Saints rookie Vonn Bell thinks he can be a better blitzer than Tyrann Mathieu
1 Attachment(s)
Despite having veteran starting safeties, Kenny Vaccaro and Jairus Byrd, the New Orleans Saints want safety Vonn Bell to have a role on defense as a rookie.
And even though the Saints drafted Bell for his speed and coverage skills, another talent could help the second-round pick see the field this season. "I think he's a pressure player, so when he comes, I think he can really get to the quarterback pretty quickly," coach Sean Payton said of Bell. "(He has) good burst. He's done a really good job. He's opened some eyes." http://image.nola.com/home/nola-medi...380-mmmain.jpg Told of Payton's analysis, though, Bell wasn't surprised. He had a sack and tackle for loss in Saturday's preseason game against the Texans and has been working on his blitzing skills for years because of former LSU defensive back Tyrann Mathieu, who's now a star with the Arizona Cardinals. "I always watched Tyrann, so I said, 'I think I can do a little bit better than him,'" Bell said. "So, we got the one-on-one drills with the running backs, and I won every one. So, I said, 'Nobody can block me out here.'" read more |

He did some good things vs Texans (6 tackles & a sack). Pass coverage is average but after all he is a rookie but I do like what I see from Mr. Bell thus far.

The Saints need players to make plays.

worry about your angles and open field tackling before you go chasing the glory stats

This is where you put your best 11 players on the field throw scheme out the window and develop your own hybrid D.
Use a Safety as a CB or a LB inside the box... used 3 safties... play box coverage like Seattle. Scheme to put your best 11 players on the field. |

JD couldn't cover but he and Fred Thomas could tackle.
JD could also hang on to the balls that hit his hands. Bell may get his chance given Byrd's recent history. If the front 7 elevate as expected, Bell's ball skills might surprise. At least that's what I hope. |

I applaud his ambition.
I hope he can deliver on his ambition. TM showed an uncanny ability to play defense at LSU. It has carried over to his NFL play with the Cardinals. The constant variable in both situations has been an outstanding group of players surrounding him. That is what I attribute much of Troy Polamalu's success to. He was a hell of a player. But, he has been celebrated for his successes. Few have focused on his being out of place when he guessed and was proven wrong. A great D covered for much of that. I hope Vonn Bell surpasses both as long as he wears Black and Gold. Again, you can't say the kid set his sights too low. I just hope that Bell doesn't freelance too much because we are not DBU or even close to being the Cards' D. Yet ;) |
