McMahon will be SP's achilles.
Just like Carl Smith was to Jim Mora.

Re: MCMAHON MUST GO!!!

It's funny we could be better without Special teams coach. New philosophy: Don't kick FGs and always fair catch. Probably there would be more points on the board and better field position.

Maybe he should try running backwards 2nd half :p.

Just kidding...

McMahon knows where the bodies are buried so to speak. He's an old buddy of Payton's from college.

Re: MCMAHON MUST GO!!!

Exactly. In that case, Loomis should fire him.

Blocked fg was the difference in this game. 2nd week in a row.

It appears obvious you wonder what keeps him here.

Re: MCMAHON MUST GO!!!

We have a top 5 punter in the league. We have an impressive rookie kicker. And in spite of that we have far and away the worst the special teams in the league. Also the worst special teams in franchise history, and there have been some doozies.

The way things are going, we should put Brandin Cooks in at holder so at least we have speed on the field to run down the other team. Gotta do something since we can't seem to fire golden boy McMahon.

Re: MCMAHON MUST GO!!!

Fire Payton too.

I can't believe commentators are still talking about our super bowl win, seriously what has payton done since?

How the hell he got a 5 year extension is beyond me, 3 straight losing seasons and soon to be bottom of the south.

The sad thing is the defense is showing up and we're losing

Re: MCMAHON MUST GO!!!

I guess I'll be the one to say that our kicker is really, really bad.

Of course McMahon needs to go. Our special teams have been bad all around for years. But blocks are 90% of the time the fault of the kicker, and the one tonight was definitely his fault. Nobody got through. A guy just stuck his hand in the air and magically blocked it. You HAVE to get the ball up. Especially on a chip shot like that, you have no excuse not to make sure that you get well under that ball. This has been happening all season.

He's had numerous kicks blocked, and a hand full of others that were tipped, including on PAT's. He's doinked at least one or two PAT's off the upright that he got lucky on, and has had his fair share of regular missed FG's. His whole thing was supposed to be about his strong leg, and yet we've seen a couple of 50 plus yarders fall short, because he miss-hit it. His kickoffs don't consistently get deep like Morestead used to do.

I tried saying this weeks back and seemed that few really agreed. Am I still in the minority, or are we just going to keep talking about McMahon?

He's a rookie so me personally he gets some slack....these past 2 weeks were NOT his fault don't know where those percentages came from but yea the Kid is pretty good...Sean is not reason for special teams mishaps I honestly cant blame Sean for these past 2 losses definitely not Denver...Im pretty sure he emphasized security on the FG's it comes down to the ST coach at the end of the day

The one last week was a PAT. Yes a guy jumped over the line and part of that blame goes to the line, but if Lutz had been quicker to the ball and gotten the ball up higher it shouldn't have been blocked.

I said that the one tonight was his fault, and yes, it was his fault. Nobody penetrated through the line, nobody jumped over. He kicked it straight into the raised arms of a lineman. That CAN'T happen on a short field goal, and yet it did. That is absolutely on Lutz, and for the life of me I can't understand why people keep giving him a pass. I know he's a rookie. But this has been going on all year long. And kickers don't have to learn a play book. They just kick. So how much should I put on the fact that he's a rookie?

I didn't see these excuses being made for Hocker last year.

Re: MCMAHON MUST GO!!!

Who catches the kickoff on the 1 yard line on the sideline? That's a peewee league football mistake. High schoolers know better than that.

Do they even practice special teams during the week?

NY Giant

Fg turns into -7 ten point turnaround

Why wasn't this corrected then?

Re: MCMAHON MUST GO!!!

There is a reason field goals are blocked 2 weeks in a row. Fire the dumbarse! We've lost 5 games by a total of 15 points and that's a point average. I hope they see the importance of a freaking field goal.

I'm just so disheartened now. We always find a way to lose. We are beginning to look like the Saints of old. Payton needs to do something now. No more field goals or extra points. We go on all 4th downs and 2 point conversions every time. We would certainly come out ahead.

and did I say fire that dumbarse!

"Could've, Would've, Should've isn't good enough. The Good Teams don't come in and say that........"

The Saints are not a "Good" team.

Lutz came from a small school with little to no coaching. At his first(I believe) kicking clinic he caught Harbaughs eye who brought him into training camp where he had his first real kicking coach. Harbaugh carried him on the roster until we played in preseason and suggested that we give the kid a tryout. We cut both of our kickers and signed the kid.

He is special but he needs professional coaching. He got better in Baltimore and looked great when he got here with a little attention from a special teams expert. He needs to be coached about his approach, timing and trajectory. A real coach who understand technique could make this kid our long term solution to what we've been missing since Morten Anderson left.

Do we know that because he came from a small school, he had little to no coaching? He's just a kicker. I have a hard time believing he's received any less coaching than any other rookie. Unless you've heard for sure that he had little coaching.

But even if that is the case, it's still not a valid excuse for me. Payton said he had THE best workout for a kicker he had ever seen. I don't know why Payton said that, after what I've seen, but if Lutz were this fundamentally flawed in practice I can't imagine he would have impressed anyone.

I just think when the pressure is on, he loses concentration. That's ultimately the difference between a good kicker and a bad one. It's all about confidence.

Have posted this before...

On Booby Hebert's Monday night radio show (or Tuesday in event of MNF), he exonerated Carl Smith saying Mora wouldn't trust offense and held 'em back...

Not always impressed with Hebert, but that night I was with the way he stopped the caller mid-stream, monologued and was forthright about Mora's mistrust and failing to publicly accept heat and wrongly letting Smith take the heat for about five minutes and then brought on Carl Smith...

A few weeks later one of the producers remarked how the switchboard was lit up when they announced the guest and that after Hebert "enlightened" calls the board cleared briefly and that several callers then called with graciousness to Smith...

Make no mistake though, this is on Payton and his failing to jettison an ineffective coach...

And since Loomis is a rubber stamp, that's not going to happen...

That's why I've said Loomis is the weak link on this team...
