CB Sterling Moore signs with New Orleans Saints

1 Attachment(s)
When the New Orleans Saints cut Cortland Finnegan on Tuesday afternoon, they suddenly had just one cornerback — Delvin Breaux — with regular-season experience.

That frightful thought didn't last long, though, as the Saints signed veteran cornerback Sterling Moore to the 53-man roster Tuesday evening, according to his agent Andy Simms. It's a one-year deal.
Moore, 26, played 16 games with nine starts for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season and had 45 tackles, six passes defensed, one interception and three forced fumbles. He joined the Buffalo Bills as a free agent, but was among the team's final cuts.

The signing, which won't be official until Wednesday, brings the Saints roster count back to 53 after a few other moves Tuesday. The Saints cut Finnegan and kicker Kai Forbath, and they signed rookie kicker Wil Lutz.

Right, kick the tires on everyone and anyone that could make the team better. At least it shows they are trying.

Moore is a vested vet and will have his salary guaranteed if he's on the roster week 1.

I don't think this signing is about money.

I thought Finnegan looked good. Why not keep both? Experience. Cut Harris or one of the RB's. Nobody is going to pick them up.

agreed, or redshirt one of the DL or lb's
I really hope Finnegan didn't clean out his locker

If we had kept Finnegan for game one he would have gotten paid for the full year whether he was later cut or not. Not sure if Moore has enough playing time to get the same veteran guarantee.

Re: CB Sterling Moore signs with New Orleans Saints

It makes total sense. Moore is not a vested veteran (four or more years). Finnegan is. They can sign Moore prior to week one and cut him at any point and only be liable for games played. Now Finnegan, if not picked up, can be re-signed AFTER week one and will only be guaranteed four game checks if cut again before week four.

The big difference between the two imo is that Moore if it works out has long term value

This is true, also.

Sterling Moore has played from 2011 -2015 (Bills cut him in 2016).

Why he wouldn't fall under the vested vet category per the terms of the CBA?

A vested veteran has four seasons of active roster experience. Moore had full seasons the last two years. Five games in 2013. Thirteen in 2012 and six in 2011. That adds up to 56 games experience. Four seasons would be 64 games. According to that he isn't yet vested.

I don't think years are defined by games as long as you have participated at some point in all of those years.

I have never heard anything to the contrary, and I see nothing anywhere that suggests 64 games is the benchmark to be considered a vested vet. If you have anything concrete that says 64 games, let me know. I don't see anything.

Let me do some searching again. I came across a source that said explicitly that only games on the 46 man active roster counted toward becoming a vested veteran. From that I gathered four full season at 16 games per season or 64. If games not on the active roster didn't count yet you could get a full year for less that 16 games doesn't make sense.

Re: CB Sterling Moore signs with New Orleans Saints

Vested Veteran – A Vested Veteran is a player with four (4) or more years of accrued service time.

The difficult part is finding the correct definition of accrued service time. You have these but they seem to address free agency or pension definitions, not vesting.

Accrued vs. credited seasons
Accrued season

An accrued season is defined as any season in which a player is under contract at full pay status for six regular season games. Full pay status includes the active and inactive rosters and the Injured Reserve list. Accrued seasons apply to free agency, and are the determining factor in a player’s status as an unrestricted free agent versus a restricted free agent. Any player with one accrued season is considered to be a veteran.

Credited season
A credited season is defined as any season in which a player is under contract at full pay status for three regular season games. Again, full pay status includes the active and inactive rosters and the Injured Reserve list. Credited seasons are used for determining pension eligibility and amount as well as determining a player’s minimum salary eligibility. With three or more credited seasons, players are vested and eligible to collect a pension.

Ah, the hell with it. Wasted too much time already. Neither of these mention being on 46 man active roster, but the one I can't find now did. Damn the CBA is confusing as hell.

Looks like it's just 6 games of the season.

Yeah the rules defining "veteran" and pensions are all I have ever seen anywhere. So I can only surmise that the normal rules for a credited season apply to the vested vet rule. That was my assumption, and searching yielded no further clarity. If it doesn't apply, there sure doesn't seem to be any info on it.

Never realized the Saints had their eye on him for quite some time.

I always liked Moore. I don't understand why we couldn't keep Finnigan to go with Moore.

+1. I thought Finnegan had a fine camp and earned a roster spot. He still has a lot of dog left in him. Maybe he gets called back next week ... maybe not.

The rookies have played fairly well but are not proven like Finnegan. You might be right if one of them get eaten alive.

Yeah you'd think they could have let go of one of the 17 running backs in favor of keeping Finnegan. I was not expecting them to keep Murphy, but I can't imagine why Cadet needs to be on the team.

I've never seen the love for Cadet.

Saw an interesting tweet from Nick Underhill on yesterday as it relates to Moore & covering Odell (having trouble downloading it here) ...

"OBJ w/Sterling Moore in direct coverage last year: 3 catches, 6 targets, 34 yards. Interception, PBU, PBU, forced fumble".

If we can generate some sort of competent pass rush .. maybe, just maybe we can slow down their aerial attack.
