Andrus Peat looks like a new man this offseason.

Peat, who will always be monstrous at 6-foot-7 and more than 300 pounds, is visibly leaner than he was as a rookie, carrying a burly NBA power forward’s torso atop his massive lower body.

By design, he hasn’t lost much weight, only a few pounds off of the roughly 320-pound frame he carried last season. Peat’s overall weight wasn’t the problem when the Saints opened training camp last August; the way that weight was distributed is what set him back. With that in mind, Peat spent the months after his rookie year working hard to turn fat into muscle.

“I really just focused on changing my body composition and kind of leaning up a little bit,” Peat said. “I’m feeling better, that’s the biggest thing. More energy in practice, I’m doing better in conditioning and those types of things. I’m still working at it.”

This is looking like one of the many underestimations by those predicting doom and gloom on the Saints upcoming season. How can a team that went 7-9 while losing a number of games it should have won be forecast as a 5-11 team when virtually every portion of the team's makeup has seen improvement in talent?

It's nothing against Strief, who has been a terrific boon for a seventh round pick, strong leader, enforcer in the locker room, and has played at an elite level for several years through great attitude and hard work...

But as high as Peat was selected in the first round, Andrus needs to step up and at least win the right tackle job, if not push to be the the top tackle on the team to warrant his selection...

Don't be so quick to judge Peat.

O lineman have longer careers than any other position.

He's clearly a long term option whether he starts at his future position game 1, game 8 or 2017...

Well, considering where he was selected, regardless of position, exception maybe being quarterback, a pick that high should be contributing immediately...

If RG is the best position then good deal. I'm good knowing the Saints may have an elite RG for the next 10 years. To me he didn't look quick enough for the LT or RT positions, maybe it was conditioning or maybe it was just being a rookie.

There is a good possibility Andrus plays guard again this year, however his future will be at RT.

That could even take place this year. Those that know far more than I do say that Peat does not have the body type to play guard, that he is too tall and lacking the low leverage or such. We had enough players playing out of position on defense last season and we all know how that turned out.

This is what happens when a kid can train for his job full-time. The fact that the Pac 12 is on that quarterly system, screwed him and The Saints last season. With the proper time to train, we could have conceivably won 10 games last year.

Quickness or quick feet are often thrown around as something that is really important for a tackle, and sure it helps, but its not everything you need. The most important part for a tackle, or any o-line player for that matter, is to understand the plays and their nuances. Angles, running lanes, where the ball will be, what the defender will see. By knowing that a good o-line player can put himself in a position to make great plays against somebody that is considered a much better athlete than himself.

Peat is a smart dude and it looks like he is working his tail off. I'd be really happy to see him either at RG or RT this year, it will mean he beat out some other guy to get the job and then we got the best guy on the field.

Peat is an OT, the only reason we're considering him at RG is because we don't have a RG worth a crap
