Saints will add an additional special teams coach, report says
1 Attachment(s)
Special teams has been anything but special for the New Orleans Saints this season. It appears the Saints will attempt to aid the unit by adding a special teams coach to the existing staff, Fox's Jay Glazer reported Sunday morning.
The Saints already have two special teams coaches with Greg McMahon as the coordinator and Stan Kwan as the assistant coach. The report didn't include who will be joining the staff. Sean Payton didn't want to single out anyone from the staff in his Friday press conference for the poor play in the loss to Carolina on Thursday. Instead, he pointed the finger at himself. Follies have been plentiful for the Saints on special teams all season with issues in the kicking game and the return game. The Saints have watched three field goals blocked with two turning into a Giants touchdown and a Broncos two-point conversion. The block in Carolina nearly became a TD, but was negated for a block in the back. The Panthers did score a TD on the next play, though. The kick-return game ranks near the bottom of the NFL and there's been a revolving door in the kick and punt returner jobs. Saints will add an additional special teams coach, report says | NOLA.com |

I don't get this. I'm a big supporter of Payton, but this seems ridiculous. It almost screams that he is just taking care of buddies and not taking care of business.
I really wish he would just get rid of McMahon. Cmon Payton. |

Just gives him a reason to keep McMahon around and look like he's doing something about the issues.

On the other hand, it may be a Ryan-Allen situation, in which someone is brought in to eventually take over.

Un-fricking-believable. Let's just keep spending Mr. Benson's money, shall we? Dead money on players, now we have dead money spent on coaches on the staff who aren't doing anything....

I agree that something needs to be done with the coaching, but I am not sure what can be done when a team is so far down the depth chart as the Saints are?

Sent the message to McMahon that he is going to be released. The rest of the season is an audition for a coaching job somewhere else. Might be a genius move. He knows he can't be complacent now because he won't be employed by his friend anymore.

smart, mcmahon is on thin ice. jhe is sending a message while also not completely changing things midseason

Re: Saints will add an additional special teams coach, report says
If Payton wants, he can hire me as well as a remote special teams consultant. My first order of business would be to tell him that this move is a frivolous exercise and looks to the outsider as entitling McMahon. #TakingTwoPeopleToChangeALightbulb

This move is about Payton saving face and avoiding reality....surely there has to be a reason why they are now paying three special teams coaches to do the job that one was supposed to be doing -- although I know that you have the black and gold goggles on and will never ever admit or acknowledge that. They have been propping up McMahon for years with bringing in kicking consultants like Carney, and adding assistants, and with Payton stepping in to help him....and yet with all the help he's had, the unit is STILL consistently one of the worst in the league and barely able to kick an extra point on Sundays. |
