So if Lelito and Kelemete/Streif end up starting

What will be done about the running game?

ChrisXVI 05-01-2016 03:30 PM

Re: So if Lelito and Kelemete/Streif end up starting

At the moment I'm expecting this to be our starting O-Line:

LT- Armstead
LG- Kelemete
C- Unger
RG- Lelito
RT- Strief

Lelito is much better at right guard than left and Kelemete actually performed admirably when he had to play left tackle last season so I think he's earned a shot at left guard. I don't see Peat beating out Strief or anyone else yet. The UDFA's will be great depth with chances of starting in '17.

If it does turn out like this what concerns would you have?

IF........"If's and but's were candy and nuts........" There should be a "What If?" section.

Ingram on first downs again. And the screens. I hope the saints don't run those next year as much.

Re: So if Lelito and Kelemete/Streif end up starting

Hightower, however, showed that he could play with the guards we have. He was running all over the place those last two games. It explains the Lasco pick also. We've had more success running the ball with undervalued guys.

Re: So if Lelito and Kelemete/Streif end up starting

I expect it to be this:

LT- Armstead/Peat
LG- Allen/Peat/Klemente
C- Unger/Allen/Lelito
RG- Turner/Young/Lelito
RT- Strief/Ryker/Cheek

Peat may beat out Allen at Left Guard which would put Allen at Right Guard and Turner. With this scenario we have Turner, Klemente, Lelito, Ryker, Young and Cheek as solid backups. Our running game will be fine and with a good rotation to keep everyone fresh the passing game will be great!

If the Oline stays as you called it, I'd expect the run game to struggle and Brees to miss at least a couple games due to injury

Re: So if Lelito and Kelemete/Streif end up starting

I'd expect its because they earned it, and perhaps both OG's actually improved their game over the off-season

Why do you desperately keep looking for negatives?

Regardless of who plays what position on the O-line - they need to get Peat on that starting line-up.

1st round pick can't spend time on the bench as a depth guy.

I agree the apprenticeship is over. I hope Strief sees a lot time at guard until we figure out the long-term answer. Certainly a lot of potential with young players in that slot

Re: So if Lelito and Kelemete/Streif end up starting

Brees still has a quick release which makes the OL look better. The infusion of talent even as UDFA ought to give us enough depth.

Strief would not make a good guard. Do you see that guy pulling and lumbering around?

For four years he was a tackle -eligible for 4-5 plays a game and played special teams, so yes

The defense is going to have to improve and Grayson better be prepared to play. :)

Right, but he'll be 33 at the start of the season and can't handle a speed rusher to save his life anymore. I don't want that guy out in the open blocking on screens.

Re: So if Lelito and Kelemete/Streif end up starting

Armstead, Peat, Unger, Lelito, Strief.

Turner just doesn't seem athletic enough to me. On a running team, he could make it. There's just no way he can pass block 40+ times a game. Young may be the wildcard there. If he can lock down a guard spot, Peat may be at RT and Strief may be the next man up at both tackle spots as well as tackle eligible again.

You forgot Young and Ryker. I think both have a chance at guard.

Good Lord if we have 2 UDFA's starting Drew will be retiring half way through the season.

Where do you see Streif improving? That's what this is about. Peat will be starting and so will Lelito. I expect Kelemete to be the odd one out if Streif holds onto his RT job. If Peat is RT, Kelemete better improve from last year.

Re: So if Lelito and Kelemete/Streif end up starting

If Peat doesn't start next year, I will be highly disappointed. 13 overall pick and to be regulated to the bench. It doesn't bother me where he starts. Guard or tackle as long as he is in the lineup. Wasted draft pick if he isnt.

Bears part ways with Matt Slauson, too | ProFootballTalk

Worth a look? In my opinion Matt is still a solid player.

All I know is the best 5 will be on the field.
They won't be any worse than last year so the offense should be just fine.

Could you imagine those 2 bookends for the next 8 years? Brees would of played until 46!

I would. You have no clue what their thought process involves. They all put so much research into these players, especially first rounders, that they probably know the maiden name of the player's first girlfriend's mother. They know about the time he and his buddies skipped school in the eighth grade and shared one of their father's bottle of rock gut vodka.

Payton made a commitment last year to target high moral quality, hard working individuals. Your personal pool of players includes players that were not even being considered by the Saints and for reasons that you would have little to no chance of knowing about.

I loved the fact that Rankins declined the offer to come to Chicago for the draft, preferring instead to spend it at his brother's house with his elderly grandparents who would not have been able to travel to Chicago. And then there were the majority of the twenty some prospects that showed up in Chicago decked out looking like frickin' pimps. Oh, there were a few that showed up not dressed like clowns, and to a man they all are known as being hark working and serious about the game.

I wouldn't be surprised if Landon Turner challenges Lelito for the starting spot at some point in the season.

I stick with my statement based on the saints track record and yes I have a very good idea what they do in the draft process.

I wouldn't be shocked to see Peat starting at RT and Turner and Allen work themselves into the Guard rotation as the season takes its course.

Don't sleep on Strief. He's one of the better RT's in the NFL, even at his age.

If they want his job, they better bring their A-game.
