Zach Strief tells WWL radio, 'I'll be able to start until somebody beats me out'

1 Attachment(s)
Among the different topics he discussed on a local radio show Thursday, New Orleans Saints right tackle Zach Strief said "I'll be able to start until somebody beats me out."

Strief also talked about what he thought the team might do in the draft, how they can become more competitive with the Carolina Panthers, and where quarterback Drew Brees is in his career. The comments came during the "Sportstalk" show on WWL Radio hosted by Bobby Hebert and Todd Menesses.

Hebert led off by asking Strief where he thought he was and whether he thought he would be starting a seventh consecutive season in the opener this September.

"We're in good shape at the tackle spot ... and I think Terron Armstead is the best tackle in the NFL right now," Strief said. "A healthy Terron Armstead is as elite as the league has seen in a good while – he wasn't real healthy last year. We have a ton of talent, including Andrus (peat), who is going to be a good player in this league."

Please no. Peat needs to start.

I know it's not the most popular with glaring defensive needs, but I wish the Saints would draft OT Stanley, leaving Peat where he is, and have Strief as the swing tackle. Then, defense, defense, defense, WR, K.

Hopefully someone is ready to step up and beat out Strief in camp. Insert Peat at RT & fingers crossed we draft a guard in mid rounds of the draft.

I thought Orakpo and JJ Watt were gonna kill Brees last season.

Well, he is correct in his statement. He will start until someone beats him out. Goes to show you our talent level/desire to be the best attitude at Tackle.

Maybe it will light some fires under some folks behinds.

This could be said of every player on the roster.

I would hope that we start drafting well enough for the younger guys to beat out all of the older guys.

I'd love for a QB to beat out Brees. It means we have another damn good QB on the roster.

I was watching JJ Watt high lights and his high light was embarrassing Zach Strief. Strief has to know he's in decline. But I like the fact that he's giving it the good fight. He'll probably be a fine backup for a couple of years.

i love Streif. Total class act and the definition of a team guy. Hes not as bad as people think. A lot of tackles get owned by JJ Watt and Arakpo. It would be different if he was getting beat by some scrubs game in and game out.

Giving up three sacks to a scrub named Jacquies Smith from the Buccaneers in week 2 was that turning point for me.

We can't just accept losses. I don't believe having a defense would have changed the outcome of that game. We can't just lay down on offense because Watt is just that good. If the pats can hang 35 on them then why can't we?

Re: Zach Strief tells WWL radio, 'I'll be able to start until somebody beats me out'

We can't accept losses, but you can't accept Strief not starting because he gave up a sack or two...

If Peat is better than he will be starting soon enough, but he has to prove that he can beat Strief out and not just handed the spot...

Competition is a win/win all around, each pushing each other to be the best they can be...

Exactly. The coaches know a lot more about whos ready and whose not than we do. They wouldnt be playing Streif if anyone else could beat him out. I think its good that they arent forcing Peat to play before he is ready instead of just putting him in because he was a first round pick. Some organizations would have done that.

Strief was our 4th highest ranked offensive player on the team, behind only Armstead, Brees and Hightower (who only played a few games) and the 8th highest rated player on the entire team.

He's nowhere near as bad as some of you claim.

that's twice in two years where Strief got beat to the edge and almost got Brees seriously injured, thanks to him Brees missed the Panthers game this year. I'm really hoping someone beats him out this year before Brees takes a hit that puts him out for multiple games

That video is one snap out of 1,096 snaps he took at RT. Every LT in the NFL has bad games. Did you watch the Superbowl?

Do you think 2 bad games should overshadow the other 14?

As far as last year goes, if you didn't like Strief at RT, you damn sure wouldn't have liked the alternative.

Peat isn't good enough to start yet. Then why were people singing his praises last year?

I think people here want us to lose they keep accepting old and not wanting to embrace the new.

Losing to the texans pissed me off. I hated that loss and believed we could have scored in that game.

Its not 2 bad games, he's had two seasons of bad games. Most of pressure comes from the right side, Evans is gone but Strief should of been right behind him

The Panthers OTs had to deal with Von Miller, DeMarcus Ware and a very good Denver defense. Strief got torched by some back up on the Buccs and almost had Brees out for the season

Miami, NE, KC, Atl, Ind, Buffalo all moved the ball at will against them scoring 24+points each. KC did not even have a defensive TD either. Freeman ran all over them. Houston's late run was due to the schedule against weak division rivals. Jacksonville got blown out by even us, Tennessee was bad, Indy was bad. Then they play KC again who has 30 points at halftime. And Atlanta's oline was worse than ours so don't bring up the guard situation keeping Ingram from running the ball.

We scored six, SIX, points against them. How was we supposed to win that game?

And considering Carolina had better success against Watt I can only imagine how we will do against Denver's defense next year given how we did against Watt. Denver's defense is better than Houston's because they have more than one player.

No he hasn't. He's had a few bad games and no one has beaten him out. He's had way more good games than bad.

Its going to get ugly quick if the Saints don't find someone to improve the offensive line. I'm shocked Brees has only missed one game the last two seasons with this offensive line

Drew is still one of the least sacked QB's in the league, just pay attention to his pocket awareness and elusiveness

The last two seasons we had a declining Evans, Lelito, Goodwin and Kelemente.

Strief was better than all of them.

Re: Zach Strief tells WWL radio, 'I'll be able to start until somebody beats me out'

I'm just saying, all I heard on this forum was Streif needs to go and should be a backup to Peat from a lot of posters. I heard Kelemente was bad a few times that may have hurt Streif's positioning but I don't recall him being defended at all after that situation. I had even thought Peat was playing RT in Streif's place some last year and him holding well.

WillSaints81 04-04-2016 11:13 PM

Re: Zach Strief tells WWL radio, 'I'll be able to start until somebody beats me out'

Well the talk about Streif just basically reinforced that we DO need a receiver. Read what Elijah S Williams posted on SR(this may also be Football CEO? with those video blogs?)

.................................................................................
The RT position for us has always had someone with Length/Big Body. Not the greatest athlete and never asking them to play like an elite pass protecting RT. We need a big guy that is Smart and can protect to the inside and then use their length to push anybody that gets past them off their rush path.

The main reason it appears Peat wasn't a factor last year seems to have had very little to do with ability and everything to do with knowledge. More than once in reference to Peat it was mentioned that the best way to teach a tackle the position is to start him inside at Guard. They learn the protections and what the guys on the inside of them are doing much better which makes it easier to play Tackle in the long run.

Strief on the other Hand got beat for some memorable plays (namely the Brees hit) but wasn't NEARLY as bad as the #'s suggest. Now could he be upgraded (YES) and in due time he will be however his edge over Peat is still in his knowledge of the game.

Now one could argue on the hit that injured Brees 2 things. A Brees should have let the ball out earlier and B he possibly could have gotten the ball out earlier if our WR's were getting open or could be trusted to get their hands on the ball.

Now we've seen Drew as well as McCown throw picks trying to toss one up to Brandin Cooks so that he can make a play. Fact of the matter is...he's not that guy and won't win many jump ball opportunities. He needs a compliment badly. Anyhow back to my point. You can upgrade Drews receiving options, and get better play from your RG position (Lelito is probably not far off from where Evans was...may be better) to assist with getting the ball out quicker and giving Drew more room to step up to avoid that pressure.

Fact is Jahri was in the backfield a lot last year and this does nothing to aid your Tackle so that he can focus using technique to fan a guy out wide.

Give Peat another year to play LG while Moving Lelito to RG (cant be worse than Jahri) and adding some competition via a draft pick. Your getting a minor upgrade on the interior at worst(because you know Peat will improve and Lelito or a rookie can't be much worse than Jahri was ). We've added the TE from the Colts who should give us a little bit more than Watson and closer to what Graham gave us as a solid Go To Option. With that being said the last piece IMHO would be to add a WR that can win 50/50 balls opposite Cooks. You can kind of just toss it up to him and let him nab the pass and have confident that he'll get his hands on it OR stop the defender from getting an INT.

Toss in a draft pick like Treadwell at WR and an OG like a Joe Dahl/Connor McGovern and it should immediately upgrade the offense to go along with guys getting better from the year before.

Rest of the picks you can use to go after Defense. The most important pieces in a 4-3 over are the MLB/3Tech/5Tech position. The Jack is afforded very good matchups and is only asked to do one thing......rush the passer. We've got our MLB(Laurinitis) and we've got our 5tech(Jordan) and we've Quasi got a 3tech in Fairley but he needs to be supplemented quickly as he's on a 1 year deal and is even less of a Guarantee than Laurinitis is. At least if something happens to Laurinitis Anthony is there to fill in. Should something happen to Fairley...we'll were back where we were last year as far as base passrush.

Treadwell/Vernon Butler would be ideal picks in both situations. You get one of the more important positions of the Dscheme locked up and then you get a Colston replacement. **think about the fact that we got Toon in the 4th because we knew the Day that Colston would move on was coming. We attempted to Groom Toon all those years and had he stayed on the team we would have been resigning him this year to his 2nd contract and as a legit Colston replacement. It didn't happen and now we have to go into this draft looking to fill it as Coleman is not that guy. He's got the size but his rail thin body does not make him an ideal slot option and his more outside receiver only and he was used in that capacity last year.

I want to do a write-up on Treadwell but I watched his FB game against Florida and it told me all i needed to know about him as a prospect. I Then went back and watched his other games but the Florida game was Ideal.

People harp on how the Gators decided not to put Hargreaves on him and instead used their 2nd best CB and a Safety over the top to play him. Truth is plenty of #1 WR's are afforded this treatment and isn't an uncommon tactic. Not to mention Hargreaves would have gotten bodied 1 on 1 no safety help. He was open quite a few times for TD's and possibly long gainers on slants/crossers where he beat his man off the line. Only problem is QB didn't see him SEVERAL times.

Treadwell has quick feet/burst off the snap. He rarely loses to press coverage and if we wanted him to play opposite cooks he'd have to do that. He may not have 4.3 speed but his ability to win off the line and his burst means that If a guy whiffs on the Jam (which he's already slow so this is going to be a tactic teams will use to slow him down more) he will get behind them QUICKLY to which his catch radius means you can loft the ball over the CB in front of the S and he's coming down with it(alabama game he got behind a CB that ran a 4.4 for an easy catch because the DB whiffed early). He's also very very competitive which can be a slight negative but he keeps it under control more than OBJ does. He also lets his blocking do the talking as he'll light guys up ALL GAME. Yet he isn't a whiner so he'll get lit up by a defender and then get back up. I've seen him take several big hits via safeties or guys just blind side blocking him and he pops RIGHT UP. Theres no quit in his game but he plays every down with the same energy.

The main negative and it happened in the Florida game is that because he wasn't targeted a lot he got out of rhythm in the game thus dropping a pass or two that did come to him later in the game. Yet he wasn't targeted a lot not because he wasn't winning but because of Shoddy QB play. With a good right handed QB and playing the Z position in this offense he'd be the #1 option on a lot of plays and I don't doubt his ability to win EARLY would see him come down with a lot of balls.

Oh the other note I have on Treadwell is it appears that Ole Miss offense did not huddle and he instead got the routes he was supposed to run from the sideline. THIS could definitely hinder his abilty to learn the offense because you don't know how he will adapt to being in the huddle and if his ability to learn the offense/spit out the calls and get lined up (something that was toons problem)

Spence seems more like a secondary pick should Treadwell not be there but thinking about how Loomis said "were going to focus on defense but not ignore offense" has me thinking we made those moves in FA to free us up to get Treadwell because the Offense is still the core of this team and when we were a very good offense we had a lot of talent at the WR position. Even though we make it seem like Drew can turn water into wine, and he probably can, I'm sure it helps with the taste if the water is Triple distilled.

.......................................................................................

So what can we say with that? He just said our guards are taking time to gel with Lelito and Kelemente and that they need to learn more. He also just said we need a jumpball receiver that can make plays and shut down ints. And he said that the saints have gone more into a WC offensive approach where they are relying on someone who can jump up and grab the ball and speed is just a bonus.
