so i guess i will sit back and watch his development for two more years. I am trying to see what exactly it is that gets him all of this love. maybe this will be a break out year

He was terrible at RG and was really the big reason while people thought Strief was struggling. He looked better at the end of the season however and did a serviceable job when he had to start instead of Armstead the last game. I hope he doesn't start but I think he can provide good depth for a game or two.

nder.

Not a chance Leito gets the lowest tender. We need 2 guards and even with the 2 million price tag im not sure they think Kelemete is a starter. I see 2 more guards coming in through FA or the draft.

Seems a tad pricey for a back-up, spot starter.

Maybe because he can back-up all 3 interior positions?

Strange... we so seldom over-pay players.

I think he can back-up all over the line and guys like that are hard to find. That might be why.

Two Million a year is a little steep for a back up. Even though he can play three spots on the line it doesn't mean he can play them adequately. I jokingly refer to him as Calamity(phonetically that is what I see). Anyway maybe he can develop into a good player. Still. Two million?

I feel like Lelito could play RG relatively well but I want to bring in two starting guards preferably through free agency. Yes. We can afford it. We definitely need to sign two starters and draft someone to compete for a starting spot. Protecting Drew is my number one priority. Yes. Even before defense. Which is why I want free agent guards.

I think paying him starting G money would not be smart also, but he's not bad as a C and a team might pay him a little better for that..

Wait, two million dollars for a back up. That can't be right.

Solid Back up and we need those fellas. Let's keep this stuff in perspective. They didn't sign him thinking we're going to the Superbowl with this one. But Saints talking about JR Sweezy and if Senio works really hard you could have a pretty good interior O Line for little money

Year 1 is 1.3 million.

Thats 20th in the NFL.

Does anyone think he's the 20th best LG in the NFL?

Its about the 40th highest contract for all OG's.

Wow, we overpay again.

It is a little pricey since we could've retained him for half of that with a cheap RFA tender. However, Kelemete can play all five positions on the O-Line if need be and I think that's a very valuable quality to have on the team. Plus I have a feeling that we're not going to bring back Lelito... No reason behind it; just a hunch.

No, he is the GM but it has been declared by Benson, the owner, that Payton is running the whole show. If you have to point the finger at anyone for not reigning in Payton point it at Benson. In this organization the GM does not have the power to "reign in" the coach. Loomis is a cap manager, that is his strongpoint, and is part of the reason he is here. Loomis has a lot less control over team operations than most GMs in the league have, especially when it comes to personnel.

And I think the hiring of Irleand will help our scouting .

There are two GMs here Loomis - contracts and PR, Ireleand - talent evaluator don't let his Head of Scouting title fool you
