The Saints generate $7.8 million with Post June 1 Designations

When the Cowboys released Tony Romo, they did so with the post-June 1 designation. That resulted in his $19.6 million cap hit being split into a $10.7 million charge in 2017 and an $8.9 million charge in 2018. But since his $14 million salary (and $24.7 million cap charge) remained on the books through June 1, the Cowboys will get as of Friday $14 million in cap space.

Via Field Yates of ESPN.com, other teams will pick up some cap space, too, but none will get nearly as much as the Cowboys. The Saints generate $7.8 million, the Jets get $6 million, the Lions realize $4.8 million, the Falcons pick up $4.25 million, and the Chargers acquire $2.5 million.

Considering we haven't signed a single drafted rookie yet ... most of that will be spent right away.

Still wanting a Brees deal before the season but I know it won't happen. I really don't want the 18 mil in dead cap if he goes elsewhere next year.

1) Why would you think he would go elsewhere next year?

2) He has already stated he wanted to go year to year now even though he plans to play the rest of his career in N.O. and play into his mid-forties.

3) He has the same agent as Peyton Manning and Manning also went year to year for several years down the stretch.

4) There would not be an $18 million cap hit if by some miracle he was to leave on his own. The contract voids after 2017. Its conditions for guarantee only apply to release or trade. It also contains a no trade clause so that cannot happen.

If we have another losing season a guarantee 100% he will go elsewhere.

Not that I think we will have a losing season, but what makes you believe that? In fact, God forbid, if we do have another losing season this coming year I will bet you real cash money that he wouldn't up and go to another team following the season.

You guarantee 100%, right? Well?

Basically Drew called out the FO and said he wants to win. Defense has been our Achilles under Payton and Drew knows it. It's not his job to play anywhere on the defensive side of the ball but he would if it would help him win. He will go with a year to year contract to ensure he's not tied to a losing team and has the opportunity to go elsewhere like Payton did.

Pretty sure Drew will be year to year, at slightly above his market value.

Great deal for us, decent deal for him.

I'll have to find it again but I read recently where because of him signing an extension with the last year a "void" year it would put 18 mil against our cap.

I have pointed this out before. Drew has the same agent as does Peyton Manning. Manning spent his last several years on a year to year contract to be able to decide his future and not handcuff the franchise. The difference is that he suffered the injury so the decision wasn't his. Brees will be in New Orleans until whenever he chooses to retire. Let us all pray it is no sooner than 2023.

No such thing as a 100% guarantee in the NFL
