cut june 1 12:01am, only someone on acid would take his contract for what he does. or better, what he doesn\'t do.

Whats the cap hit if we cut him?
Is it cheaper to keep him here thru 2005?
What happens if Smith gets a Sage Rosenfells in pre-season?
Steve Gleason (who\'s testing the market as we speak) becomes our starting FS.
Uhhh, I\'d rather have Jones.

I don\'t know the cap ramifications of releasing him but I thought it was big.

If it is a big cap hit then let him compete for a DB spot in camp.
Who is the back-up FS? I\'d feel better with Tebucky than Gleason, or Montgomery, or whoever.
Lets see how he\'d do at SS, or nickle-back, or even dime-back. If he still sucks, cut him later.

BUT...
If we save money by cutting him then its a no-brainer. He\'s a goner, assuming we bring in a decent back-up and/or prospect.

I agree with Danno. And like Danno, I don\'t know what the cap hit would be.

IF it is a big cap hit, I think Tebucky could be used. But, it\'s hard to trust Tebucky ... which is why he\'s being replaced.

However ... with a reduced role, he could be quite effective. Kinda like his situation in New England.

The only thing about it is we are paying too much money for Tebucky to be a role-player. And it\'s doubtful Tebucky would take a pay cut. It\'s not a good situation for us. At all!

Draft day trade or renegotiate and move to strong safety .

I\'d like to see him at SS. This would allow Smith to make plays rather than cover Brown and Bellamy\'s butts, since T-buck at least has the speed to look like he might make a play in space.

HOWEVER, he is too expensive for what he is. If he is unwilling to restructure, then cut him.

Hopefully C.

and we get a Draft pick or something. It would be a waste to just cut him

Sort of...but..he has just been too sloppy...We got ripped off..big time...

there comes a point where you just have to cut your losses..besides..noone would pay him what we are...

His salary, and lack of production will lead to his downfall..

http://espn.go.com/nfl/columns/pasqu...n/1538292.html

\"...deal will be for five years and worth $18.75 million, and it will make Jones one of the highest-paid safeties in NFL history. The contract will include a $5 million signing bonus and a second-tier option bonus of $1 million.\"

If I\'ve got my math right, then his annual cap hit is roughly 3.75 mil per year. The bonus(es) prorate to 1.2 mil per year, and since there\'s 3 years left on the contract, we still have 3.6 mil of bonuses to account for.

So.... it\'d be 3.75 mil to keep him, and 3.6 mil to release him.

EDIT...

Regarding June 1st... If we released him after June 1st, we get to stretch that cap hit (remember, we have paid him 6 mil in bonuses, and we need to account for that against the cap).

If we cut after June 1st, then the normal prorate applies (for this year), and the remaining balance of those bonuses hit next year.

So... if we release him after June 1st, it\'d be a cap hit of 1.2 mil this year (normal prorate), and 2.4 mil next year (remainder of bonuses).

Im sure this will draw a lot of criticism, but I think that Tebucky Jones can still be a player for the Saints. In his productive years in New England, he was surrounded by a defense and especially a secondary that allowed him to be the \"center fielder\" and the ballhawk that he is capable of being. I think that he is too busy playing as the last line of defense to be picking off passes at the same time. Hope you guys dont berate me too much for this one.

Welcome to the board BRSF!

I think T-buck is a solid player, actually; he is just WAY overpaid for what he can do.

If he restructured dramatically, I have no problem keeping him. He is big, has decent speed (though often he misuses it), and he can tackle (finally).

So basically he\'s going to cost us 150,000 to keep instead of cut?

I think he\'s a keeper.

He was better this year than last. What you may see is Bellamy as a Backup and Jones taking his spot. Especially if Gleason leaves, then Bellamy falls into that role as Special Teams Ace. That would be better for Jay also, since he\'s sort of long in the tooth and may be prone to injury.

My question about the Safety situation is what will happen to Mel Mitchell. Dollars to donuts, you\'ll see Mel on the bus and T-Buck in Bellamy\'s spot. With Bellamy as a quality backup til retirement. :D

In terms of salary cap (for this year), yes. Not much difference, right? But keep in mind, if we don\'t cut him now (or after June 1st) then we still have his cap hit to worry about in the future, when we do finally cut or trade him. That is, unless we let him finish out all three more years of his contract.

With that in mind, I would take action as follows:

1) offer him a contract restructure - he\'s overpaid, regardless of how the cap numbers works out
2) if he accepts a restructure, then there are options - offer him as trade bait, or keep him as a starter or backup
3) if he does not take a restructure, he\'s doomed - draft or trade for another safety and cut him after June 1st, eat part of the cap hit this year, the rest of it next year

Since I\'d like to see Thomas Davis in here anyway, T-Buck would end up nothing more than an -extremely- overpaid backup. Same applies if we end up with Darius.
