New Orleans Saints place safety Jamarca Sanford on injured reserve

The New Orleans Saints have placed veteran safety Jamarca Sanford on injured reserve and signed defensive tackle Lawrence Virgil in his place.

Sanford did not participate in minicamp with an undisclosed injury but was in attendance at practice every day watching from the sidelines.

Sanford has been with the Saints since 2014 and was re-signed as a free agent in the offseason.

Virgil, a 2014 undrafted rookie out of Valdosta State, initially made the team's practice squad and was promoted to the active roster for one game. He spent the 2015 season on IR.

Virgil was at Saints minicamp on a tryout basis last week.

I doubt he was going to see much playing time, except maybe on special teams.

Also explains why Roman Harper may have been re-signed

I added Trae Elston only because the more I read about him the more it looks like the only reason he's being doubted is because he's undersized. Yes, his 40 was bad at the combine, but he blazed a 4.46 at his pro-day. Thats damn fast for a safety.

I'll admit I'm no scout, but I'm a scout junkie. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he made it in this league.

Elston will be on the team. He has the versatility that the team now values.

We typically only carry 5 safeties so I imagine barring injury that'll be Byrd, Bell, Vacarro, Harris and Harper.
