Tom Condon: Saints seem satisfied with Drew Brees’ cap number

1 Attachment(s)
There’s been a lot of talk about the Saints and quarterback Drew Brees coming to terms on an extension this offseason that would both keep him in New Orleans and lower his $30 million cap hit for the 2016 season.

Brees said late last month that he’s confident a deal will get done, but also said that he’s comfortable playing out the final year of his deal in the event it doesn’t happen. During an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show Wednesday, Brees’ agent Tom Condon said his impression is that the Saints feel the same way about letting things ride.

“At one point, New Orleans wanted to talk about a cap re-do, and Drew was more than happy to do that,” Condon said, via the New Orleans Advocate. “There were some intervening situations that occurred, so they didn’t need the cap room, and they seem to be satisfied with carrying that number right now.”

I'm fine with him playing his contract out if we don't need the room. Our cap number is going to be beautiful next year. We'll be like Jacksonville in free agency.

I'd rather Drew not hit free agency whilst he's still playing at an elite level.

If we don't extend him then I have no idea what we should do. Do we give a 38 year old Brees a 4 year/$88 million deal with $60 mil guaranteed or do we move on?

Its typical posturing. I feel a deal will get done.

Please don't believe anything Tom Condon says. He's a liar.

This should be a win/win. I have no clue why they have not worked something out. The Saints get a top QB and will have the cap room to pay him top money. Drew gets to finish his career with a team where he should break all records. I could understand the hold up before the draft but not now.

In a heart beat. Front load the contract where he makes 60 of the 80 million in the first 2 years. Should be easy seeing our cap room will be 50+ million next year.

Not only am I tied of hearing about the "Drew Brees" greedy controversy, I'm also tired of our team being cap strapped for the past 5 seasons, going into our 6th. So I hope it gets resolved one way or another so we can get on with our fan-base lives.

I'm all for not kicking a lot of money on future cap years.

It's not really kicking the can down the road in this case. We will see a ton of cap relief next year. Paying Drew 20 million net year and 30 over the following 3 wont matter. It's about just getting the deal done at this point.

The 2017 free agent list is stacked.

Or maybe that 3rd round pick last season is living up to Paytons liking.I would be careful paying a big contract to an aging qb.

It doesn't seem like getting him his money and not breaking the bank again should be that difficult.
Quarterback Contracts and Salaries | Over The Cap

the problem is that Brees and Condon aren't going to budge on whatever their # is, so the Saints are going to either pay it or move on. Brees and TC know this is his last deal, so 4 years $100m is not out of the question

I would be ok with 25 million a year. But I would like to see a 3 yr., 75 million. His contract would be up when he is 41. All records would belong to him if he stays healthy. Remember, we will have 31 million in cap relief next year even if Brees stays at 30 million a year.

I'd have more faith and confidence in the Payton offensive system than I do in an aging Brees...

Wouldn't pay more than 20 per...

Breaking all the passing records is nice for, him, but, what does it do for our Lombardi count?

Great point. I've often wondered how much of Brees' success is due to Sean Payton and converseley how much of our offensive success is because Sean has Brees as his QB.

Obviously the answer is a ratio of both, but throughout Sean's coaching career he's made every QB he's ever coached look good.

Could Sean take another "good" young ascending QB and turn him into a "great" one like he did with Brees?

I'm kinda excited about seeing that happen, although kinda scared that it won't.

Thoughts?

They'll slap that franchise tag on Andrew Luck.

He's going no where.

what does this tell me? we have nothing and I mean absolutely nothing riding the pine. If he does hit FA how do you think Roger will screw us out of a comp pick then?

If he recovers from injuries last season and sustains through this season, I'd give two No. 1's for Andrew Luck next year, and...

...take a 3rd round pick if Brees signs elsewhere...

Assuming, of course, that you were a real GM and didn't just play one on the world wide web.

Drew is better than Luck and will be over the next 3 or 4 years. Keep Drew if at all possible. Give the man his 25 million a yr.

Re: Tom Condon: Saints seem satisfied with Drew Brees’ cap number

If we lose Drew in free agency next year does that mean we get a comp pick?

I believe that Colston was a 7th round comp pick.iirc We don't get too many of them thanks to the way Mickeys system works.

Don't get me wrong In my heart I believe Drew will retire a Saint........and Tom Condon will pocket some nice change. But this franchise lives and breathes by Drew Brees and Sean Payton won't let Drew leave New Orleans. It truly is a win/win to sign a reasonable(ish) contract.

in the Nfl today teams can't afford to have anybody ride the pine, and our cap situation for the past 2 years guarantees that we wouldn't have anybody.

I think we have a plan for Brees that only a few know about. But if not, we do then have another 30 million next year that we don't have now.

Don't know which FA list you are looking at but there is only 3 QB's I would want starting for the Saints and one is Drew.

This is the reason.

For Brees to retire a Saint, the team is going to have to commit a significant chunk to make it happen. Without Brees, the Saints are officially rebuilding and it may be 10 years to reclimb the mountain. With Brees, there is a chance in a shorter window, but it's going to cost.

Everyone seems to think this is an easy decision. Seems like there are blinders to the QB market in the NFL. The about proposed contract extension ($22 million a year, $60 million guaranteed) isn't even out of line. It's market value for a top 5 QB.
