Re: Saints are suffocating themselves by clinging to Drew Brees

Dumb dumb dumb. Brees is still our best player. He's the reason why we always have a chance to win in every game we play. We dont need a top 5 defense. If we have a top 16 D, we have a legiimate chance to win the whole thing.

He's acting as if players like Drew Brees come along every season, news flash - they don't.

If we get rid of Brees before the time is right it won't be our defense that's the problem.

Yeah lets not pay a legend of a QB to pay for a top defense and get a Dalton/Texan playig there, cause it worked wonders for them

Forget that. This is a highly inappropriate comment. :broccoli:

We offered Norman the same deal, and he opted for the dysfunctional Redskins. It wasn't money

He's right if this D don't get fixed.

The defense went from 31st to 4th in a year from 2012 to 2013. And honestly any team that can win 7 games with the historically worst defense doesn't really need the defense to get too much better to be successful.

30 million is a lot to play any player if the team finished at 7-9 for 2 years straight.
First off it isn't $30 million. Brees' salary this year is $20. Barely top 10 salary for QB's in today's NFL. The $30 million cap hit is because of the signing bonus from the 2012 extension along with the 2014 restructure.

It's foolish to think the Saints have not gotten every penny of the $100 million that was committed to Brees for his 5 year extension in 2012. Looking at the production and salaries of other NFL QBs, it's a flat bargain.

At 38 this would be the last season I would pay. I don't think to many teams if any sign him to a 4 year big money deal after this season.
I posit there are teams that would be willing to pay Brees $75 million all cash for 3 years.

But the problem falls squarely back on the Saints. The next QB will not be Drew Brees. Not even close. Not better than Drew Brees at 40, or 41 either.

So a decision has to be made. Try to reach the mountaintop again in a short window with Brees, or start over.

There's no replacement for Brees in free agency or on our roster. If there's something in free agency we really want Brees would restructure to make sure we could make it happen. When his contract is up, I'm perfectly fine with us resigning him for $20-22 million a year.
