Seems kind of like we hit the lottery this season cap relief wise.

If you include the bonus conversions that Loomis always writes into his contracts and the probable annual extension to Brees' contract the total free cap space can approach the $50 million range.

YES YES YES
will we get that big name big gun free agent de/lb. Is this the year we make huge strides back to the mix of power rankings and playoff admiration's, are we ready, you damn right were ready to get out of this slutty rutt we've been in. We are a couple of players away, i believe to make that push back and say enough is enough.

Saints have 36 million in cap space.

Browns: 108 million.

Pats are up there too at 71 million.

This organization is first class from top to bottom and one win away from going back to yet another SB.

I thought Brees said he's going to go year by year and wasn't going to sign an extension until after he's played out his current contract.

Man they manage things well. It almost seems unfair.

I haven't seen that anywhere about not doing anything until playing out his contract. Payton said he is committed to staying in New Orleans through the end of HIS contract, at least. The only thing Brees has said is, "I'll be here as long as they'll have me."

The hardest part is not so much the space but getting good FA's. Who would want to play for say the Browns. We are not in an awful position but if you want to win we would likely not make the short list for most good FA's.

I wouldn't be so sure. Look at what Atlanta did between last season and this season. They were coming off a season in which the lost eight of their last eleven games. By adding a couple of free agents and getting lucky on a couple of draft picks they ended up going 11-5 and winning the division. The same can easily happen with the Saints. Any FA would love to be part of that emergence.

I agree with you.

Problem with having that much money to spend(Browns) is that there aren't enough good FAs to spend it all on because you still have 31 other teams in the market as well. It also means you currently have little to 0 depth.

So you end up like TB did a few years ago when they had like 80 million to spend, way overpaying for a few good players, "winning" FA, and still being a terrible team.

Drew Brees not planning to push for contract extension this time around - New Orleans Saints Blog- ESPN

“I signed a one-year extension ... so I plan on playing that out and just allowing things to take form and take shape here for next year and putting forth my absolute best effort to help us win a division championship and then a world championship and then again, just one year at a time,” Brees said. “And that’s not a lack of commitment or anything like that. I just want to focus on what’s right in front of me.”

I had missed that entirely. Not much mentioned about it elsewhere. Although, if for some reason cap space is needed, some could be realized from an extension. But, his $24 million hit in 2016 isn't that bad compared to his value.

Agreed. He said that at the conclusion of the season. It's my opinion that he was eluding to the fact that he's tired of losing. I think he may have been indicating that he wasn't going to make a commitment to the Saints until the Saints make a commitment to winning. Soon after he said this stuff, the coaches were fired.

San Fran with over 40 mil!!! Christ what we could do with that. Carolina has a lot too and they get a couple players and will be hard to beat. When is Matt Ryan due for a raise?

We are beginning to reap the benefits of restructuring our scouting and coaching departments the last couple of years. Apparently Ireland is the real deal in finding defensive talent and making that translate to the team on draft day. I like that he has been productive since he came onboard at the Senior bowl.....he was even more productive last year with a full year in our system. I have high hopes that Ireland can spot the talent needed for us to build through the draft defensively.

We just need a couple of good CB's and DE's with some of that cap money
