Saints should stay away from WR market come free agency time

1 Attachment(s)
Wide receiver is one position group for the New Orleans Saints without much headache this offseason.

The young corps of Brandin Cooks, Michael Thomas, Willie Snead and Brandon Coleman is one of, if not the best ensemble of wide receivers in the NFL. Plus all of them are young and come with an inexpensive price tag ... for now.

This means the Saints won't have to pry open their wallet for any receiver when free agency opens in March. There's no need to pursue Alshon Jeffery, Victor Cruz, Terrelle Pryor, Kenny Stills or anyone else.

The Saints will focus on taking care of their own receivers with Snead and Coleman as exclusive rights free agents. In this scenario, the two players would only become actual free agents if the Saints opted not to bring them back. Also, the contract terms as an exclusive rights free agent are low.

Unless there is someone with Joe Horn upside, yes pass.

or a cheap vet that will give some depth

Maybe take a flyer on a 7th rounder, but def not before. Our track record on developing 'project' receivers isn't great

Somebody more reliable than Brandon Coleman, then I'd say go for it.

Otherwise, address defense entirely.

Nice to hear there is an area of the team that isn't an immediate concern. Michael Thomas is is legit, and Brandin Cooks is actually playing like they drafted him to.

For me TE is solid too.
Yes, M. Hoomanwhatshisnuts is a question mark
yes, Coby Fleener took way too long to pull his head out of his ass
no, Josh Hill was not turned Graham part deaux

but, when your QB is Brees, everybody gets better
cheap vet, late rounder? yes big signing or early pick? no thanks

Then only place I want them to spend money on is the OL.

Get some serious vets on that line. Keep drafting it will pay off.

We could sign some interesting guys for vet min: Andre Holmes (big guy, great hands), Marquise Goodwin (deep threat)...

as long as the bucks are cheap I like the risk.rewards with (not looking like he will be cheap)

Justin Hunter WR Buffalo Bills 25 / 6'4' / 203 / 4.44 / 2013 / Rd. 2 (34) / TEN / $1,144,656,
Some old baggage but has been clean

Draft I have 3 on the watch list

day 1
O.J. Howard TE Alabama 6055 251 4.57 #88 Sr
HGT WGT HAND ARM WING
6055 249 10 33 7/8 80 3/8
Freak under-utilization reliable run blocker,“His upside is through the roof,”

day2
*Isaiah Ford WR Virginia Tech 6012 190 4.49 #1 Jr
Ford a solid size/speed athlete, but creates spacing as a route-runner with outstanding hand-eye coordination to be a reliable target

day 3
Jamari Staples, WR/KR Louisville 6026 195 4.45 #2 rSr
HGT WGT HAND ARM WING
6030 190 9 5/8 32 3/4 78 1/8
Raw big fast, physical and explosive

Depth chart
Micheal Thomas
Justin Hunter and/or Isaiah Ford and/or Jamari Staples
Brandin Cook
Willie Snead
O.J. Howard
Coby Fleener

The only thing I am concerned with......is a Thomas regression. And I don't mean performance. Look all over the NFL. First year standouts mostly have lackluster second seasons then come back in the third. It's mostly a result of injuries. If Thomas gets hurt, do we have enough?

Why even worry about year 3?

As far as lackluster second seasons .. they just don't happen in New Orleans at the WR position. Meachem's sophomore year? His best season in his career with 45 catches for 722 yards and 9 touchdowns. Or circle back to the great Marques Colston 98 catches for 1,202 yards and 11 touchdowns his sophomore year. Devery Henderson's sophomore year was Curtis Johnson's first year... Henderson went from 22 catches, 343 yards, and 3 touchdowns in 2005 to 32 catches for 745 yards and 5 touchdowns in 2006. Jimmy Dickens sophomore year was a measly 99 receptions for 1,310 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Facts :bng:.

I don't have Cooks numbers readily available his 2nd season but you get the idea.

Two words: Curtis Martin!:lightsabre:

We don't need to spend money on another WR.

You're mostly citing second seasons following worser seasons. Meachem was not getting more looks until 2009. He did not do as well in 2010. Lance Moore had a good year in 2008, and was injured most of 2009. Colston also had injuries in his rookie season, but after 2007 he also missed games in 2008.
