There are multiple sets, multiple formations, and players have to know the entire route tree.

This is off topic but Blazing Saddles is probably one of the funniest movies I've ever seen in my life. The genius of Mel Brooks and Richard Pryor (writing) was Epic.

Yep - and was Brooks' first choice for Sheriff, but it sure worked out with Cleavon Little in that role.
