NFL Scheduling Formula, since 2002

Each NFL team plays 16 games as follows:

Home and away against its three division opponents (six games).
Four (4) IntraConference, non-division games, rotating three-year cycle - Four (4) games
Four (4) InterConference, non-division, non-conference games, rotating three-year cycle - Four (4) games
Two (2) IntraConference games based on the previous year’s standings - Two (2) games, matching first-place teams vs first-place teamss in the two same-conference divisions that the team is not scheduled to play that season based on earlier stipulated rotation. Second-place, Third-place, and Fourth-place teams in a conference are matches are styled in same way.*

* In 2010 adjustment was added to pairings so AFC West and NFC West Divisions wouldn't be req'd to make two West Coast trips when other teams in their division had none.
