Dennis Allen is unleashing the Defensive Line this season.

It was buried in another thread, but its a good read and deserves its own thread, especially since its the off-season.

Saints plan to unleash defensive line with simple concept change under Dennis Allen

Dennis Allen is unleashing the New Orleans defensive line this season.

By installing his personal variation of the attacking, aggressive scheme Gregg Williams deploys, Allen is also taking a lot of the guesswork out of the game for the guys up front.

From edge rushers like Cam Jordan and Kasim Edebali, all the way to John Jenkins and Tyeler Davison inside, Allen wants the Saints defensive linemen firing off the ball, aiming for penetration and wreaking havoc on opposing offensive lines.

“We don’t want to sit back, we don’t want to react to nothing, we want to dictate what’s going to happen,” Saints pass rush specialist Brian Young said. “So it starts with the front, so we’re going to get off and we’re going to get under their pads and we’re going to knock them back 3 yards and let the chips fall where they may.”

...
New Orleans often asked defensive linemen to “two-gap,” which requires a linemen to read the play and react, a technique that can keep blockers off of the linebackers but also forces a linemen to hesitate for a brief moment to make a play. Under Ryan, the Saints often tweaked the two-gap technique by asking certain defensive linemen to “shade” or line up on the shoulder of the offensive lineman instead of playing head-up, but the principle remained a part of the defense.

Now that Allen’s in full control of the defense, those days are over.

“We’re not going to be two-gapping anything,” Young said.

For that reason, deploying big, hulking players on the line is less important than it was in Ryan’s defense. New Orleans has a quartet of young pass rushers — Edebali, Obum Gwacham, Davis Tull and an injured Hau’oli Kikaha — who were often seen as ‘tweeners last season; Kikaha, Tull and even Edebali were asked to play linebacker at times.

Under Allen, all four are defensive ends.

“It used to be that way, with all the two-back runs and those kinds of things, your ends were a lot bigger, but nowadays. ... the game is much more spread out now and a lot faster,” Young said. “I don’t care about the weight as much as I care about: Can a guy set an edge, can he knock a block back? I don’t care if he’s 220 (pounds) or 280, if he can do those two things, it doesn’t matter.”:):):)

New Orleans also put a premium on finding interior players with the quickness to beat offensive lineman off the ball. First-round pick Sheldon Rankins was considered undersized by some analysts in the draft, but he’s an expert penetrator who has impressive explosion for a 300-pounder. Veteran Nick Fairley played at 280 pounds for Williams with the Rams last season, but he’s built his career around getting into the backfield, even when he was paired with Ndamukong Suh in Detroit or Aaron Donald in St. Louis.

For anybody who’s played under Williams, the Saints’ new direction on the defensive line feels eerily familiar.

“It’s still so familiar to the defense of Gregg Williams, so it’s nothing that I’m not comfortable with,” Jordan said. “I just have to reach back into the memory banks.”

Allen’s approach to the warfare in the trenches mirrors what he wants the rest of the defense to do behind them.

If Allen has his way, the defense will leave the game of wits up to middle linebacker James Laurinaitis before the snap and fire off the ball hell-bent on blowing up the offense’s plans, rather than countering them.

“We want to be an attacking and aggressive style of defense,” Allen said. “We want to try to dictate the tempo to the offense, as opposed to them being able to dictate the tempo to us. We want to play hard and we want to play fast.”

Man I'm fired up. It does require some thumpers at LB and Safety, but with Anthony moving to SAM, and Vaccaro, Harris and Harper at SS, we look good on paper.

I love hearing that we are going to be more aggressive!

Stop getting guys thinking too much and just let them react instead, GW's D was like that.

I'd rather have a defense that sends pressure at the slight risk of a big play, than sitting back and the QB having 5 seconds to scan the field every down.

I read between the lines on this article...

First, some of our defensive linemen are too slow to read and react (hmm, wonder who it could be?)...

Second, there was no way Rankins, at his size, was going to be effective in a two gap system - this makes more sense, plays to his strengths...

Third, we're gonna see alot of fronts with Jordan-Rankins-Fairley-Jenkins and only two linebackers...

Fourth, our defensive backs are going to be sitting back, making reads and coming up to make plays...

Yes I agree with it in fact I think drafting Rankins was done for that specific purpose for get wait, watch react... we are going to GO AFTER THE QB.

God I hope so. Our past rush has been anemic lately.

Pass rush and overall disruption from the interior D-Line is exactly why we picked Rankins, not to mention he was the BPA on defense when we picked.
In fact I think most of our DLine fits the athletic quick penetration types.
Could we actually be designing a system that fits our talent?

rob tried read and react with this group and failed. we did not draft a DT to solve that issue so the only thing left is penetration on the DL. welcome back Gregg Williams mentality.

issue 1 - will the DL hold up against traps and quick hitters?
issue 2 - can the safeties improve in run support?
issue 3 - can the CB do the same an improve in run support?

issue 2 and 3 really worries me. drafting players at the second and third levels with good run support skill has not been a high priority really in the past few drafts.

a flock of veteran LB does make me feel better

Roman Harper anyone... PJ Williams was also big in run support in his college days. I expect Williams to be the slot.

Both Harper and Vaccaro are at their best around the box hitting people. I Think we'll be fine in that aspect.

Designing a defense around the players' strengths. What a novel idea. Why didn't they think of this sooner?

It all sounds good, but I feel like I've heard this story before. I'm with *hagan on this one, especially his 3rd point. This is a team that gets burned deep so often the medical staff keeps fire extinguishers on the sidelines.

Yes sir and I understand your suspicions but ...

This change by Allen will require elevated linebacker play. I think we have the linebackers to pull it off & that D line has improved with the additions of NFairley and Rankins. I expect to see a lot of gang tackling & blitzing.

We have the pieces to be nasty on D.

Trust and believe brother :bng:

I just can't stand when the tackling gets sloppy because they are trying to get the ball out. It happen under Willims and it happen under Ryan. I hope Allen tells them to make sure they have the player wrapped up and then try and get the ball out. Lord please no sloppy tackling. If they tackle well that's half the battle.

Excellent point.

The worst combo I can think of is an attacking defense with bad tackling. Its a recipe for big plays against you.

We must have above average tackling in order for this scheme to work. I think (hope) Dennis knows that.

They played like they literally had leashes on them the last couple seasons.
