Colts waive LB Bjoern Werner after 3 unproductive seasons

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indianapolis Colts have waived outside linebacker Bjoern Werner less than three years after drafting him in the first round.
The Colts cut Werner on Tuesday, one day before the start of the new league year. Werner had just 6 1/2 sacks in 38 games since being drafted 24th overall by Indianapolis in 2013.

After starting 15 games in 2014, Werner barely played last season. He got just 150 defensive snaps in 10 games, making 11 tackles and no sacks on a defense desperate for a pass rusher.

Werner is one of two recent wasted first-round picks for Indianapolis. The Colts also traded their 2014 first-rounder to Cleveland for Trent Richardson, who was cut after less than two full seasons in Indianapolis.

Were did this all go wrong? 34 OLB? colts tried to make him into something he was not. what he is a square peg stuffed into a round hole. He was a strong-side 43 DE and still is IMO.

Talk about a must call to check out the tires. sign on the cheap loaded with incentives if all looks good.

I was thinking about this earlier. I remember thinking that was a terrible draft pick at the time because he was such a poor fit for a 3-4 defense. I'd certainly kick the tires. He and Edebali are supposedly friends from their time in Germany.

I would take him in a heart beat. The talent is all there and I think he has the potential to be really really good.

We do pretty well with retreads. If he truly was miscast in a 3-4 and we are going to run a 4-3 then I'd be fine with at least bringing him in for a look. Make it an incentive laden contract. Sure. Why not?

We do pretty well with offensive retreads. We should pick him up so he stays poorly coached for a while longer....

When I think of a retread I consider it someone who has succeeded at some point, who is either past his prime, or who has had injuries. I'm ok with giving those kind of players cheap deals to see what they have. I'm just not interested in a guy who has been almost non existent since coming into the league. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt anything to pick him up, because he should be plenty cheap. I'm simply not interested, and kind of hope the Saints aren't either.

There has been a lot of those "bust" high round picks that was resurrected their careers after a change of scenery. If we wanted to kick the tires on some underachieving guys on some low risk vet minimum contracts, I'm all for it. What exactly would went have to lose? They'd be no different from any other camp bodies we brought in except you know there's a lot of raw talent there that could still be harnessed.
