De'vante Harris - UDFA

Just been checking out the UDFA's we picked up and started watching highlights of De'vante Harris from Texam A&M.

Check out these highlights and notice a couple of things;

The fact that he completely shut down Odell Beckham Jr.
His very impressive closing speed when the ball is in the air
He also isn't afraid to tackle and has good hands.

Don't sleep on this signing, he could become pretty decent

this kid can play

De'vante Harris CB Texam A&M 5105 176 4.48

5'10" with 30 5/8 arms hurt his draft stock. 32" arms would have got him drafted. on the plus side he did jump out the building at the combine. 38.5" vertical. Does need some coaching in tackling skills but he is not afraid to stick his helmet in there.

Key words for him Intelligent and Instinctive

We could use another body at the CB position in case last years draftees don't work out.

Re: De'vante Harris - UDFA

PFF listed him in their list of Top 15 UDFAs

"3. De’Vante Harris, CB, Texas A&M: New Orleans Saints
For whatever reasons, De’Vante Harrisn never had any draft stock throughout the entire process, but his tape is pretty special and we had him ranked at No. 69 on our draft board. We talked about him at length on the podcast, but the bottom line is he has some of the slickest movement skills and break on the ball of anybody in this draft class. He allowed just 275 receiving yards and one touchdown this past season and even impressed the year before against Amari Cooper. He doesn’t fit the ideal size profile the NFL covets, and he uses an unusual technique in his coverage, but if a team embraces that and just lets him play, he could be a steal for the Saints in the secondary."

He must excel on special teams to have any shot at a roster spot for 2016 in New Orleans.

I'm thinking practice squad at best. He'll have to beat out 5 guys for a roster spot.

Lewis
Breaux
Swann
Wilson
PJWilliams
Brian Dixon
Brandon Dixon
Ken Crawley

Another player not taken because of his size. Drew Brees anyone?

He's bounds better than jalen mills and he was a draft pick barely

I think it's very difficult to be worse than Brian Dixon, I'd rather have Jason David than Dixon, at least David got some picks as well as getting beat.

Harris may be a practice squad player, but I think he shows more promise than atleast 3 guys on that list.

Swan is one more tap on his noggin away from retirement. The bottom 4 are no more accomplished than any other rookie, so he stands a good chance.

True football player. The type of guy you want and need on your roster. Size has never determined greatness at the CB position.

Totally disagree Dizz, Dixon is a quality reserve cornerback for us; Jason David was just plain awful...

De'vante Harris signing, his size and alma mater (5' 10", 176 lbs) has Defensive Backs Coach Aaron Glenn (5' 9", 183 lbs, Texas A & M) all over it...

Yet another indicator the Saints select draft picks from their own insider network and rarely get out and scout a player...

I think "quality" may be a little too much credit for him, whenever he's been on the field I've only ever seen him get beat.

Agreed that Jason David was terrible and got beat often, but he did notch 6 interceptions in 2008 so in my opinion he's still better than Dixon.

Dixon to me is the Travaris Cadet of the defense, gets all the chances in the world even though he's very average.

Lewis
Breaux
Swann
Wilson
PJWilliams
Brian Dixon
Brandon Dixon
Ken Crawley

Jairus Byrd
Kenny Vaccaro
Jamarca Sanford
Alden Darby,
Vonn Bell

I look at the list 13 and still hold the belief depth at both Safety and CB position should be filled heavily with Hybrids. I have been sold on this idea for a few years now. Unless your really good at either CB or S you need to be a solid all around DB in todays pass happy NFL

Re: De'vante Harris - UDFA

We were rated as having the #1 undrafted free agent classes:

Top seven undrafted free-agent classes following 2016 NFL Draft - NFL.com

Quote:

1. New Orleans Saints

Sean Payton had only five draft picks to work with this year, so a strong UDFA class was a must. The Saints found two potential starters in guards Landon Turner and Avery Young (who could end up at tackle eventually). Offensive tackle Ryker Mathews and centers Jack Allen and Marcus Henry also have NFL futures. Getting receiver Michael Thomas in the second round was a steal, and either Jordan Williams (tough possession receiver) or Jared Dangerfield (taller downfield threat) could make the roster. Depth was needed at defensive back, so picking up De'Vante Harris, Ken Crawley, Trae Elston and Michael Caputo was a haul. Although D.J. Pettway didn't play much at Alabama, his skill set is worth a look.

Perhaps, but last year Wilson proved he was pretty good in the slot.

And Swann is a playmaker. Obviously the concussions scare everyone.

The Dixon brothers are pretty good special teams players.

If he makes the team, thats great. But he's gonna have to earn it obviously. I'd say right now he looks like a prime PS player unless he plays lights out in camp and pre-season

We usually only keep 10 db's, and 5 will be safeties. Maybe with Bush and Sunseri gone we only keep 4 safeties and 6 CB's. But with so many 3 safety sets I'll bet we keep 5 safeties.

Byrd, Bell, Vaccaro, , Sanford, Harris and a few UDFA prospects may push Sanford.

Are there any 5-11, 176 pound CB's in the NFL that run a 4.48?

Would he be the smallest CB, also with short arms, in the entire league?

I love me some underdogs but wow, thats small. Sounds strictly like a cover-2 guy at best.

I don't think he has to be tall, adding a few pounds maybe but if he is pesky as hell I could go with that. I think he should be fine.

The best cover guy on our block was the smallest kid on our block. Ya never know.

Jabari Greer was 5-11, 180 lbs so it's certainly do-able.

The top 5 are pretty solid unless someone gets hurt.

Even then we might be looking at 4 CBs on game day if we start running more 3 Safety sets.
