lets hope so we still have that god awful contract to deal with and next years draft has little to offer as a way out. Big reason I wanted OJ Howard as an escape clause.

We all hope, Hagan. If he doesn't, maybe free agency or the running back crew will pick up his slack.

What I feared would be the case was the whole playbook thing.

Hagan, got you something to look forward to...TE Troy Fumigalli, Wisconsin; Height: 6' 5"; Weight: 249 lbs.

And check this story out...

Fleener is no Jimmy imagine that...meh. Small bucket of catching TE's out there and he ain't one of them. Less that 10 of them that impact the receiving aspect. Rest are filler.

He is good but a third round talent that will get over drafted due to the lack of talent.

He is on my watch list

Big buck FA? God only knows what Cinnci will do lol
Tyler Eifert, TE Cincinnati Bengals

Potential "big bang for the buck FA" high on my list is a traditional TE
C.J. Fiedorowicz, TE Houston Texans

He hasn't even put on the pads yet. Let's see what you do in action. You can talk all you want.

He's probably worn pads since he was 8. He probably has an idea.

If you look at the stats, last year he ended up pretty much the same as 3 previous years.
He's not a bad player; we simply overpaid.

The 'learn the playbook' excuse is tired and overused. He signed a contract 5 months before the reg season opener. WTF was he doing all last summer?

Experiencing the new CBA. Times have changed.

In terms of pay, Fleener ranked at 10. Based on production, he was about equal to that. He is by no means Jimmy Dickens (Graham), but a lot of us (not you) are measuring Fleener against him. Jimmy is a freak of nature at this position.

I do agree, he isn't a bad player but he needs to step up in 2017.

Edit: here is the pay rank for TE contracts. https://overthecap.com/position/tight-end/

Re: ESPN: Coby Fleener more comfortable, hopes for better in Year 2 with Saints

Well this may seem naive and arrogant, but I'd think a TE like Fleener would have paid to play with Brees and that Loomis and Payton grossly overpaid for him...

It's natural to compare TEs, and comparison to Graham are inevitable considering all factors; however, my big criticism, aside from his mullet which I poke for fun, is his inability to convert the clutch catches...

The Saints' offense inconsistency to convert 3rd downs when needed despite its overall offensive numbers, is why this team failed last year because, let's face it, we knew the defense was not gonna hold up its end...

WillSaints81 05-28-2017 11:46 PM

Re: ESPN: Coby Fleener more comfortable, hopes for better in Year 2 with Saints

^Exactly

I said it before, we lost games because of him. And it bothers me that all will be okay if he does better next year. It's no excuse to waste Brees' chances at the playoffs because of anyone on the offense.

But at the end of the day, it's a team game... Hell if we had a halfway decent defense, we wouldn't have to rely on the offense and half as much...

Just look at the 2009 season(if you were even following the Saints); Sharper and the rest of the defense were putting up so many defensive points 40+ burgers were pretty much the norm...

Rank 10th but on guarantees 2nd to no one.

If he caught the passes against Oakland, we take some time off that clock because the next play after his failed catch we scored a TD. He would have certainly been the difference maker against the giants with how he was targeted as well as TB week 14. He did not show up in the good defensive games we had. I can't believe I am having to do this again.

Re: ESPN: Coby Fleener more comfortable, hopes for better in Year 2 with Saints

Good player. Not great. The Saints paid too much for him. Brees has made less talented receivers look good. Don't know why it didn't click last year. Surely year two has to be better.

Re: ESPN: Coby Fleener more comfortable, hopes for better in Year 2 with Saints

Just go up and catch the seam routes. Tiny, ass Lance Moore and Brandin Cooks did that better than Fleener while here.

Re: ESPN: Coby Fleener more comfortable, hopes for better in Year 2 with Saints

Simple, Fleener has got to reduce the drops, especially those on third down...

Re: ESPN: Coby Fleener more comfortable, hopes for better in Year 2 with Saints

I have never seen someone with so little energy on a football field at any level. I don't have faith in him at all after watching him run lazy routes at training camp. My God he's a waste of space. We over paid again. I don't like to criticize people or players but this guy gets no lee way from me at all. I hope he improves but I'm not going to hold my breath. :brood:

jeanpierre 05-29-2017 05:07 PM

Re: ESPN: Coby Fleener more comfortable, hopes for better in Year 2 with Saints

Fleener last year was a case study in failing to bring in an effective replacement when trading away an asset...

And then overpaying for what little the market had to offer in the way of the TE position that year...

Seer1 05-29-2017 05:25 PM

Re: ESPN: Coby Fleener more comfortable, hopes for better in Year 2 with Saints

Although I'm not sure we could call Jimmy an asset at that point. I think we got better than we gave on that one. But still, it was a desperation move even though it did force Drew to look beyond the TE position.

Eh... Most of us wanted Ladarius Green last year. So if you look at it that way it turned out alright.

Precisely.

Per Spotrac numbers, Ladarius was paid 6 million by the Steelers and they got 18 receptions for 304 yards and 1 TD for their coin. Fleener was paid $7.4 million so far by the Saints and they got 50 receptions for 631 yards and 3 TD's.

It could have been a lot worse for us.
