Drew Brees and the Saints can sit tight for one more year, but then what?

This could have been a far more nerve-racking offseason for the New Orleans Saints.

Drew Brees would have been the NFL headliner for the free agent class of 2017. It wouldn't have mattered that he had just turned 38 a month ago. The guy still plays at an elite level and there's no question teams (cough, Denver, cough) would line up to land Brees.

Another piece by NOLA.com's drama queen, Larry Holder. Also known for buying into the bounty lies hook, line and sinker.

Really. Isn't next season enough to worry about?

Brees isn't going anywhere. We will win the division next year.

Brees leaves, no worries. Sign Luke McCown for 3 more years, draft Josh Rosen, and spend the left over money on defense.

On a serious note, too early to think about this...

I could see if we finish under .500 Payton and Allen being let go, then if Brees didn't like the new HC , then becoming a FA or even retiring.

point 1 - Brees is younger than the last two SB-winning QB's ---it's the new norm
point 2 - we were top 5 (lowest) in sacks allowed, and Brees took every single snap --- we are keeping him upright
point 3 - if we go 7-9 for the 4th straight year I think we'll see a house cleaning, and I'm not sure that will be how Brees wants to end his career

First of all, we aren't finishing under .500 unless we suffer a huge batch of injuries again. Secondly, who is going to let Payton go? I'll guarantee you that Loomis or Benson wouldn't. The dynamics are so different than that of most franchises. Benson, and Gayle, both love Payton and Loomis. Probably more than they do certain members of their own family. Name another coach that can have a team go 7-9, 11-5, 7-9, 7-9 and be given a new contract. Payton will only leave when he is ready.

On point 3, what do you define as a house cleaning? The house has been totally cleaned over the past three seasons. Strief, Brees and Evans are the only remaining players. The defense has seen 100 percent turnover.

Loomis and SP...
and let's face it, after a hypothetical 4th losing year in a row, they should go

Pure speculation we want go 7-9 on your part. I believe you said last year we were going to be 16-0, how did that speculation turn out, 7-9 is how it turned out, no matter what the cause. You can keep saying they will stay but given the fact that with one of the highest payrolls in the league and one of the top qb.'s losing gets old quickly in the N.ot F.or L.ong. So I'm speculating and your speculating and we'll see, but if we finish below.500 again my speculation might get real, quick and it should.

You don't get it though. As long as Tom Benson and his wife are owners of the team neither are going anywhere no matter how badly you wish. Face the facts.

Want to make it so he stays?

OFFENSIVE OFF SEASON

Keep him up right and healthy is the best thing the saints can do for him. Been saying it for years. Stop screwing around with the OL. Add a few weapons and finish building this thing already.

Kevin Zeitler RG
Rick Wagner RT
O.J. Howard TE
A taller #2 WR opposite of Michael Thomas would be nice also

So no defense at all in the draft?

I wouldn't be disappointed if we went entirely defense all offseason and draft.

Zeitler - 100%

Rick Wagner - 90%

OJ Howard - 5%......defense baby

If someone is better than Coleman then fine but I'm not investing a penny at WR

Re-sign Fairley if possible.......unfortunately he's played himself out of our price range I believe. Draft or sign a speed edge rusher and get after the QB. Give me a LB'er too.

Dizzle,

I do believe the Saints will have to address the guard situation this offseason. Evans coming back just before the season was a lucky break.

But I agree that there's no need for any fantasylike discussion of any more offensive skill players. With the production at the QB, WR, and RB and the fact that the Saints are stuck with Fleener for another year at least, there are no needs in the offensive skill positions.

Of course I know from a more than a decade of offseasons here that's wishful thinking.
