If SP gets fired who do we want to replace him?

Should we give current OC Pete Carmichael a turn with the reigns, or should we look at former head coaches?

Personally I wouldn't mind Gruden or Cowher.

Re: If SP gets fired who do we want to replace him?

I wouldn't want a has-been like Cowher or Gruden who has been away from the game for too long. Maybe it's because I'm a Lakers fan and remember Rudy Tomjanovich bombing out as our coach.

A good NFL assistant or college coach who is hungry to prove himself would be better. Jim Schwartz switched the Eagles from a 3-4 to a 4-3 and they are doing quite well, I think he's worth a look. Also KC coordinator Bob Sutton.

Payton's not going anywhere. The Dome was sold out Sunday, and concession lines were long. Even if some people fail to renew their season tickets there is still a long waiting list to replenish the loss. Hard to see any reasons for shakeups or organizational changes coming anytime soon.

Wishful thinking all the way around.

First off Payton isn't going to get fired. He will leave on his own terms as neither Loomis nor Benson have any intention of getting rid of him. Payton and Brees have both made it pretty clear that they do not want to play without one another. So you can expect the two to go out together. But depending on circumstance that'll be as long as 3 years.

Secondly if Carmicheal cannot generate consistent turnover free offense as the OC, why would you think that he'd be any better at it as HC?

Gruden and Cowher have cushy TV jobs. Both have had numerous opportunities to reenter the game. On average 6 NFL head coaches are fired each and every year. Cowher has been out nearly 10 years and Gruden nearly 8. Each has already reached the pinnacle of their coaching profession. Both are making a very comfortable living doing what they do now. So exactly what motivation or amount of money would realistically lure them back into the abyss of coaching?

I understand that folks are frustrated with the current situation. But can we at least be realistic about the possible options? Trust me, as bad as it is now, it'll be worse when Brees and Payton hang it up. Like multiple year top-5 picks like Cleveland and the Jags bad. Like San Francisco was in the Super Bowl 3 years ago and look where they are now bad.

Be careful what you wish for. You may just get it handed to you.

If by some slim chance SP is fired, it would probably be best to completely clean house and start over. I would take a long look at Raheem Morris and maybe Josh McDaniels.

settle down, SP isn't getting fired

now if McMahon isn't fired after this season then its obvious that SP wants to be surrounded by yes men

Sean isn't getting fired, nor should he be imo.

Look around the league. I'm not going to make excuses since some already have their torches and pitchforks on display. We are a midling team right now. If you're calling for Sean's job you likely don't weigh the circumstances as heavily as I do. There are circumstances nonetheless.

I'm still excited about our team. Color me a rebel.

Don't think cower would come back. Gruden could be swayed cause of Brees.

So we should be happy with "middling" over the past 4 years? Another 7-9 or 6-10 season should seal his fate.

See my post above. While maybe it should, Benson, Loomis, Payton, and Brees are thick as thieves because they all made it to the mountaintop together. So it won't.

And again there is no guarantee that the post Payton/Brees era is going to be any better. Witness the fall of the 49ers.

Speaking of that, that brings up the one guy worth targeting: Jim Harbaugh. Throw the kitchen sink at him to get him to leave Michigan. Clean house, $12 million/year contract, total control of football operations. That's the one guy in the profession that has proved his worth coaching at the NFL level, but doesn't yet have the ring. And most importantly, he knows how to win in the NFL without an elite QB.

But I believe it's wishful thinking again. Harbaugh is in the position to be the next Schembeckler. I really cannot think of a reason why he'd ever want to leave.

3 blocked kicks not getting blocked would have changed this whole season. I'm sure everyone remembers Hartley's 20 something yard miss in the dome against ATL that wound up costing us HFA? Sean has already made a move to improve special teams.

Re: If SP gets fired who do we want to replace him?

It has been quite clear for some time that Sean will not be fired.

But for the sake of entertainment, I have what I believe to be a plausible scenario if he did get fired. Mike McCarthy... Not super exciting, but there are plenty of reasons why it could happen.

From what I understand, McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers are not exactly the best of friends. Rodgers (if the numerous rumors have any truth) apparently thinks that he is the man in Green Bay, and that Mike is just an idiot who gets in his way. IF that is true, coupled with the somewhat rough season they have had, I could see the Packers moving on from McCarthy.

If Payton got fired, I think McCarthy might even want to leave Green Bay to take the Saints job, if offered, if his relationship with Rodgers is that toxic. He has history here, Benson knows him, and he is a good offensive guy who'd undoubtedly love to have a guy like Brees if he were to move on from GB.

I'd view it as somewhat of a lateral move on our part, but it might be one of those things where both Payton and McCarthy need a change of scenery to re-energize. I don't see the Saints trying anyone without NFL head coaching experience, as long as Brees is here.

But again, Payton will not be going anywhere. I would not be surprised if McCarthy does leave or get fired, though.

No one is saying you should be anything. But consider this: you can speculate all you want as to who you want to be the next coach, but who do you trust to actually make such decision within the Saints organization? Tom Benson? Gayle Benson? Lauscha? Loomis? even Ireland? Who? Who's going to tell Benson who to hire, as Parcells did back in 2006?

Sure, the Saints seem to be on their way to their 3rd consecutive sub .500 season, but this could ( and I think it will) get really, really ugly once Payton is out of New Orleans. I just don't think there is anyone within the Saints organization who can make an effective hire at this time.

Happy? Well, yeah. Sean and Drew have a lot to do with why. Look, since they arrived, from day 1 up to last Sunday, we have a shot. It is true we play down to our competition sometimes. And like I said I won't get in to all the circumstances -- too much passion.

There are many levels of satisfaction. I might require my team to make the playoffs every year for example. Of course that is not realistic. Having been a Braves fan from the 70s and a Saints fan all my life, I'm well versed in what it's like to know *right now* that my team will suck next year too. It's why I'm "Happy" to know we will compete (defensive issues not withstanding, of course). We will compete this weekend. This team with a few breaks is leading the division by a game, even if you consider the unmentioned 'circumstances'.

We're young, by and large. We know exactly where our problem areas are. Once we get healthy we will have a better idea of our depth than most. And our depth will have time served under fire. Carolina and Atlanta will be no better next year. The Bucs might be. We might be too. In fact I think we will be. Because of our 'circumstances', we will have a favorable schedule.

Yeah. I'm happy. But more to the point I have something to be excited about.

McCarthy has one of the same problems as Payton - he can't decide whether he wants to call the offensive plays or not!

I know. But it's something that I just see as a would-be possibility, if Payton got fired. I'm not enamored with McCarthy, but he's got a very similar resume to Sean, and if Payton got fired I think management would look to get someone similar to him. The logic would be giving McCarthy a fresh start here. That is what a lot of people think that Payton needs, because while we pile of offensive stats, the team always seems to be a mess. He seems too comfortable, letting all of his ole pals hang around despite their poor track record.

The thing is, Benson doesn't seem to care about any of that. He obviously feels indebted to this staff, so he just let's it go.

True the second part, but it's merchandise and network appeal instead of seat sales now. The more you win, the more folks watch the more the Saints go nationwide instead of local and in come more bucks. Seat sales quit being a driving factor about the same time the Saints figured out they could get better players from across the state lines. Draw shmaw.

I have no clue for our special teams and kicking game since Sean Payton seems to think he knows kickers (11 kickers in 11 seasons) and that McMahon is the right man for the job. Hopefully Allen has a multi-season plan for the defense and SP lets him own it and doesn't intervene.

The 2017 season will be telling for Coach Payton.

We are a young team and a lot of dead money falls off the books next year. If there is two more years of sub 500 I could see it but My expectations for playoffs was next year. A few extra points and a poorly defended two point conversion and we would be leading the division this year.

Re: If SP gets fired who do we want to replace him?

Sean Payton just signed a five year contract. If I'm correct that means we are going to pay him a salary for the next five years.......so, he's got a couple of more years before we need to start asking this question.

This team has been drafting better and hitting on inexpensive free agents. We are a young team on the upswing and improving steadily week after week on the defense. The front office needs to concentrate on the O-line in the off season and bring in some real linemen not some late draft pick that we hope we can coach up like Lelito. We can't build a dynasty like that.

We have cash to spend with a lot of dead money coming off the books after the season. I just hope that we aren't going to throw it at some big name free agent signing to solidify the DE's. Even if he's good we can't afford to take that chance. I still don't believe we know how to evaluate top tier talent even though we're great at finding late round and UDFA gems. We still need someone to reign in Payton and his willingness to gamble at draft time. It's in his nature and he needs a handler. So does Loomis because he is just Payton's yes man and bean counter. We can't afford to stay in the win now mode.

We are coming off a rough season with a lot of chest clutching finishes. We were a couple of special teams play away from several wins that just slipped away from us. We were playing second and third stringers to start the season while signing free agents off the street due to a rash of injuries. Fortunately we got back on track after an 0-4 start and watched Dennis Allen implement a good defense while making crucial half time adjustments. We got Ellerbe, Rankins and Breaux back on the field and making strong contributions. I know I say every 7-9 or 8-8 season but I believe next year will be awesome!

Edit: Having said that I'm still hoping for a fresh perspective with an infusion of some new coaching blood. Hopefully McMahon and other members of Payton's posse will get the boot and they find some fiery and hungry and young talented coaches. The organization seemed stale a few years back and we brought in some new blood and the results have been positive.:bng:
