Our defense looks like a mid-tier unit right now. If we catch a few breaks we could finish in the teens.

I'm glad they have gone out and specifically tried to upgrade the front 7, particular interior D line and outside linebacker

4 new players I'm excited to see this season

Vonn Bell

Just need to wait for preseason to see how the injury report shakes out.

Browner being gone should count for at least 1 maybe 2 more wins alone

I think it's really pretty simple, can this group create turnovers or not. Historically, Sean Payton's defenses is usually some version of a bend but don't break trying to set up for the big turnover. If this group of guys can stop opposing offenses a few times per game, then we may be looking at 9 to 10 wins and a possible playoff spot. If this group of guys can create turnovers then we are looking at completing for a division title and maybe a first round bye.

Key addition
Dennis Allen

Key losses
Rob Ryan

This move alone fills me with hope. It gives every player on defense a free pass and breath of fresh air after the many years of stupidity we all suffered through.

Re: 5 Reasons Why Saints Defense Will Be Better in 2016

We'll have a better season for 3 reasons:

1.) More talent on the defensive side of the ball. Last year the only proven commodities were Keenan Lewis and Cameron Jordan. Now we have Laurenitis, Anthony, Fairley, Robertson and Breaux that we know can produce. On hustle alone this team defense will be no lower than 20th.

2.) More overall depth. If Keenan goes down(which I do not want to happen) we have PJ Williams, Kyle Wilson and Damian Swann who can step in. We have more defensive linemen who can rotate in to keep players fresh and our talent at Linebacker is Infinitely Better.

3.) We have talented young studs who are rookies and 2nd year players in Rankins, Bell, Kikaha, Tull, Williams and Swann. Plus we have Michael Thomas on offense to complete our missing piece: A big receiver to make the tough catch. Remember the 1st Carolina game we had Carolina beat but Josh Norman outjumped Brandon Cooks for the ball. This year that doesn't happen. This year Michael Thomas highpoints the ball and comes down with it. TD Saints!! Ball Game over!!

I don't get all the love for Allen. DB coach when we won the SB then left for a DC job in Denver and didn't do to well there, then was a HC at Oakland and got run out there. He was co-DC with Rob and ended up as DC here last season, now he has a co-DC to share with this season. Very unproven, more hype in my opionion. Guess we'll see. Getting us in the 25 range want get it.

He did fine in Denver with what he had. Its what got him the head coach job in Oakland.

He was too young to make those jumps so suddenly, but he made those jumps for a reason. He's HC material and everyone knows it. He was just thrown into it a bit too soon.

He's probably exactly where he needs to be right now. A DC for a few more years then maybe a HC.

I think he will be the guy who takes over for Sean when Sean retires.

I wouldn't say "didn't do to well there." Because of that defense Denver went to the playoffs and because of that defense they won a playoff game. That was the season they had Tebow at QB. So Dennis Allen isn't as bad as your making him out to be. He might not be Buddy Ryan but he's not Rob Ryan either.

Lets just see how he does as the Saints DC before he's the Saints HC. Maybe he proves me wrong, but maybe he proves me right. We'll see!!

Addition by subtraction. The defense will get better because Ryan is gone.

Add Browner to that list and you see what he means...

SFIAH

Re: 5 Reasons Why Saints Defense Will Be Better in 2016

Seriously speaking, rotation should be HUGE. Keep those BIG GUYS in the trenches FRESH. This is what I'd like to see...

1st and 2nd downs :
Rankins/St. Nick
Cam Jordan
John Jenkins
David Oyemata/Bobby Richardson

On 3rd down ...
Add Kikaha / Tull & rotate JJenkins out.

Keep your eye on Oyemata at camp. This guy has the potential to be very disruptive.

Love the idea of that! Our D line as a whole could be one of our strengths!

All of this would be great but it will be all for naught if our offense somehow manages to take a step back. Its going to take our offense staying in the top 5 along with a signifigent improvement on defense to be a real threat.

WillSaints81 05-11-2016 03:39 PM

Re: 5 Reasons Why Saints Defense Will Be Better in 2016

Again, Allen did not really show the improvement after Ryan left enough. That could be in part due to a inefficient offense in the first half.

I say move training camp from paradise back to Houma or to Hammond like it was during the Dome patrol era, and electrify the metal bench on the sidelines. That will force everyone onto a training bike.... CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He did 1 huge thing that made the difference. in game adjustments. something Rob never did.

It may just be my B&G goggles, but I thought they looked better when Allen took over. More active, more speed, more reactive, more aggressive, even with an injury depleted unit.

We'll see what happens when he has an entire off-season to install his defense.

I agree they looked better

The jags had a top 10 offense and we forced 3 turnovers
When we played the falcons we didn't allow a single second half point.

However, when we played the Panthers the second time we were up by two scores, as soon as Delvin Breaux went down the Panthers didn't punt for the rest of the game.

They showed progress as the season wore on, having browner playing at CB did not help matters, Mr "Allow a first down."

could care less what he did as the hc of a team. there are many guys that are good d coords and not good head coaches. Also, I think he did really well in denver considering the frigan offense they have. they wont a playoff game with teabag, are you kidding me?
