Saints/Texans evaluation

Defense - PLayed well for the most part, especially considering the futility of our offense. We handled their run game very well and even though our offense was fairly lifeless, we still held them to 16 points.

Are CB's looked to me to be exactly who we thought they were. Very talented, fast, aggressive... and very young. A few uh-ohs in the this game were to be expected. I think this is a very talented young group. I just hope they grow up fast.

I'm hoping our Oline issues were due to it being pre-season, moving players to multiple positions, not game planning, blah blah blah.
Perhaps it was played that way for specific evaluation purposes only. If what we saw was anything close to what we'll see in 3 weeks, we're in big trouble.

Finally, after the Pats game the coaches put extra emphasis on ball security. And the very 1st time we touch the ball we fumble? Seriously? Payton had to be absolutely furious.

I think Hightower just took the lead for the final RB spot. Murphy better shine brightly in the last two games or I think he's a goner.

Thoughts?

Re: Saints/Texans evaluation

oline stinks. Need guards, peat is either going to bust or is lost because they will not allow him to settle into one position. either way the oline is bad.
running game is horrid. there are no holes and this is again the oline.
every time you build you should build both lines first.

Re: Saints/Texans evaluation

Y'all pretty much covered it all. You would think that because we sucked at running the ball, we would've ran more in this game. Who cares if we go 3 and out every series...its pre-season. I am very excited about our D though.

Re: Saints/Texans evaluation

I wouldn't give Murphy another chance; I'd give his spot to Lasco... and let Spiller/TommyLee Lewis return punts and kicks

I'll say it again - Saints made a mistake drafting Peat if they had no intention of playing him at LT. He is NOT a Guard!

Ironically he struggles the most at RT/LT.... He got completely bullied playing LT.

He is average at best playing OG. No doubt a bust for a 1st round pick.

Re: Saints/Texans evaluation

Dan Roushar and coach Payton really need to rethink the "Jack of all trades" project with Peat. Pre season or not, this O line worries me . Someone is going to seriously injure Drew if they don't get it figured out.

Peat looks really bad and Clowney clowned Zach.

The defense is headed in the right direction though.

I just realized we had 4 sacks (Bell, Wilson, Fairley)... Whens the last time we had a 4 sack game?

Re: Saints/Texans evaluation

Giving up double picks in the draft don't help !! I like the players we drafted but there were good players that could have eased some of the problems we're having. I've wanted to address these problems 3 years and counting. Now 2 have to step up from somewhere to settle the G position this season and RT next season. I don't see much progression in building a solid O-line it's more of right here right now with crossing the fingers and hoping. I'm still not on board with the D, playing solid contenders will tell that tale.

At least we didn't have any injuries. Yea...

I predict we win the 4th preseason game if we don't have 4+ turnovers.

Re: Saints/Texans evaluation

Were all seeing the same thing:
The ball handling is a major concern early on.
Improvement on the D is evident and the key to our success.
SP can fix the Offense that part is in his wheelhouse.
Kicking game again will be a concern.

Re: Saints/Texans evaluation

I say we start Turner and Young with the first team. It can't be any worse than Peat and Strief at this point. I mean, if Strief fails, then Peat slides over. Does anyone feel comfortable with that scenario? We should've taken Collins when we had the chance last draft. This Peat pick will haunt us for the next 2 seasons.

I'd feel okay with Peat at RT; Brees has fantastic pocket awareness and that's not his blindside. Screens in that direction would be marginally better...

I haven't listened to Payton's Presser but apparently when asked abour Murphy's fumble he said "We'll find another returner...."

If the quote is true, that is pretty much a death sentence to Murphy's time as a Saint.

He is only a kick and punt returner, Payton will not let him on offense when he can't even hold onto a punt.

PJ Williams responded nicely, he's young and growing pains are to be expected. He needed to turn and locate the ball when he got beat but responded nicely later with a pick in the endzone.

Young, hungry and have potential, they will improve.

I think Peat should follow Murphy out the door, never seen a less aggressive looking O lineman in my life.

If Peat starts at RT, week 1 is Kalil Mack and we'd be putting Brees on IR by the end of the first quarter.

Re: Saints/Texans evaluation

I think it's too early to give up on Peat, but he's actually looking worse, not better.
What's frustrating is that a good OG is typically easier to find than OT and OC

Probably should look at Devin Hester he's a FA.

Everytime I see your avatar I think you are nolaswammi. Then I read your post and realize it is way to coherent to be him. Then I see its you.

Anyway I think the line is a problem. Everyone keeps saying that Peat gets a pass because he had had to play every position on the line and they won't just let him settle into one. I think the reason they keep moving him around is because he sucks at all of them and the coaches hope that if he keeps moving around maybe a lightbulb will go on for him at one of them. They are trying their damndest to make him fit so they don't have to accept the reality it was a blown pick.
I think we will have a veteran lineman signed this week. It wouldn't surprise me to see an Ingram trade. He's got value and they can say his lack of production this preseason is due to the Oline hence the trade.
I just don't know if Hightower is up to the task of taking his spot. We have developed RBs very well under Payton, usually UDFA. I didn't see any of the other running backs do any worse of a job than Ingram.

I really like Ingram so this doesn't come from a place of emotion, it just seems to make sense. More so than trading MCowin or Grayson.

I hope SP doesn't make us regret resigning him. They looked worse than the first preseason game. Disappointment everywhere and in every phase of the game.

Then you really don't know what to look for when watching preseason games.
Most casual fans don't.

Our OLine just simply has no push; and that's nothing new.
It doesn't even matter who the back is.
I've never been excited about Ingram, but he's suffering the same fate as the rest.
Can't even get up to the line of scrimmage without obstruction.
This group is also lacking 3rd-and-1 high percentage capabilities.
They can't even get it done when the box is relaxed on 1st-and-10.
I know its early.
But the fundamental fire in the belly to drive your man off the ball just isn't there.
I think we are going to end up back to the pseudo running game.
Again.

According to Jim Mora we didn't know a good pass rush either.
