Same old Saints?

Just a couple of weeks ago all I was hearing was "Same old Saints." Folks were saying Mayberry couldn't play RT. And they were saying FS wasn't that big of a need and that Loomis and Haslett had failed because there was no LB brought in.

Now it seems like folks have completely changed their stance. I even read where WhoDat said he was optimistic. And I've heard some of the more pessimistic folks say they are encouraged also.

But ... WHY?

Nothing has changed since then! Mayberry is still playing RT. We still don't have a LB. Haslett and Venturi are still the coaches. Sheppard is the OC. Loomis is still the GM. Brooks is still the QB.

What happened to give these pessimists hope?

Minus Riley and Jones... add Smith, Mayberry, and a motivated Sullivan... looks improved to me. Watson, Colby, and Allen with another year of experience looks fine to me. Healthy Deuce, simplified offense (ball control), Horn still here, Bentley, Jacox, Gandy, Stallworth, Smith, Grant, McKensie, Brown, Bellamy also looks good to me. Haslett isn\'t that bad... Venturi is but hey, you can\'t win them all.

Team looks encouraging to me... hopefully, nevermind I change that, WE WILL MAKE IT TO THE PLAYOFFS! :bandg:

All this talk about RT and an improved Sullivan got me thinking. Sullivan is not even the biggest bust we have from the University of Georgia. At least he has seen the field and made a couple of plays. Our biggest bust is none other than Stinky Stinchcomb. Is this guy ever going to play RT? Can somebody answer this for me. We drafted this guy in the second round and has not even sniffed the field of play. What kind of country is this where you can get paid to do nothing for your employer? They could have drafted me in the second round. I would have signed for a lot less and they would have gotten the same production.

My optimism is still contingent on a lot of things and was somewhat misinformed.

First, I based it in part on news that the Saints would acquire Dat Ngyuen and a 2nd from Dallas for Howard. It appears that isn\'t the case.

Second, it was based on some move I said that I would like to see in the draft, that I still realistically belive are questionable at best.

But, my stance remains unchanged.

IF the Saints get a Dat Nguyen level LB AND a 2nd in a trade for Howard.... AND

IF the Saints sign a veteran DT or draft one high... AND

IF the Saints sign Smith in the first, Webster in the 2nd, and a LB or DT with their other 2nd

THEN I will call it a very successful offseason. Why does that give me optimism? Well, the last time I think the Saints did really well in FA and the draft was 2000. They made the playoffs that year. Connection? I dunno, but it\'ll give me hope.

aaron brooks will be mvp. he only didn\'t last year cuz of no running game, a bad offensive line, receivers dropping so many balls, bad coaching, wrong schemes for him, the defense not giving him enough opportuniites, the press biased against him, and the fans not supporting him.

You forgot the guy that beat him up on the plane...it\'s his fault too.

so it was the defenses fault brooks would make some of the most bone head plays you\'ll ever see.

Face it there needs to be a change at qb.
quit going off of stats if that was the case peyton manning would be working on his 2nd or 3rd super bowl win.

The guy doesn\'t have good sense. It was jeff blakes team that went to the playoffs not brooks.

Brooks an MVP in your dreams :P

I for one are always optimistic in the offseason. That usually ends up being the best time for Saints fans. However I think its the Saints attitude that has people becoming more optimistic. They are at least attempting to address team needs via free agency instead of their normal head in the sand approach and telling everyone they are satisfied with the players at that position. No they have not gotten a linebacker yet -- but the fact that they are openly trying to get one shows promise. Speaking for myself the road to recovery is admitting there is a problem. This offseason the Saints management finally have admitted there is a problem.

I\'m about the same as last year. We have made some good moves and we\'re building a great roster except for ONE area. Linebacker. I can even live without picking up a run stuffing DT, but with only two real LB\'s on this team it leaves us with a hole that can easily be expoited by any team with a decent OC.
CB-Good
FS-Good
SS-OK
DE-Great if Howard stays, Good if traded

DT-Average, assuming someone steps up between Sullivan, Green, Whitehead, Kenny Smith, Leisle, Bryant (I think he re-signed). Add another DT in the draft, and another year under Pease and I think we\'ll be decent as is.

LB-Horrible. Watson, Bockwoldt, Allen are OK and very promising, but no one else would start on any team in the league and most wouldn\'t make a roster.

DC-OK, especially if its true that Venturi is now just the puppet DC.

On offense,
QB-OK
RB-Great
FB-Good
O-line-OK, Good if Holland and Stinchcomb step up another notch.
WR-Good, especially if Horn re-signs.
TE-Good
OC-OK. I think Sheppard will be an upgrade over Mr. Predictability. And the veteran assistants we brought in should improve our grossly underachieving running game.

Everything looks like a promising 2005 campaign, except for one unit.

But since this team had a pretty solid unit going into 2004 and severely underachieved, I\'m a bit apprehensive about proclaiming them the next Patriots.
