Doubtful as it wouldn't have been in the team's best interest. This is the best timing for two reasons:

1. Cooks was owed a $750K roster bonus Monday.
2. If the Saints were not going to pick up his 5th year option, then he would be a free agent one year from now.

In short, this was the best time for a trade. If a suitable deal was not to be had, the Saints would had kept him at a cheap price this upcoming season then let him go into free agency with nothing in return.

I know I was all starry eyed thinking about getting one of the Titans first rounders and this or that player, but if we were getting rid of him regardless then hey. We came out okay... maybe even better than okay.

Exactly. Many are complaining that the Saints got screwed. The bottom line is that trying to play hardball would leave the team letting Cooks go with nothing in return.
