Source: New Orleans Saints add long snapper Jesse Schmitt
According to a source, the New Orleans Saints are signing long snapper Jesse Schmitt to a 2-year contract. News of a visit was spotted on the NFL’s Transaction Wire for Wednesday, but I’m told a deal was reached with the team not long after Schmitt performed well at the Husted Pro Camp in front of team scouts over the weekend.
Per ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, Schmitt was added to the Packers in mid-August, and was supposed to provide some competition for Rick Lovato. However, he showed up to practice less than 24 hours with a broken hand suffered on the first snap in training camp. Schmitt is originally from Kentucky, and attended Purdue from 2010-2014, although he didn’t play his first season. He went undrafted his first season, and after going unsigned, Schmitt took a job as a volunteer assistant football coach at Western Kentucky for 2015 before he resurfaced with the Packers last August. Currently, the Saints don’t have Justin Drescher in the picture for 2017. Drescher is an unrestricted free agent for 2017. http://www.canalstreetchronicles.com...-jesse-schmitt |

Jesse Schmitt to a 2-year contract?????
Schmitt (6-foot-2, 250 pounds), an undrafted rookie out of Purdue, was the long snapper for the Boilermakers from 2011-14. After serving as the primary long snapper on punts in 2011, he handled all snapping duties during his final three seasons. Schmitt was named Academic All-Big Ten for four consecutive years (2011-14). He will wear No. 77 for the Packers. Green Bay Packers: Jesse Schmitt Jesse Schmitt*|*Purdue,*LS*:*2015 NFL Draft Scout Player Profile Yep you read it right....6-foot-2, 250 pounds Ok we had players leaping and pushing our special team line all season long so I am a bit stumped here. |
Re: Source: New Orleans Saints add long snapper Jesse Schmitt
That is a perfectly normal size for a long snapper. Most of them have played LB, TE or something like that in college.
Some examples Zak DeOssie, New York Giants, 6-foot-4, 249 Pounds Morgan Cox, Baltimore Ravens, 6-foot-4, 233 Pounds Jake McQuaide, Los Angeles Rams, 6-foot-2, 244 Pounds |

Re: Source: New Orleans Saints add long snapper Jesse Schmitt
The reason you don't want them to be much bigger is that they are part of the coverage team too and then you don't want a big ol´guard at 320 lbs. A really good LS can be one of the first guys down field on a punt.
