Saints claim rookie quarterback
1 Attachment(s)
The Saints have claimed rookie quarterback Joe Callahan via waivers from the Packers.
The Packers waived Callahan Thursday. He had made the team — and apparently made an impression on the Saints — with a strong preseason showing. Callahan is an undrafted rookie who played Div. III college football at Wesley. The Saints had been going with just Drew Brees and Luke McCown at quarterback on the active roster since cutting Garrett Grayson, a second-year player who’s on the practice squad. The Saints cut veteran tackle Khalif Barnes to create room on the roster for Callahan. Saints claim rookie quarterback | ProFootballTalk |

The Packers loved this kid and he looked damn good in preseason. No doubt they were hoping they could stash him on the practice squad. Not a good look for Grayson.

Joe Callahan
The 6-foot-1, 216-pounder came seemingly out of nowhere (actually, he came out of Division III Wesley College in Delaware) to complete 54 of 88 passes (61.4 percent) for 499 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions during the preseason. Saints claim Packers He had a strong preseason, but doesn't have much of a future as a backup. Joe Callahan - New Orleans Saints - 2016 Player Profile - Rotoworld.com Joe Callahan has all the intangibles and attributes you look for. Despite playing for D-III Wesley College in Dover, Delaware, Callahan displayed many key attributes for a NFL level signal caller. The few that stick out were his arm strength, athletic ability, grit, and leadership. He has the ability to make these crazy plays when his body is in weird positions. In all reality he really reminds me of a poor man’s Brett Favre. https://nflspinzone.com/2016/05/17/g...undrafted-gem/ He’s considered a smart quarterback (6-1, 216 pounds) with a high football IQ, decent arm strength and good scrambling ability. Re: Saints claim rookie quarterback
Why not take a look? Its not like Barnes are going anywhere soon.

Re: Saints claim rookie quarterback
I've talked to a couple of friends that are Packer fans and they're pissed they let this kid go.
|
Re: Saints claim rookie quarterback
Its because we're trading Brees and we'll need a couple decent prospects behind 51 year old backup Luke McCown.
Thanks for the memories Drew. |

Trade Brees for 3 number ones, rebuild our lines, and just win, baby!

Re: Saints claim rookie quarterback
Sean hasn't done well with young QBs he's selected here. But this feels different.

Just a side note I'm thinking if SP starts wearing hooded gray sweatshirts he could be crossing over to the dark side. |
Re: Saints claim rookie quarterback
Sounds like to me they found a better prospect and about to let Grayson go for good.

Re: Saints claim rookie quarterback
two good highlights here of him in preseason...pretty strong arm on the run, and the first 18yarder is beautiful

Re: Saints claim rookie quarterback
dude byrd's contract has to be the worst we have ever given, the guy is counting against until 2019, wtf man... so when we cut him after this year he will add 8mil to the dead money so it will be another 16 mil next year

Re: Saints claim rookie quarterback
He shares the same last name as Dirty Harry.
So I guess you just have to ask yourself one question. Do I feel lucky? |
Re: Saints claim rookie quarterback
Are we shopping Drew around?

John Kuhn, Sterling Moore and BJ Webb. From the readings of prior posters - GB fans, coaches (specifically McCarthy) and A Rodgers all were extremely impressed with Callahan. I don't see this as a bad "move" at all but that's just me. |

Re: Saints claim rookie quarterback
We have four QB's. Four. One on the practice squad and three on the active roster. My guess is we go into camp next year with all four and get down to three with McCown keeping the backup spot ahead of the two inexperienced backups.

Healthy competition...
You know what would be poetic in this? |
Re: Saints claim rookie quarterback
I think this is a big move!
Snagging a QB at this time of the season says a lot about him. I mean he has obviously been on SP radar. He came available and wasted no time in snagging him. Could he be a solid long term back up to our aging back up or could he be the one to take the helm from Brees one day? |
