Nick Fairley - 4 yrs / 30 million

Wow!

Like I said in the free agency thread... This is a great deal! People thought he might get $10 million/year and we kept him for between $7-8 million. I'm thrilled with it!

There were rumors he'd be over 10/yr.

To have the 3rd best F/A DT at 6 or 7 million is great.

I don't care what other people would have paid for him. I hope it works out, but if he ****s the bed suddenly it is going to be another move in a long line of bad ones. Like I said hope it pans out.

7.5m a year for a top pass rushing DT is a good deal. Nick Fairley has earned a solid contract. This wasn't a bad move at all.

Defensive tackle should have great balance, now we have defensive line coach and the talent

The rotation at dt ...rankin, fairley, Davidson, and onyemata

It's not like bringing in an unknown. He has proven his worth as a Saint. He wants to be here. There is no indication that it could ever turn into a bad deal.

neither did the one we gave to Junior. Are we still paying him to not play for the SKIns? I hope you're right, he was great for us last season

For those of you who always talk about hometown discounts, rejoice! We finally got one! I like the deal, both from a financial standpoint and in terms of length. I don't think we could have asked for much better.

We didn't get to the qb. last season with him, why with signing him does anybody expect that to change, it won't. The run hurt us last year also and he doesn't play that well at all. We better get some bad a$$ cb's, here comes Mississippi 1 thru 10 again. I think we blew this one.

They hardly ever happen, but this one was a hometown deal. I think the fact that his family could drive to the games from Mississippi was a factor. Another factor, I believe, is how he flourished in Dennis Allen's defense. They are a perfect fit.

Top overall grade: LT Taylor Decker, 82.8 (No. 23)

Top pass-blocking grade: RG Larry Warford, 82.6 (No. 33)

Top run-blocking grade: RG Larry Warford, 81.8 (No. 16)

The play of rookie LT Taylor Decker was a pleasant surprise for this team. Decker was a player that didn’t overly impress PFF as a draft prospect out of Ohio State, but he was consistently solid all season, performing above-average as both a run blocker and pass protector in his first pro season. Larry Warford was markedly better than a year ago at RG, at least when it comes to run blocking, and Travis Swanson was solid at center. The biggest issue this team had was at LG, where the combination of Graham Glasgow and Laken Tomlinson simply took turns getting abused. As a pair, they surrendered six sacks, 10 penalties, and 49 total pressures, with neither countering that form with dominant run-blocking displays.

I think it will. The past two years were Nick's first opportunity to shine out right. I thought he flashed in Detroit. You could also argue that last year in NO was his first true shot (Rams are loaded up front). Donald is the future @ the 3 tech, so NF wasn't going to get a whole lot of production there. All I know is we're a better team with him than without.

As far as "will he play great as he did previously" ... I've seen nothing that would cause me to believe he'll pull a Albert Haynesworth on us.

He had 6.5 sacks and a lot of pressures. Our problem was that we were only getting a pass rush out of him and Jordan for most of the year. When Ellerbe and Rankins got healthy we started getting more sacks and pressures. If we can (PLEASE GOD) stay healthy this coming year I think it's gonna be a much different story from last year. Especially if we manage to land a bad ass DE in the draft.

Re: Nick Fairley - 4 yrs / 30 million

How often did you see the initial pressure and pocket collapse but there was always one side that failed to hold the edge and give the QB an escape route.

We need another DE to close that gap and some depth for rotation.
The LB didnt exactly help the run either

Re: Nick Fairley - 4 yrs / 30 million

If you really think about it, we weren't playing with the starters or back up corners last year, we were playing with players literally off the streets. The defensive line was able to apply some pressure

Re: Nick Fairley - 4 yrs / 30 million

The pieces are all coming together brothers and sisters. The keys to this whole thing will be having a good draft and keeping guys out of the tub and on the field. I believe we had enough talent last year to be an average defense. But calamity struck and we lost a seemingly unending number of players to injury. No one knows the future, but I'm hoping and praying that won't happen again this year.

I'm loving what we are doing so far. If we nail it in the draft we are back in the playoffs.

That is a great interior line starting to form, we need to get someone opposite Cam Jordan and some OLB's, maybe some cornerbacks who don't get hurt tying their shoe laces and we'll be looking good.

Re: Nick Fairley - 4 yrs / 30 million

This is the best move we could have made in free agency, in my opinion. Keeping Fairley.

And the money isn't cheap, but I thought it could have been a lot more, and that would have likely meant he was going somewhere else. It doesn't come without risk, but we've had terrible luck (and often scouting) with DT's, for years. I remember saying some time back, after the season ended, that if we didn't re-sign the one guy who worked out over the last 15 plus years, it would be a huge mistake.

We've had some solid rotational guys, like Hargrove and the old version of Kevin Williams that we had for a year. But our starters have been bad up until Fairley. That's a long way of saying this is worth the risk.

Underachiever. Had a decent contract year with the Saints. The staff knows him. He was cheapish in the overall scheme of things. Glad it's not my money. LOL. Hoping for the best. Rankins being healthy is the key to the DL. And hitting on whatever pass rusher the Saints draft.

He underachieved BEFORE coming here. How could you call what he did last year an underachievement? C'mon dude.

He was constantly in the backfield. Does he have to get 20 sacks to get your attention?
