PANCAKES: Saints Rookie’s Unique Ability Makes Him a Favorite at Guard Spot

When the Saints signed University of North Carolina Tarheels right guard Landon Turner in undrafted free agency after the conclusion of the 2016 NFL Draft two and a half weeks ago, they surely were aware of the 23-year old rookie’s ability to “pancake” opponents.
Wait a minute — do what??? The “pancake block” is a term that is used by offensive line coach and offensive linemen in football to describe a block that leaves a defensive player flat on his back as the running back goes through the hole. https://cdn.fansided.com/wp-content/...Turner-UNC.jpg The pancake block is a maneuver that isn’t very popular with most defensive football players. Defensive players hate the pancake bitterly, and will do almost anything within their power to avoid being on the receiving end of one of them. For the offensive linemen, however, the pancake block is the ultimate expression of blocking dominance. And it’s an expression that during his time on the Tarheel campus of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, that Landon Turner became synonymous with. read more |

I'm liking him more and more the more I learn about him. I won't be surprised at all if him and Allen make the final 53

I hope he is good enough to start. It would fill a need and add to what I think is going to be a great draft.

I know every one is head over heels with Landon but the kid needs a good bit of work. Avery Young is the same way
Ryker Mathews if he sticks could be the UDFA diamond we are looking for. |

Landon Turner fell for several reasons; and if you lack the footwork to pass block in the NFL - you're a novelty fullback that today's rosters can't afford... |

That cool and all if we're running the ball against Wake Forest, but can the dude pass block against Gerald McCoy or Kawaan Short? He's gonna need a little time to develop.

As soon as Carolina draft Starr and Short the interior of the OL jumped to the top of watch list for the saints. since that draft the saints have gotten worse at both OG positions. this is what i call playing games. 20 million dollar QB should get respect from the front office in the players they select. since the super bowl the saints have been playing games with oL and it has not worked. |

That is a massive man.
As with all rookies, there's some areas of concern. I'm pretty sure 1 of our UDFA OG's will make this team, and 1 or 2 will make the practice squad. Lelito is OK, and he's got another year under his belt. He's still an ascending player IMO. BTW: I think there's a reason why we have a new O-Line coach. Roushar is an upgrade. We might even see less zone blocking and more power. |
