RUMOR CENTRAL: Saints to Trade for Jimmy Garoppolo?

The two most likely suitors for Garoppolo in a potential trade? The Cleveland Browns and the New Orleans Saints.

Here’s what Breer said in regards to the Saints possibly trading for Garoppolo, the back-up QB to Patriots QB Tom Brady:

“As for New Orleans, the Saints have been kicking tires on young quarterbacks through the past two draft cycles, were high on Garoppolo in 2014 and saw him in joint practices with New England the past two summers, and will have a 38-year-old Drew Brees going into a contract year in 2017.
Theoretically, they may like Garoppolo better than anyone in what’s expected to be a mediocre QB lot this spring, and could bring him aboard on his rookie deal for next year, then tag him in 2018 and do a long-term deal then. At any rate, this should all be interesting, and I’m willing to make an educated guess Belichick knew he was feeding into it last week.”

Yep I could totally see this happening. Another thing to keep in mind is that Mike Glennon will be a free agent after this season and Payton was high on him as well.

Didn't he play at Eastern Illinois ... same as Payton ... same as Tony Romo (Payton coached here in Dallas) ? ... hmm, very interesting.

For the record, I like Jimmy Garappolo's game. Wouldn't be a bad option.

Garoppolo? If you could get him, maybe...

I tell you the guy we should have brought in this pass year is Brian Hoyer...

He'd be an incredible backup to Brees and make a great transition quarterback (2-3 seasons) at the very least...

Guy has had a series of bad breaks in bad situations...

Belichick originally signed him to the Pats and Brady has said he's got the goods...

Brian Hoyer - Player Analysis+Scouting Service

I'd like to see him in the black and gold next season...

Since we're playing "What if" Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott in exchange for "the kid" and Ingram.

If the Pats are bullish on Jimmy G, it'll take a big chip like Terron Armstead, which Belichik and Brady would jump, to make that deal happen...

Ask the Chiefs how it worked out going after the guy who played well when Brady was out.

I think Hoyer is underrated too, but IMO he is a streaky QB. For a stretch of games he looked outstanding in Cleveland (which is extremely hard to do), but then he can go through stretches where teams are almost forced to bench him.

Two names: Matt Cassel and Brian Hoyer. Buyer Beware.

Hoyer is 31 and a Journeyman who has gone through some brutal teams.
Seem's you would need a great deal of Psychotherapy to clean his slate.
That said he would probably flourish working with Drew. I'm most likely
half blind but I don't see it.

I would wait, the draft pick that it will take to land Garoppolo is needed in other areas. Address the situation once Brees starts to decline, or decides he wants out.

Re: RUMOR CENTRAL: Saints to Trade for Jimmy Garoppolo?

Garoppolo could be a hot commodity given the next draft class. The list of potential FA QB's are full of known commodities past their prime or mediocre players. I can see a half dozen teams kicking the tires on this guy and we would have to give up a bundle. I can totally see us being interested in we 100% believe next year is Drew's last with the Saints regardless of performance. But he's still at his age way better than most QB's in the game. I say wait til next year's draft class and/or FA squad to make the decision.

Jimmy Garoppolo for Stephone Anthony?

If your rolling the dice on a young kid that is groomed in a system that is close to one you run the pats are about the only team. Drew Vs Tom as a mentor? Pretty much a Draw.

I know pats fans will warm up to the trade quickly.

I wouldn't mind this idea as long as we don't have to mortgage the farm! I can't see the Pats letting him go cheap though....

Re: RUMOR CENTRAL: Saints to Trade for Jimmy Garoppolo?

The History of Drafted QB's (under Bill Belichick):
With the exception of Tom Brady not a very good track record.

Tom Brady (Sixth round 2000, 199th pick)

Rohan Davey (Fourth round 2002, 117th pick)
Was released in August 2005 with no return.

Kliff Kingsbury (Sixth round 2003, 201st pick)
Spent his rookie year on IR and was released by September 2004.

Matt Cassel (Seventh round 2005, 230th pick)
Started for an injured Brady in 2008, and was then traded to the Kansas City Chiefs for a second-round pick (used to draft Patrick Chung).

Kevin O’Connell (Third round 2008, 94th overall)
Made it through one training camp and was released in 2009.

Zac Robinson (Seventh round 2010, 250th pick)
Released by September 2010.

Ryan Mallett (Third round 2011, 74th overall)
After three seasons in New England, Mallett was traded to Houston for a 2016 seventh-round pick. They flipped that pick to the Seahawks in a deal for a 2017 fourth-round pick.

Jimmy Garoppolo (Second round 2014, 62nd overall
Garoppolo has looked promising in his brief time under center.

I can't see trading for a QB when we need players in so many other positions.

Two names: Matt Cassel and Brian Hoyer. Buyer Beware.

Neither of which are coached by Sean Payton...

I seeem to recall a "buyer beware" tag placed on a certain young San Diego QB.

Um that "buyer beware" was due to a badly torn labrum, not performance. The Chargers had two winning seasons in 2004 and 2005 and went 12-4 and won the AFC West with Brees in 2004. Brees was a top 10 NFL QB in 2005 with 3500+ yards and 24 TDs.

Brees in 2005 and Garoppolo now are like apples and gorillas.

If trading for him would include a draft pick I much rather spend that pick on drafting a young QB instead.

We've only got 5 picks at the minute I believe, we simply can't afford to give away another.

Looks like we won't have to trade for Garoppolo after all. We might have Bree's replacement already on the team.

Drew will be here for another few years. Keep looking for the right developmental prospect. Drew won't leave. He's busy chasing too many records and can win a Super bowl here easier than with a brand new team.

Sorry but I doubt Payton would've made stars out of those other QBs either. Look at all the QBs we've drafted and unloaded already. Payton was lucky to get Brees. It was Brees that had the determination to come back and be the best that he can be. Payton didnt instill that in him.
