Broncos game-winning block against Saints may have been illegal

First, it appears that defensive ends Jared Crick and Adam Gotsis held down the Saints’ long snapper, allowing Simmons to jump over the line. Making contact like that with the snapper before he lifts his head is illegal.

Never too late to complain; just too late to do anything about it!

This is why coaches should be allowed to challenge any plays!

Re: Broncos game-winning block against Saints may have been illegal

This was no doubt a "rehearsed" special team's move by the Broncos. They knew it was illegal, but exactly what did they have to lose? If they got flagged for the violation the Saints would line up and kick it again. Moving the ball 10 yds closer wouldn't improve the percentages a great deal, but if they got away with the violation it could alter the outcome of the game. And they did, and it did, and it's done.
Payton & our Special Teams coach should've recognized this immediately and called a referee huddle instead of concentrating on a sideline issue that couldn't be proven. I think it was Bill Cowher, I'm not sure, but one of the after game analyst said there is film of the Broncos doing this same exact move in previous games. Why was our field goal unit not ready for this?

Challenge any play? The game would be 5 hours long. It is what it is.

On to Carolina.

Re: Broncos game-winning block against Saints may have been illegal

I watch the play numerous of time and # 93 intentionally held the center down so # 31 Justin Simmons who have a 40' inch vertical and 126 broad jump can be clear to jump over the center. #93 wasn't lined up over the center so I don't have a clue if it is legal or illegal but I do know that this was designed by their special team coach. I am 100% sure #34 parks ran out of bounds, it's not like his right foot shrunk cause his shoe is white. These refs are now refusing to reverse any calls even with replay.

http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/...ons?id=2555550

The more I look at it, the odds of the one of the two Denver players out of 11 wearing white shoes picked up the fumble, the other 9 was wearing orange cleats.

I am just not at all surprised that we are the 1st loss of this kind.
We seem to find a way to break new ground.
For them to pull that off, many stars had to line up just right...and they did.
From the Brees-to-Cooks ecstasy to the block-scoop agony within 2 minutes.
I've had to walk out of the dome after those kind...
and then drive home 5 1/2 hours...

Did I say coaches give coaches unlimited challenges?

Leave the # of challenges where they are, but a coach could challenge a holding, or PI; call look at all the times we complain about Jordan being held. If the refs missed a holding call on Jordan, for example, and the result of the play is a critical 1st down or a touchdown, wouldn't you want SP to have the ability to challenge that?

If Michael Thomas could hold onto the ball, we wouldn't be talking about this play.

Re: Broncos game-winning block against Saints may have been illegal

Would we expect any other response from a Goodell employee?

ARTICLE 6. DEFENSIVE HOLDING
It is a foul for defensive holding if:
a defensive player tackles or holds any opponent other than a runner, except as permitted in Article 5
during a punt, field goal attempt, or Try-kick attempt, B1 grabs and pulls an offensive player out of the way, allowing B2 to shoot the gap (pull-and-shoot) in an attempt to block the kick, except if B1 is advancing toward the kicker.
Note: Any offensive player who pretends to possess the ball, and/or one to whom a teammate pretends to give the ball, may be tackled until he crosses the line of scrimmage between the tackles of a normal tight offensive line.

Penalty: For defensive holding: Loss of five yards and an automatic first down.

Saints' LongSnapper Drescher was clearly held down by not one but two Denver Defenders while another leaped over him...

So Blandino is as full of horsesh*t as Hillary Clinton...

Exactly & neither one of hem had any INTENT to try and block the kick they knew what their job was from the get go hold the center at the snap....Even one of the Broncos players on the sideline said the no call on the step out was BS.....I feel like if the roles were reversed we are getting called for everything on that play

Re: Broncos game-winning block against Saints may have been illegal

Here is the thing that I always say about stuff like this. These calls are subjective, the referees are humans and they have to make split-second decisions; but their IMPRESSIONS of the game and the two teams involved, are very important. Bottom line: if the refs RESPECT you, if they think you are a good player or team and they think you're playing good ball, they will GIVE YOU all the calls you will ever need. If they don't respect you and your team, it's gonna be a long day for you.

How many times have we seen the type of thing, even for the Saints -- when a team has the momentum the refs will spot the ball favorably, they will not call holding, they keep the flags in their pockets or throw them on the other team to extend drives. How many times have you seen Drew or Peyton Manning or another marquee player argue for something with the ref, and get it (the most famous one was a game where I saw the refs put more time back on the 45-second clock and saved the Colts a time out, because Peyton asked them for it).

If you're playing good football, with good fundamentals and good sportsmanship, the refs WILL call these things your way. If you're playing badly, losing the game, and barely hanging on , then when something goes wrong you appeal to the refs and they don't want anything to do with it -- 'talk to the hand.' This is why when receivers are divas and complain and look around for the flag, they almost never get it. The refs aren't robots -- their impressions of who is the better team on the field, is important.

Bottom line what happened yesterday was very simple -- the calls did not go our way because the reality is that the refs do not RESPECT the Saints, especially our special teams unit, which is sloppy and is already widely known in the league for being sub-par and taking plays off. That's the Saints' coaches' problem, not the refs.

I can agree with that. Not sure if you saw any of the NE/Seattle game last night but I thought Kam Chancellor got away with a few muggings (4th and goal vs Gronk) however he is such an impactful player, he got the benefit of a non call.

Not so sure our guys would have gotten away with that :(.

Re: Broncos game-winning block against Saints may have been illegal

It looked legal to me. Situational awareness. Have to be ready for something like that with the game on the line IMO. They saw a weakness and exploited it.

The real travesty is two critical fumbles by the same player rookie or not. Then we had an opportunity for a field goal earlier and we go with the tough throw instead. But not the biggest bonehead move of the weekend for sure. Pats throwing from the one on 4th when Blount already ran 3 in from the one. They obviously could not stop it so why stop doing it.

jeanpierre 11-14-2016 10:46 AM

Re: Broncos game-winning block against Saints may have been illegal

There was nothing legal about the play...

Two Denver defenders pushed and held down on a defenseless player while a linebacker jumped over the long snapper...

Subjective? The umpire and referee shouldn't be calling games for the rest of the season for missing the obvious...

The fact that its happened twice and cost two losses also means the Special Teams Coach is a *** **** moron and should be fired for not bringing the issue up with the referees...

Re: Broncos game-winning block against Saints may have been illegal

If the two denver players pushed down on Dreschers back, surely isn't that a block in the back or holding on the defense?

Read this you guys, these are the altered rulea for the 2016 season

Goal/Extra Point Rush Tactics

Game officials will monitor and strictly enforce the rules pertaining to illegal acts committed by the defensive team while trying to block field-goal and extra-point attempts during the 2016 season, including:

Making forcible contact below the waist of offensive blockers.
Grabbing an offensive blocker and pulling him to the side or toward the ground to create space or a gap for a teammate to rush through.
Using the hands or other parts of the body to push off an offensive blocker to gain leverage in an effort to block the kick.

Here's a close-up video of the defensive holding with the Umpire (No. 102) clearly able, and unwilling, to pull the flag and make the call...

NOTICE that No. 93 holds down Drescher allowing the linebacker to leap over; in fact, the linebacker buoys his balance against No. 93's helmet which is also, technically, a penalty...

Re: Broncos game-winning block against Saints may have been illegal

Blandino has been on the radio defending the call all day. You can push the lineman down, you just can't pull him. He equates it to that of an o-lineman...push is ok, pull is a hold.

I think more should be put on our special teams coach. Film on Denver doing this was out there, shame on us for not being prepared.

Oh and I think it was mentioned before but we turned the ball over 4 times. That's what got us beat.

Re: Broncos game-winning block against Saints may have been illegal

Granted, I know it's in slow motion, but when I look at that video above, I see one team that is going through the motions, phoning it in, like the extra point was a gimme formality in the Pro Bowl and it didn't really matter, and I see another team playing with heart and passion and fire, jumping in to try and make a play to turn the balance of the game and WIN. Away from the block, just look at the push and the leaping on the left side of the Broncos and how there's pretty much no physicality to the Saints line there at all, like they're just expecting to lightly tap pads and go home. Watch it again from any angle you like, and look at the difference in energy level between the two teams. That's why it happened one time earlier in the year, and that's why the WHOLE CITY should be calling for McMahon's resignation/firing right now. The special teams unit is poorly coached and it's costing us games.

Put yourself in a position to lose and you'll usually succeed.

4 turnovers. End of story.

Totally, totally agree - Payton and the Saints are in the rarest of moments this season in finding ways to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory - these are games that just in no way should be lost in these extraordinary means...

I'm just calling total BS on the League and Blandino for actually defending botching this call and not admitting they got it wrong...
