This kept me up all night last night and am even thinking of it this morning

And this is about Payton.

While yes I agree we would not be as good without him, we also have to appreciate the Payton we have to have him or else, which imo is one who is keeping the own fans in the dark. And that sucks.

Last night I ask myself are we contending this year or next year? What is Payton's plan? Payton has not said we would contend next year, which leads me to believe we aren't. At least that's not what I hope.

There was something else that I was thinking about and this one was the one that made way too much sense. Sean basically called a bunch of vanilla plays last year despite them never paying off(screens). I believe Payton wanted the players to play hard with what they got. He was testing the players ability to want to win. However, Payton probably believed last year wasn't a contending year and he did not want us to know.

And here comes the big one......Goodell. Payton has a axe to grind with Goodell for his suspension. Payton is obviously planning something big and we the fans are being kept in the dark. My guess is opposing teams' coaches reading these forums. This plan may not be ready next year, it may be in 2017. Which is why I now wonder people like Hagan and KMajor were on to something. That we were not going to be a major contender until 2017.

Payton plans to shock the NFL in a major way in what I am believing is making Goodell look bad. The move for Hoomanawanui last year was a plan not for last year but for this year or perhaps next year. He is waiting for the defense to show their hand. I am believing that the vanilla plays last year was because Payton does not want to show good things in a half effort. My guess is also the FO purposely let Watson walk away. The calling with Stanford people was enough to make me believe that the plan for Fleener was prior to Watson leaving. Or the saints knew way ahead, that he was going to want more money. So maybe Snead and Coleman are not actually needed to do more than what they did because the saints didn't play their best hand with Cooks and Watson last year. But Payton just may not call these plays next year if the defense does not get turnovers. He is waiting for the defense to be the way he wants and then he will call his new plays. Basically be a good dog and you get a treat. In way it's like Heaven, where all your suffering will be rewarding and your hard work will be rewarded. Payton will not release his new wrinkles and goodies until the defense is what it is.

Do you like this kind of Payton?

Its your choice if you don't want to believe it but it's like this serious version of Payton to not play his hand unless everything is going right. That's not farfetched.

Idk. You're saying he didn't try to lose last year, but he didn't try his best to win either. I guess anything is possible, but I think he'd want to put the best team on the field as possible.

Thinking about this will most def keep me up ... So how does this screw with Goodell? This exterestrial existential thought process at it best

I just think SP is waiting for the perfect time to unleash this team he wants. And I do think he's not over that suspension. I think Brees knows about this too.

Just remember what our records were in In 07 and 08, then we won the whole thing in 09.

No one saw us coming... Just like this year.

The fact you allow something like this to keep you awake at night is troubling. What keeps me up at night is the circus and goat hump we call the presidential election 2016......who knows? You may have something, there may be water on Mars, but to lose some rest, nah, hopefully there's not much in it.

There is water on Mars...

Also, I find the election keeping you up at night to be just as silly...

Chances are your life isn't going to change at all regardless of who wins. People get to involved on presidential elections when the elections that really matter are for your local officials that control zoning, ordinances and other taxation issues. Even state elections are far more impactful than the presidential election.

My man, that hurt my brain reading that. Listen, I can see why you think Payton let off a bit as far as tempo is concerned, but the defense dictates the offensive plays. If we go down by 14 points, we have to change the play calling. The defensive suckage kills our opportunity to have a consistent running game and control the clock.

If this is the kind of thing that keeps you up nights you are one lucky individual.
I would relax and enjoy not having real worries to keep you up at night.

I'm not trying to be disrespectful to the OP, but I really think this post is nonsense! Although some of you may not agree with me, SP plays to win every game. I've never seen him hold back. Plus have you ever seen Drew Brees give up? Never! They don't care how far behind they are. They're always fighting. It's the defensive side of the ball that has let us down and that has given up and some games. But that's not holding back, that's just terrible defense. Add to the fact that our window is closing with Drew Brees, there's no way that Peyton would hold anything back. He's in a win-now situation and he knows it

I think OP is overthinking it and I don't think Sean is holding back. This is a win-now league, that would be really stupid. Perhaps Sean hit a creative slump or has been distracted. Hope this year he gets that spark back or he could lose this team - figuratively and/or literally.

Re: This kept me up all night last night and am even thinking of it this morning

I've criticized Payton's redundant play calling over the last couple of years, but to suggest that he's basically sandbagging is.... less than credible.

If he wants to get back at Goodell (who doesn't?) then wouldn't he want to win even more? In what way does holding back now, to win later, help? That doesn't make him look good. So it makes no sense, period.

I never said he did not play to win. Just that he might have made it harder. He wanted the players to play hard. I remember last offseason it seemed the motto was for the receivers to fight for the ball. That certainly was a test this year and a good bit of it failed.

no offense, but this is absurd. there is not a coach in the nfl that says lets make it harder to win. it is hard enough.

Payton sandbag?!? No way?!? Could have done it the past two seasons and really secured a better slot in the draft?!?

Now he'll play ya some mean possum, but never sandbag...

The Saints from last year couldve snuck into the playoffs if a handful of plays went the other way. I know Payton tried to win at least early in the season.

Re: This kept me up all night last night and am even thinking of it this morning

There were some dumb decisions. He let the league intimidate him with the xp rule. Going for two after TD against the bucs instead of just kicking the xp because one was missed but it was okay if we decided to kick a FG instead of going for it. We were needing a TD instead of a FG when it could have been the other way around.
