Saints kicker Wil Lutz focused on fixing his trajectory problem

Saints coach Sean Payton's review of the film Friday morning showed a ball that rose a little more than he initially expected after watching Butler's block live from the sidelines.

"The kick is a little lower than you’d like, but coming off that field and talking to you guys last night, it felt like it was a real low get-off. And watching the tape from the end-zone copy, the protection has to be a little bit better," Payton said. "I don’t see it being as low on film today. It still needs to get up a little quicker."

Question, why can't we find a kicker. A kicker?????

Not his fault people can't block...
Now that he is focused on something aside from making the kick, expect some misses...

Coach him up ...

Bring in Carney to consult/assistant to special team... someone, anyone. There is potential from Lutz but his form needs improvement. A competent special teams coach would have diagnosed and corrected/taught him to do things better.

In the meantime I would hold a player on each side to prevent a run back
in the event of a blocked kick.

Pay Morten Anderson's flight down and wine and dine him in all the local hot spots. Spend the days c ashcoursing Lutz

And get on Payton's case for being so lacks

Hell we could be 7-3

Also tackling.

I agree it is a bit of an issue, needs to stop kicking it like it is a 50 yarder vs a 30.

Bigger issue is the right hand side of the OL allowing way to much push by the defense.

we need to do a lot of work on our OL depth

Right now it suxs and has suxed for years.

So he's saying he can't get it up?

That is why the "little blue pill" is football shaped!

Here we go.

If Lutz doesn't know how to kick it higher by now, he'll never learn.

His "trajectory problem" is the same as just about all kickers in the NFL, they are kicking the ball wrong, it is that some kickers learn to compensate for that.

NFL kickers are said to kick the ball "Soccer style", with the inside of the foot, but really, there isn't a "Soccer style"... in Soccer, you kick the ball with whichever part of the foot will give you the desired result/effect. If you want the ball to come up high and straight, and travel far, you kick it low with the top of the foot. Your upper body should lean away from the ball, not towards it. That's it.

The special teams drama has killed this team since the last time it was actually stable - 2009-2010. Since then, it has been one disaster after the next.

On WWL Morten Andersen said both his trajectory and his get off time is coachable and correctable, but you normally do it in the offseason, not during the season

Looks like he got that problem squared away.

Yeah it usually takes really small changes to achieve but to get it reliable it takes a ton of reps.

I definitely thought the trajectory on his kicks were better today.

I beg to differ sir. Lutz never had a competent kicking coach until his senior year in college wher ehe was discovered by Harbaugh at his first kicking clinic who sent him an invitation to training camp. The kid is raw with amazing potential and just needs some kicking technique corrections. The problem is that Lutz stated that he is trying to figure out how to correct the problem instead of McMahon figuring it out.

I played rugby for over 35 years and just learned how to drop kick a rugby ball recently. So adults can still learn to kick better with a little coaching......just sayin'.
Edit: You are correct about the correct kicking technique with a soccer style kick. Good points....but he can still be the man with good coaching. Fire McMahon.:brood:

It's just like golf. Keep your head down until well after contact with the ball.
It's amazing how much the rest of your body follows what your head does.
