I believe another move is on the way with our cap relief
I think Drews deal freed up about $13 million this year. Possibly sign a Aqib Talib or an offensive lineman? I have a hunch.
|
Re: I believe another move is on the way with our cap relief
Not sure about Talib. 2 or 3 years back maybe but he can't cover quick receivers these days. Could easily turn into another Browner
|
Re: I believe another move is on the way with our cap relief
Yeah, I'm thinking he did it so's to pick up a little more protection.

Re: I believe another move is on the way with our cap relief
I kept waiting for this to happen all off-season so that we could bring in some help on the O-line. I'm not sure what we can get now. They'd have to find a trading partner, and that almost never happens.
The names floating around out there don't figure to cost much. For good reason. Of course, that doesn't mean it wouldn't still be an upgrade... I just don't think this deal is going to change anything for this year, and few of us really thought he wouldn't re-sign at some point. So to me this is rather anti climactic. |

Re: I believe another move is on the way with our cap relief
Realistically, who are they really going to be able to get at the 11th hour, last-minute, down-to-the-wire like this? The time for fixing last year's problems and making splashy blockbuster trades like this, was months ago. Most teams are game-planning and suiting up for their opponents on Sunday, that's three days away, they're not really looking to tinker with trading away starters on their roster. Face it, other teams are not likely going to just ship off an All Pro guard or defensive pass-rushing MVP, on the eve of the big opening game. Most of what's available will be injury prone, bargain basement, spare-parts players at best.

Re: I believe another move is on the way with our cap relief
Big gamble rolling the dice this late. If it works out we make the playoffs; barely. If not it would have not worked out anyway so what else is there to do. At least we are trying.

Re: I believe another move is on the way with our cap relief
I'm happy as hell he resigned I just wish the gave him more money this year and less next because what is the point of having cap room this year now?

If they can take the cap over its a great idea. Who knows what happens before deadline day. Maybe somebody starts the season bad and gets rid of a upcoming FA for a 2017 pick we would now have the cap space to jump in.
Always best to have options |
Re: I believe another move is on the way with our cap relief
Please don't over pay for whatever move you may make Mickey.
|
Re: I believe another move is on the way with our cap relief
We need this for next year because with just 23 million we are at the borderline of only being able to sign one two big FAs and the rest going to draft picks and small pieces.

Re: I believe another move is on the way with our cap relief
He is saying as it stands we have 20ml in free cap next year after the Brees and Unger deals
We dont have many more players that need to get signed other than Willie Snead and possibly Fairley. Evans,Hightower,Harper will be out of contract. Byrd can free up $3.7ml with $8ml dead or $3.4 dead and $8ml on a post June 1st Spiller $2.5 dead and $2.35 savings or $1.25 dead and $3.6ml post June 1st Moresteads contract needs looking at as nearly 5ml for a punter is crazy. There is plenty of ways of creating space |

We've done that with 3 million in space before... :bng: |
Re: I believe another move is on the way with our cap relief
So you want to continue to stretch the cap like the last two offseasons and hope one signing like Browner and Byrd pans out that season?
Just imagine having 30 million in cap and making a splash knowing if we do such a thing we'd be nearly impossible to overlook, we would set a example in the offseason and nobody could game plan for it. We could sign a top player at quite a few positions. |

Re: I believe another move is on the way with our cap relief
Here is what another poster said on another forum
This dead money issue has been building for years. I would be interested to see which team in the league has done the most restructures of deals over the last 5 years but I would bet NO is in the top-2 or 3 teams in the league for that issue. I think they thought with Brees in his prime that they needed to do as much as possible to build around him knowing a day of reckoning would eventually come. Well that day has come this year and even some next year as that $20 million next year really isn't all that great either. Draft class can cost anywhere from $6-7 million. Need another $3-5 million for just the season in general. Then RFA's usually take up another $2-7 million depending how many you have and want to keep. They also don't have anybody but Kenny Vacaro that they can cut, get a nice chunk of cap space, and not have a big dead money hit. So that would mean if they want to sign anybody they would have to restructure another deal once again. The best thing the Saints can do is pretty much this year stick with what they got now that they did the Brees deal and then just know next year that other than maybe 1-2 smaller deals in FA they are just going to have to depend on draft picks to carry them for a bit until Brees' cap hits and dead money get off the books. |

Re: I believe another move is on the way with our cap relief
So we have 10 million. Exactly my point.
|
Re: I believe another move is on the way with our cap relief
We'll probably sign a vet or two after week 1.
But if not, it'll be nice to carry over 10 million into 2017. That would give us a ton of space to add several stud free-agents for another run at it before Drew hangs it up. |
Re: I believe another move is on the way with our cap relief
Sign or trade for a proven Vet with a 1 year deal.

This does not take into consideration what is likely to become an annual occurrence, the next Brees extension. Brees' projected cap hit for 2017 is $19M. A similar extension deal to this last one could add an additional $6M to available cap, bringing the total to $55 million. Also consider that there are a number of players that can undergo restructures, with Cameron Jordan being a prime customer with his $12M cap hit. Let's say they restructure him and a couple of others with minor adjustments to a sum of $3M increased cap space. That brings the grand total of free 2017 cap to $58,000,000! Now how in the hell does this joker get $10M? :dunce: Please quote this so that Willy boy can see the error of his ways. |
