Morstead

Is he injured? I haven't noticed him kicking much.
Also why do teams need a FG kicker AND a punter? I imagine some are good enough to do both.

Re: Morstead

Few are good enough to do both. Although I'm sure there are several that are adequate, but not nearly reliable to do both. Plus if the punter or kicker gets injured, the other has his duties for the remainder of the game. You have one guy that does both and he gets injured, you're **** out of luck for both positions.

Re: Morstead

Yeah this has been tried before and usually don't work out. The different types of kicking are so highly specialized.

Re: Morstead

He hasn't been worth the money the past few years.... seems like when we need a good punt he shanks it for about 30 yards more he needs to...

Don't you remember the great Tom Fears "Ollie Cordill" Punter/WR or DB experiment?

Re: Morstead

Morstead explained sometime back that he was happy to give up the kickoff duties because the kicking motions for punting and placekicking are radically different and he felt it was hurting his punting.

RUSSELL ERXLEBEN enough said?

Morstead has to be on the cap causality list yet again this year. Probably at the bottom but on it non the less. 3.1 cap savings hanging over his head. lol

Morestead Is one of the best in the NFL every season. He aint going anywhere.

Re: Morstead

He's a good punter, but is he really worth that kinda money?

Our past three seasons would have been much better with a good young FA guard or linebacker...

Remember Steve Weatherford? His NFL career ended..........................

"On September 4, 2015, the Giants released Weatherford due to his large contract" (5 years @ 12.75 MIL)

In the age of specialization, it's these kinds of attitudes by players that make me long back to the days of football past. The Patriots seem to be the closest team today that espouses and expects multiple skill sets from football players. It seemed for a fleeting moment SP was headed there with our Saints.

Exactly. Now if they want to bring in some competition and Morestead gets beat out, fine. But as far as I'm concerned, don't mess with what's working. Focus on the issues with the team. Punting and/or cap space aren't one of them in 2017...Yet anyway.

when it comes to punting especially for an offense like the saints I always look at things like this

Beyond the sheer power that opened so many eyes in the postseason, though, Scott was arguably most impressive for his control. More than half of his punts (31 of 55) pinned opponents inside their own 20-yard line, the best rate in the FBS or the NFL, while only five (!) went for touchbacks. More than a third (19 of 55) were fair caught, and after accounting for return yards,2 Alabama also led the nation in net punting at 44.7 yards per attempt. (Again, that number would have led the pros.) “I haven’t really looked at my furthest distance,” Scott told al.com earlier this month, “because you could hit a 75-yard punt, but if it has no hang time and isn’t in the right place, it doesn’t do much for you because the coverage is going to be off.”
Great Scott! The Best Punter in Football Is Alabama

Then there is your P/K

Austin Rehkow, P, Idaho
Height: 6-3. Weight: 215.
Projected Round (2017): 5-7.

12/24/16: Rehkow averaged 41.6 yards per punt and made a long of 60 yards. He also was kicking field goals for Idaho and was 26-for-29 with a long of 50 yards.

8/20/16: Rehkow has been a model of consistency over three seasons. He averaged 47.8 yards per punt as a freshman and sophomore. Rehkow had long punts of 73 and 65 yards, respectively, so he has a powerful leg as well. As a junior, Rehkow averaged 45.7 yards per punt with a long of 65 yards.

Brings me back to pinning teams inside the 20. I wish punters would use coffin corner kicks. It's a lost art I tell ya
