Backed into a corner...

Here's the thing - No, I didn't like the signing overall, because Fairley has shown his impact is limited with a rep count (and now it seems the reasons why it is thus are more serious since he was extended 90+ days ago); commtting that much money for limited reps, no, I really don't like that ratio of money spent to plays on the field...

However, understood what his impact on the pass rush; second, there were limited options on the free agent market; third, we could not afford to regress with regards to our pass rush...

Loomis and Payton had ignored, neglected the defensive position far too long and the team fell into a bad situation with limited choices and had to make a very expensive quick fix for what has been a historically bad defense...

Clicking on the link led me to some other articles. The one on Onyamata is very informative. I think that Onyamata is a future star while Davison is going to be solid in stopping the run which is what he's good at. They both have me feeling better about the interior push from the D-line if Fairley misses any time.

It's extremely hard to find these guys in the draft and they cost high coin in Free Agency. Probably why 8 of the 12 highest paid defenders are players who can provide an interior rush.

He's a very solid, workman-like player. He is a good rotational guy. He's just not who you want starting.

He already is/was starting.

He and Onymata rotated at one position while Rankins and Nick rotated at the other. However, if Nick can't play, we do need to sign a vet in my opinion. There is one or two guys still available that could add to our rotation. Nick was a very valuable player as he gave a push in the middle we haven't had in many years.

It's a little bit complex. Fairley and Rankins both spent plenty of time lined up at the 1 and 3-techniques. In 3 man fronts Fairley played NT while Rankins was out at 5-technique. So there was a lot of scheme versatility that having Fairley and Rankins allowed us.

Davison has pretty strictly been used as a NT. I think Onyemata would be the more likely candidate to play a larger role due to his versatility. You could even line him up at strongside DE and kick Jordan inside next to Rankins if that gives a more favorable matchup.

If Fairley doesn't return then we finally have a little depth and should still be competitive at DT in the middle. Of course with Fairley we are deeper than ever before with a heck of a rotation. Fingers crossed for Fairley.....and the Saints.
