Defense reigns as Advocate writers take over Saints' war room for final mock draft simulation

1 Attachment(s)
By the time the first round of the NFL draft arrives Thursday, hundreds of mock drafts have been released, and the best might get only nine picks right. Rather than trying to predict the whims of 32 teams, Advocate sportswriters Nick Underhill and Joel A. Erickson are back for another mock draft that is more exercise than prediction, playing the role of the Saints’ top two decision-makers instead. A draft simulator handles the other 31 teams; Underhill & Erickson make the Saints picks.

I think a receiver needs to be mixed in there somewhere as after Snead and Thomas, we don't really have anyone. However I want atleast the first 3 picks to be defense and ideally, Day 1 starters.

I will go ballistic.

Marshon Lattimore is the most talented CB but has chronic hamstring issues dating back to his high school days. Stupid move.

Harris? He is Non-existent in run defense. He has good traits as a pass rusher but he is not an every down player in the NFL.

Cunningham? Solid player if you over look spaghetti arms and all his missed tackles.

Curtis Samuel dual threat might mouse. but a mighty mouse non the less. Bounces everything to outside. but an understandable pick by this group given the first 3 picks. I want a player that does not flinch in the middle of the field. but he is acceptable for a new dance partner. I can understand the pick

Saints miss the boat.

Hagan,

I'll go ballistic if the Saints FO selects O.J. @ #11 :argue:.

This class of CB's doesn't seem quite as phenomenal as originally thought.

Marshon Lattimore can't even workout without hurting a hamstring.
Sidney Jones tore his Achilles.
Teez Tabor runs the 40 in 9 seconds.
Gareon Conley is being accused of rape.

We should probably just wait until #32 and take whoever is available between Kevin King, Tre'davious White and Quincy Wilson.

Agree with ya Chris. Barnett at 11 and moreau at 32 are our best picks.

Coleman has shown promise and Ginn may just have the coaching and scheming to make him a factor.

I actually like this mock draft. Marshon Lattimore would be a gift he fell to us at pick 11. He's a 6'0" corner who excels at man coverage and ran a 4.36. I never even considered he'd be there even with the hamstring issues. It's similar to Jamal Adams. I don't think they'll be available to us, so I haven't accounted for them. What I would love most about this draft is adding both Lattimore and Sidney Jones. I don't think you'd have to worry about that position for 10 years. Before the injury, I wanted Sidney Jones at 11...even over Reuben Foster. That kid is special. With the addition of Adrian Peterson to go along with Mark Ingram, I like the Curtis Samuel selection a well. No need to elaborate there. We know the role he'd be able to fill. I don't mind Zach Cunningham as a 2nd rounder if he were to fall to us. He has a high motor and he flies to the ball. He needs to get a little stronger and sure up that tackling a tad, but he's always around the ball. That's something I don't see from our defense. Athletes flying to the ball. I'm not big on Harris, but maybe there will be a better prospect there at 32 we could take like T.J. Watt or Takkarist McKinley. Based on the draft scenario of the article Derek Barnett is there. If that's the case then I'd go:

Pick 11: Marshon Lattimore, CB, Ohio State
Pick 32: Derek Barnett, DE, Tennessee
Pick 42: Zach Cunningham, LB, Vanderbilt
Pick 76: Curtis Samuel, RB/WR, Ohio State
Pick 103: Sidney Jones, CB, Washington

The 32nd pick would be the only thing I'd change up if that's how the board was shaping up. The Sidney Jones selection would be such a steal. I'm telling you. Not to mention, we just addressed every level of the defense with the first 3 picks. I'd be smiling from ear to ear after seeing these five players added to the Saints roster. Everybody is doubting us. We'll shock the world.

Been banging the drum for Jones too. If we trade back get him late 2 even if we have picks or anywhere R3. He has said his surgeon says he is back this year.

If we could get Foster/DE/Lattimore with 11. Then TE/DE/CB/S at 32 and 42 and Jones R3 the defense could go from a weakness to a strength

My worry is Humphreys
Looks great on paper but that man got terrorised with long throws. Giving up a avg catch of 19 yards on College then playing Julio Jones,Mike Evans,Kelvin Benjamin and DeSean Jackson a combined 6 times a year doesnot sound good to me. If Lattimore falls cool take him if not go for someone at 32/42

My worry with Conley Rape allegations is that it may well cause others to rise and we could just miss out at 32

I agree with you Rez on Jones. He is basically Peters without the drama. A would of been top 15 pick in the 3rd is a mega steal. Would jump on that all day everyday

And so far Marcus Peters hasn't had any drama whatsoever and he's looking like he'll take the reigns as the best corner in the league soon. We whiffed on that one by taking Andrus Peat instead. I'm looking at that draft right now.

Devante Parker, WR, Miami Dolphins
Melvin Gordon, RB, Los Angeles Chargers
Marcus Peters, CB, Kansas City Chiefs
Shane Ray, EDGE, Denver Broncos
Shaq Thompson, OLB, Carolina Panthers
Byron Jones, DB, Dallas Cowboys
Landon Collins, FS, New York Giants
Jalen Collins, CB, Atlanta Falcons
Eric Kendricks, LB, Minnesota Vikings

We took Andrus Peat, Stephone Anthony, and Hau'oli Kikiha with our first three picks and passed on all these guys. We can't keep doing this. Last year was a step in the right direction.

Last year was the first year with new scouts that had replaced those fired by Payton/Loomis and the first year with Jeff Ireland very involved in the selection process. 2016 is the only year that we can truly base future draft success upon. Comparing to 2015 and earlier is like comparing apples and orangutans.

True. So far, so good for Ireland.
